"Inglourious Basterds" - Is That Spelt Right? Quiz

With this 2009 film many Quentin Tarantino fans, me included, believe he returned to the quality of "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction". The quiz covers action in the film as well as a couple of background questions about its production and casting.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When SS Colonel Hans Landa was interrogating the farmer Perrier LaPadite, what did he, Colonel Landa, have to drink?

Answer: Milk

Colonel Landa was looking for the Dreyfus family, who were Jewish, and which he knew LaPadite was sheltering under his floor boards. Although he was offered wine, Landa opted for milk as LaPadite ran a dairy farm. He enjoyed the first glass so much he requested a second.

After an opening conversation in French, the pair switched to English so that they could not be understood by the fugitives beneath their feet. They switched back to French after Landa had got LaPadite to admit he was sheltering them, and Landa then called in his troopers who shot the family through the floorboards. Only one of them got away, a girl called Shoshanna, whom Landa had the chance to shoot as she ran across a meadow, but he allowed her to escape, even bidding her goodbye!
2. Christoph Walz stole the film with his portrayal of Colonel Landa, and won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, but he was not Tarantino's first choice for the part. Who was?

Answer: Leonardo DiCaprio

Tarantino was originally set on DiCaprio for the role of Landa, but changed his mind when he realised an older actor would fit better. Austrian actor Christoph Walz was almost unknown before making this film, having concentrated mainly on domestic TV work.

His role in "Inglourious Basterds" also won him Best Leading Actor at Cannes, and Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. But perhaps the most surprising fact is that he is the first actor to win an Oscar for an appearance in a Tarantino film.
3. What was the nickname of Brad Pitt's character, Lt Aldo Raine?

Answer: Aldo the Apache

Aldo got this nickname because of his use of the Apache scalping technique. He is made all the more scary in the film by a huge scar around his neck which makes it appear that he has been lynched. Other nicknames featured in the film are "The Bear Jew" (Sgt Donny Donowitz), "The Little Man" (Pfc Smithson Utivich) and "The Jewhunter" (Colonel Landa). Donowitz and Utivich are members of Raine's eight-man unit, all of them Jews, whom he has recruited to spread terror amongst Nazi troopers, charging each of them to get him 100 Nazi scalps. Aldo Raine's name is Tarantino's homage to actor Aldo Ray.
4. What did Sgt Donny Donowitz, "The Bear Jew", use to kill Sergeant Rachtman?

Answer: Baseball bat

The Bear Jew was notorious for his execution technique using a baseball bat. Tarantino built the tension in this scene with the sound of Donowitz's bat being struck against the brick wall of a tunnel as he walked along it towards Rachtman, without at first being visible. Every so often the Basterds left one survivor alive to tell the horrible tale and strike fear into other Nazi soldiers (after Aldo has carved a swastika into the survivor's forehead).

The survivor from this incident was taken to tell the tale to Hitler, who warned him he must keep it quiet, but then saw the swastika scar on his forehead and realised that might be difficult!
5. When Shoshanna Dreyfus (in her new identity of Emmanuelle Mimieux) was first introduced to Francesca Mondino, Goebbels' "interpreter", what image immediately flashed into Shoshanna's mind?

Answer: Francesca and Goebbels having sex

Shoshanna was plainly scornful of Francesca Mondino for her collaboration with the Nazis, but she was terrified, as a Jew, to be sitting at a restaurant table with Goebbels. He had been convinced by the lauded sniper, Friedrich Zoller, to meet her with a view to the premiere of "Nation's Pride" being shown in her cinema.

But it got worse when Colonel Landa, the man who had had her family shot, joined the table and insisted on her joining him for strudel and a glass of milk (which is what he drank just before murdering her family).
6. Which veteran actor played a cameo role as Winston Churchill?

Answer: Rod Taylor

Rod Taylor, an Australian-born actor probably best known for his starring role in Hitchcock's "The Birds", was 79 years old when Tarantino invited him to play Churchill. Although his part was only minor, Taylor spent a great deal of time studying film footage of Churchill so that he could ape his posture and mannerisms, even down to a lisp.
7. After the shoot-out in the basement tavern in Nadine, the only German soldier left alive was Master Sergeant Wilhelm. Who eventually killed him?

Answer: Bridget von Hammersmark

After the multiple shootings and stabbings in the tavern, with bodies lying all over the floor, Wilhelm, who had just become a father that day, believed he was the only one left alive. He struck a deal with Aldo Raine to let him live, but Bridget, lying wounded on the floor, shot him with Hugo Stiglitz's Walther PPK.
8. At the premiere of "Nation's Pride", how did Bridget von Hammersmark explain to Colonel Landa the fact that her leg was in a plaster cast?

Answer: Mountain climbing accident

Aldo convinced Bridget to continue the attempted sabotage by taking him, Donny and Omar to the premiere posing as Italian film makers (with truly atrocious Italian accents which should surely have blown the whistle on them). Bridget claimed she had been injured whilst mountaineering, which Landa found a hilarious idea. Having previously found Bridget's shoe and a napkin she had autographed for Wilhelm at the scene of the shootings at the Nadine tavern, Landa knew that she was lying.

He played her along for a while before taking her to the cinema office, where he strangled her.
9. Shoshanna and Marcel, her projectionist and lover, planned to burn the cinema down with all the Nazi leaders inside it. What did they plan to use as fuel to fan the flames?

Answer: Reels of old film

Marcel set fire to scores of reels of old cellulose nitrate film, which is extremely flammable - it catches fire very easily, and burns extremely quickly with a very hot and intense flame. As it happened, as well as the intense fire, the Nazi leaders and VIPS were also subjected to withering fire from the MP40 submachine guns of Donny Donowitz and Omar Ulmer, and ultimately to blasts from the explosives the two Basterds carried.
10. As the cinema burned the soundtrack featured David Bowie singing "Putting Out Fire". For which 1982 film had this been the theme song?

Answer: Cat People

David Bowie wrote the words to "Cat People (Putting Out Fires)" and Giorgio Moroder wrote the music. Sharleen Spiteri made a new version of the song in 2010. Tarantino had wanted Ennio Morricone to write the soundtrack for "Inglourious Basterds", but eventually settled for the inclusion of excerpts from eight Morricone compositions.

The soundtrack of the film featured another theme tune from a famous film - it opened with "The Green Leaves of Summer" which featured in the 1960 version of "The Alamo".
