Cryptic Music Trivia Questions

1. To steal from the undead?

From Quiz
Karl Pilkington Style "Rock Busters!"

Answer: Rob Zombie

Quite a simple one to start. "Rob" as in to steal is followed by "Zombie" as in the living dead. The answer "Metallica" was the correct answer to one of Karl's clues: "I'm sucking on some iron." (Metal licker)

2. The set of risers and newels to paradise take some climbing to reach what sounds like a heavy mineral airship. What song is this?

From Quiz Cryptic Song Titles

Answer: Stairway to Heaven

A riser and a newel are part of a stair, therefore risers and newels are many stairs (stairway). Paradise can also be called heaven. Heavy mineral refers to lead (Led), whilst the airship refers to the Zeppelin. "Sound/s like" generally refers to possible different spelling of a word that sounds the same. "Stairway to Heaven" is one of the few songs that I have heard played not only at funerals, but also at weddings. Obviously the master of ceremonies had never sat down and listened to the lyrics. Also, this is one of the most "covered" songs that I know of. It has even been performed by Rolf Harris. "Tie me kangaroo down sport"! Personally, my opinion is that Led Zeppelin's version will always be the best.

3. GSEG say The Quarrymen reworked.

From Quiz Cryptic Songs

Answer: Yesterday

Unscramble "GSEG" to get "EGGS" When Paul McCartney was writing "Yesterday" he had a tune but no lyrics. The words "Scrambled Eggs" fitted the riff so this became the working title. "Yesterday" is one of the most widely covered songs of all time. The Quarrymen was the name of an earlier incarnation of Lennon/McCartney.

4. The old fashioned witch is offended by the girl's short dress, so by stirring up a spell she will jinx her midi! (4,7)

From Quiz Cryptic Crossword Clues of Classic Rock 2

Answer: Jimi Hendrix

The indicator word in this clue is "stirring," indicating an anagram question. In this case, "jinx her midi" is an anagram of "Jimi Hendrix." Jimi Hendrix bought his first guitar for only 5 dollars at age 15. Frequently regarded as the greatest guitarist of all time, Jimi Hendrix's hits include the Bob Dylan cover "All Along the Watchtower," "Purple Haze," and "Hey Joe."

5. Do others get confused at cryptics as well? (3,5)

From Quiz Cryptic Crossword Clues of Classic Rock

Answer: The Doors

For this question, the indicator word is "confused," indicating an anagram. "Do others" is an anagram of "The Doors." Fronted by lead singer Jim Morrison, The Doors were a highly popular band in the late 60s and early 70s until Morrison's tragic death in 1971. Their hit songs include "Break on Through" and "Light My Fire."

6. A 21st century lady's man.

From Quiz Cryptic 70s and 80s Bands

Answer: Player

Probably recognized by their only number one hit from 1978 "Baby Come Back", Player was formed in 1977. The original members were Peter Beckett, J.C. Crowley and Ronn Moss. They were signed to the RSO label shortly after adding John Friesen to their lineup. "Baby Come Back" from the band's not-so-originally titled album "Player" was at the top of the charts for the weeks of January 14, 21 and 28, 1978.

7. Less than a dozen phalanges.

From Quiz "Louder Than Bombs" Cryptic Band Names Quiz

Answer: Finger Eleven

When they formed in Burlington, Ontario in 1994, Finger Eleven were known as Rainbow Butt Monkeys. They recorded the 1995 album "Letters From Chutney" under that name, but became Finger Eleven just before the release of their 1997 breakthrough album "Tip". The name Finger Eleven was inspired by their song "Thin Spirits"- Singer Scott Anderson said the message behind the lyrics (when everything is pushing you in one direction, but you want to go another way) is what he calls "Finger Eleven".

8. Kinfolk living in sailor's beacon?

From Quiz Cryptic Music Acts 2

Answer: Lighthouse Family & The Lighthouse Family

The Lighthouse Family were founded in Newcastle by two guys who met at University - Tunde Baiyewu and Paul Tucker.

9. McCartney's northern refuge, which he made a song about.

From Quiz Cryptic Titles, Bands, Musicians and Events

Answer: Mull of Kintyre

Paul McCartney was probably the most successful member of the ex-Beatles after the break-up.

