1. What is the name of the main character in this book?

Answer: Polly Perks

Polly poses as a man and enlists in the army to try to find her brother Paul.

2. What does Polly tell the recruiting sergeant her name is?

Answer: Oliver

The sergeant is called Sergeant Jackrum. He is a big fat "man" (he later turns out to be a woman) who likes shouting a lot and is a real professional soldier.

3. True or false. Maladict is the vampire's real name?

Answer: False

Once again this is a character who turns out to be female. Maladict's real name is Maladicta.

4. Samuel Vimes features in this book. He is a Duke of which city?

Answer: Ankh-Morpork

Vimes made a meteoric rise from sergeant in the City Watch to noble status. However, he often gives the impressiion that he wishes it all had not happened.

5. What is the name of the Werewolf that tracks the regiment?

Answer: Angua

Angua is a member of the Ankh-Morpork city watch and has featured in other Discworld novels, including "Feet of Clay" and "The Fifth Elephant".

6. Who speaks with the Duchess?

Answer: Wazzer

Wozzer has the power to speak to the Duchess. However the rest of the regiment think that she is mad.

In theory Blouse is a good soldier. After all, he has read all the books about warfare. However, he has never actually been to war before. Jackrum spends a lot of time trying to manipulate the lieutenant into doing what he wants him to do.

8. What is the name of the "photographer" from Ankh-Morpork?

Answer: Otto Chriek

I put the term "photographer" in brackets because the device he uses is not exactly a camera. Chriek is a vampire which is a bit of a disadvantage as he turns to dust every time he uses the flash.

9. What was General Froc's real name?

Answer: Mildred

This is revealed in one of my favourite parts of the book. Jackrum exposes the fact that most of the high ranking officers in the Borogravian army are in fact women, including its most famous general.

10. Corporal Strappi keeps calling Polly Private...?

Answer: Parts

Corporal Strappi is probably the most dislikable character in the whole book. He is a coward and is both sexist and speciesist. (There is a lot of Speciesism about on the Disc. You have to remember it is sometimes difficult for humans, dwarves, werewolves, vampires, trolls, gnomes and zombies to get along with each other.)
