Inglourious Basterds Trivia Questions

1. When SS Colonel Hans Landa was interrogating the farmer Perrier LaPadite, what did he, Colonel Landa, have to drink?

From Quiz
"Inglourious Basterds" - Is That Spelt Right?

Answer: Milk

Colonel Landa was looking for the Dreyfus family, who were Jewish, and which he knew LaPadite was sheltering under his floor boards. Although he was offered wine, Landa opted for milk as LaPadite ran a dairy farm. He enjoyed the first glass so much he requested a second. After an opening conversation in French, the pair switched to English so that they could not be understood by the fugitives beneath their feet. They switched back to French after Landa had got LaPadite to admit he was sheltering them, and Landa then called in his troopers who shot the family through the floorboards. Only one of them got away, a girl called Shoshanna, whom Landa had the chance to shoot as she ran across a meadow, but he allowed her to escape, even bidding her goodbye!

2. What was the name of the Jewish family hiding under the farmhouse?

From Quiz Inglourious Basterds

Answer: Dreyfus

Of the five family members only one daughter, Shosanna, escaped the slaughter and was next seen four years later as the owner of a cinema where the propaganda film would later be premiered. The three other names are those of actors in the cast.

3. Christoph Walz stole the film with his portrayal of Colonel Landa, and won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, but he was not Tarantino's first choice for the part. Who was?

From Quiz "Inglourious Basterds" - Is That Spelt Right?

Answer: Leonardo DiCaprio

Tarantino was originally set on DiCaprio for the role of Landa, but changed his mind when he realised an older actor would fit better. Austrian actor Christoph Walz was almost unknown before making this film, having concentrated mainly on domestic TV work. His role in "Inglourious Basterds" also won him Best Leading Actor at Cannes, and Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. But perhaps the most surprising fact is that he is the first actor to win an Oscar for an appearance in a Tarantino film.

4. What was the nickname of Brad Pitt's character, Lt Aldo Raine?

From Quiz "Inglourious Basterds" - Is That Spelt Right?

Answer: Aldo the Apache

Aldo got this nickname because of his use of the Apache scalping technique. He is made all the more scary in the film by a huge scar around his neck which makes it appear that he has been lynched. Other nicknames featured in the film are "The Bear Jew" (Sgt Donny Donowitz), "The Little Man" (Pfc Smithson Utivich) and "The Jewhunter" (Colonel Landa). Donowitz and Utivich are members of Raine's eight-man unit, all of them Jews, whom he has recruited to spread terror amongst Nazi troopers, charging each of them to get him 100 Nazi scalps. Aldo Raine's name is Tarantino's homage to actor Aldo Ray.

5. Sargent Donny Donowitz, played by Eli Roth, was known for savagely beating Nazi soldiers to death with a baseball bat. His brutality earned him the nickname "the _________ Jew"; what was Donny's nickname?

From Quiz Inglourious Basterds

Answer: Bear

The first appearance of Sgt. Donowitz was quite frightening, as his introduction was almost excruciatingly long. A Nazi officer that refused to disclose information was kneeling in the dirt and had to listen to Sgt. Donowitz walk out from a deep tunnel while he tapped a baseball bat against the metal frame with every step he took.

6. Which was Lt. Raine's home town?

From Quiz Inglourious Basterds

Answer: Maynardville, Tennessee

It was mentioned in conversation with Colonel Landa. Brad Pitt, who acted as Lt. Raine, played the part with a very heavy southern accent which, on occasion, lost some of its twang.

7. What did Sgt Donny Donowitz, "The Bear Jew", use to kill Sergeant Rachtman?

From Quiz "Inglourious Basterds" - Is That Spelt Right?

