This is said by the narrator at the beginning of the movie. He is explaining who the Skeksis and Mystics are and how they came to be and why things are the way they are. It also sets the tone for the rest of the movie.

Jen and Kira just decided they'd go together to the Skeksis castle to heal the crystal. The castle is still far away, so Kira calls her friends, the Landstriders, which are kind of like rabbits with really long legs that enable them to run quickly, to carry them. It was the quarreling Skeksis that struck the crystal and caused the shard to break off. (They re-edited the film and changed "ur-Ru" to "Mystics" in the final cut.)

Jen is the main character in this movie. He has been chosen to save his world from the evil Skeksis. He has never been outside of his valley, and doesn't really want to leave, but because his master says he has to, he is going to do it.

It is not explained as to how his family was killed or why Jen survived.

But on the General's second try, he knocks off a huge chunk of stone. The frightened Chamberlain is then stripped and banished from the Skeksis, while the General is made Emperor.