Answer: Baseball bat

The Bear Jew was notorious for his execution technique using a baseball bat. Tarantino built the tension in this scene with the sound of Donowitz's bat being struck against the brick wall of a tunnel as he walked along it towards Rachtman, without at first being visible. Every so often the Basterds left one survivor alive to tell the horrible tale and strike fear into other Nazi soldiers (after Aldo has carved a swastika into the survivor's forehead). The survivor from this incident was taken to tell the tale to Hitler, who warned him he must keep it quiet, but then saw the swastika scar on his forehead and realised that might be difficult!

8. What was the name of Dr. Goebbels' propaganda film?

From Quiz Inglourious Basterds

Answer: Nation's Pride

The German title was "Stolz der Nation" which was printed on the board over the cinema's entrance. The English title was shown at the beginning of the actual film.

9. When Shoshanna Dreyfus (in her new identity of Emmanuelle Mimieux) was first introduced to Francesca Mondino, Goebbels' "interpreter", what image immediately flashed into Shoshanna's mind?

From Quiz "Inglourious Basterds" - Is That Spelt Right?

Answer: Francesca and Goebbels having sex

Shoshanna was plainly scornful of Francesca Mondino for her collaboration with the Nazis, but she was terrified, as a Jew, to be sitting at a restaurant table with Goebbels. He had been convinced by the lauded sniper, Friedrich Zoller, to meet her with a view to the premiere of "Nation's Pride" being shown in her cinema. But it got worse when Colonel Landa, the man who had had her family shot, joined the table and insisted on her joining him for strudel and a glass of milk (which is what he drank just before murdering her family).

10. Which Australian born actor played the cameo part of Winston Churchill?

From Quiz Inglourious Basterds

Answer: Rod Taylor

The 80 year old veteran actor has appeared in more than 90 films since his first film in 1953 and is probably best remembered for his role in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds". Both Russell Crowe and Sam Neil were born in New Zealand.

11. Which veteran actor played a cameo role as Winston Churchill?

From Quiz "Inglourious Basterds" - Is That Spelt Right?

Answer: Rod Taylor

Rod Taylor, an Australian-born actor probably best known for his starring role in Hitchcock's "The Birds", was 79 years old when Tarantino invited him to play Churchill. Although his part was only minor, Taylor spent a great deal of time studying film footage of Churchill so that he could ape his posture and mannerisms, even down to a lisp.

12. Shosanna's plan to burn down the theater on 'Nazi night' involved burning hundreds of highly flammable film reels made of what material?

From Quiz Inglourious Basterds

Answer: nitrate

Like most Tarantino films, Shosanna's plan was described by the narrator, who disclosed that 35mm nitrate film was "so flammable that you couldn't even bring a reel on a streetcar." Nitrate film burned three times faster than paper and Shosanna happened to have a collection of over 350 nitrate films.

13. In the meeting at the Nadine tavern, a game was played in which each individual was required to guess the name of a famous person or character written on a card by another player. What was the name written on the Gestapo chief's card?

From Quiz Inglourious Basterds

Answer: King Kong

The other names were written on cards of other players. The Gestapo Chief was played by August Diehl. Seemingly, his acting impressed Brad Pitt to the extent that he recommended Diehl for the role of Angelina Jolie's husband in "Salt".

14. After the shoot-out in the basement tavern in Nadine, the only German soldier left alive was Master Sergeant Wilhelm. Who eventually killed him?

From Quiz "Inglourious Basterds" - Is That Spelt Right?

Answer: Bridget von Hammersmark

After the multiple shootings and stabbings in the tavern, with bodies lying all over the floor, Wilhelm, who had just become a father that day, believed he was the only one left alive. He struck a deal with Aldo Raine to let him live, but Bridget, lying wounded on the floor, shot him with Hugo Stiglitz's Walther PPK.

15. What was the name of the German sniper, who was the star of the propaganda film and on whose recommendation the premier was switched to the cinema owned by Shosanna?

From Quiz Inglourious Basterds

Answer: Private Frederick Zoller

Pvt Zoller claimed, in a later conversation with Shosanna, that he had killed over 600 of the enemy when serving in Italy. This exploit was the subject of the film. Pvt Butz was a captured soldier forced to disclose the location of German troops. He was released and sent back across the German lines where he was interrogated by Hitler. Sgt. Rachtman was a captured soldier, beaten to death for refusing to disclose the information afterwards given up by Pvt. Butz. Mstr Sergeant Wilhelm was a drunk soldier at the Nadine Tavern celebrating the birth of his first son.

16. At the premiere of "Nation's Pride", how did Bridget von Hammersmark explain to Colonel Landa the fact that her leg was in a plaster cast?

From Quiz "Inglourious Basterds" - Is That Spelt Right?

Answer: Mountain climbing accident

Aldo convinced Bridget to continue the attempted sabotage by taking him, Donny and Omar to the premiere posing as Italian film makers (with truly atrocious Italian accents which should surely have blown the whistle on them). Bridget claimed she had been injured whilst mountaineering, which Landa found a hilarious idea. Having previously found Bridget's shoe and a napkin she had autographed for Wilhelm at the scene of the shootings at the Nadine tavern, Landa knew that she was lying. He played her along for a while before taking her to the cinema office, where he strangled her.

17. Who said "the objective of this operation, blow up the basket"?

From Quiz Inglourious Basterds

Answer: General Ed Fenech

This was said on learning that the military and political German leaders, including Hitler, would be attending the film. "We have all our rotten eggs in one basket". The part of Generel Fenech was played by Mike Meyers. General Frank was an aide to Adolf Hitler.

18. Shoshanna and Marcel, her projectionist and lover, planned to burn the cinema down with all the Nazi leaders inside it. What did they plan to use as fuel to fan the flames?

From Quiz "Inglourious Basterds" - Is That Spelt Right?

Answer: Reels of old film

Marcel set fire to scores of reels of old cellulose nitrate film, which is extremely flammable - it catches fire very easily, and burns extremely quickly with a very hot and intense flame. As it happened, as well as the intense fire, the Nazi leaders and VIPS were also subjected to withering fire from the MP40 submachine guns of Donny Donowitz and Omar Ulmer, and ultimately to blasts from the explosives the two Basterds carried.

19. While Archie and Bridget were able to convince the German officer of the origins of Archie's strange accent, Archie ended up making a fatal error that exposed himself to be a Nazi impostor. What did he do to wrong?

From Quiz Inglourious Basterds

Answer: made the wrong hand gesture for the number '3'

Archie raised his ring, index, and middle finger when he ordered '3 drinks.' Evidently, in Germany, the number three is gestured by using the thumb, index, and middle finger. Bridget explained this to Aldo after her rescue and she said that Archie's way of gesturing was considered strange in Germany, and thus would definitely stand out.

20. Who spliced an alternative ending and this dialogue "and this is the face of Jewish vengeance!" into the last reel of "Nation's Pride"?

From Quiz Inglourious Basterds

Answer: An unnamed French film developer

While it was Shosanna Dreyfus's face and words, the actual doctoring of the film was done by the film developer, under threat from Shosanna and Marcel. Marcel was Shosanna's projectionist who locked all the theatre doors during the fourth reel and ignited the fire which turned the building into a blazing inferno.

21. As the cinema burned the soundtrack featured David Bowie singing "Putting Out Fire". For which 1982 film had this been the theme song?

From Quiz "Inglourious Basterds" - Is That Spelt Right?

Answer: Cat People

David Bowie wrote the words to "Cat People (Putting Out Fires)" and Giorgio Moroder wrote the music. Sharleen Spiteri made a new version of the song in 2010. Tarantino had wanted Ennio Morricone to write the soundtrack for "Inglourious Basterds", but eventually settled for the inclusion of excerpts from eight Morricone compositions. The soundtrack of the film featured another theme tune from a famous film - it opened with "The Green Leaves of Summer" which featured in the 1960 version of "The Alamo".