10. Shattering orange Hallowe'en fruits?

From Quiz Cryptic Music 2

Answer: Smashing Pumpkins & The Smashing Pumpkins

Another word for shattering is SMASHING. The large orange fruits popular at Hallowe'en are PUMPKINS. This gives us American band The SMASHING PUMPKINS, who were fronted by lead singer Billy Corgan, until the band was terminated in 2000.

11. Environmentally friendly 24 hours?

From Quiz Cryptic Music

Answer: Green Day

Something that is environmentally friendly is often referred to as being GREEN. 24 hours is a DAY. This gives us the answer GREEN DAY. Green Day are an American punk rock band, and are famous for singles such as 'Basket Case' and the controversial 'American Idiot'.

12. It's a fact! Less evil prey, are completely disorganised for this popular artist.

From Quiz Musical Cryptic Clues

Answer: Elvis Presley

The words "LESS EVIL PREY" when "disorganised", are an anagram of Elvis Presley. Known simply as "The King", his influence is still strong even after his death in 1977.

13. Cool harp playing, had a drink with the conquistador? ( 6,5 )

From Quiz Cryptic Rock-Part 5

14. The matador's reverse proclamation?

Matador ( bullfighter )shouts Ole! reverse = ELO ( electric Light Orchestra ) Jeff Lynne and the boys are one of the most under-rated bands ever.

15. Sounds like those insects can work it out? ( 3,7 )

From Quiz Cryptic Rock - Part 3

Answer: The Beatles

Sounds like insects ( beetles ) = Beatles. 'We Can Work It Out'= classic beatles song. Not much you can say about The Beatles that hasn't already been said Along with Elvis and maybe Dylan the Beatles transcended the normal parameters of showbiz and became a cultural phenomenon, that will ( I believe ) endure as long as people enjoy music .

16. Rebellious kind of ewe meets on the day for kicking back? ( 5,7 )

From Quiz Cryptic Rock - Part 2

Answer: Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath - U.K. rockers from hell. Actually they're quite a mild mannered bunch really, well - excepting Ozzy Osbourne, who seems to be more famous for his off- and onstage antics than his music these days.

17. Pb I hear jumped on the dirigible? ( 3,8 )

From Quiz Cryptic Rock

Answer: Led Zeppelin

Pb = the chemical symbol for Lead, from the Latin Plumbum, so sounds like Lead ( Led ) to Dirigible - a kind of air balloon. Led Zeppelin is probably the most influential rock band of all time. From the U.K. Zeppelin became instant stars in America, selling some 100 million albums there alone.

18. Teach Toys: change the hot drinks to busy insects.

From Quiz Karl Pilkington Style "Rock Busters!"

Answer: Beach Boys

Tea or "T" is the hot drink in question. Once you have removed the "T's" from the first two words, replace them with busy insect. This hive insect is "Bee" or "B" to make the sixties surf rock group the Beach Boys.

19. Reverberations to "meddle" with the pinky Dolf had to be reset. Name the tune.

From Quiz Cryptic Song Titles

Answer: Echoes

To reverberate is to echo, and the "meddle" was thrown in as a clue for Pink Floyd fans. The other clue was around the words "pinky Dolf" followed by had to reset. To reset is to rearrange, and if you rearrange these letters you can come up with the artists. Any generation can listen to this band. Lie back, relax, have a deep breath, and enjoy "The air that we breathe". My absolute favourite LP was "Meddle".

20. The King's in love; he's LAL.

From Quiz Cryptic Songs

Answer: All Shook Up

Unshake "LAL" to get "ALL". They tell me this was big for some guy called Elvis. Personally I preferred the Jeff Beck Group's version with Rod Stewart on vocals (before he sold out). Interestingly the quiz checking engine warns me that this answer contains something like "All of these" and this is discouraged. I guess it saw the first word of "All Shook Up" and jumped to a erroneous conclusion. The logic needs to be made a bit less fuzzy for once.

21. Darkness fell on the seventh day? (5,7)

From Quiz Cryptic Crossword Clues of Classic Rock 2

Answer: Black Sabbath

A question mark can indicate a double meaning. Here, "darkness" is "black," and "the seventh day" is the "Sabbath." Black Sabbath, founded in 1968, was led by singer turned reality star Ozzy Osbourne. Ozzy later left the band to have a solo career. Their hits include "Paranoid," "Iron Man," and "Crazy Train."

22. Initiate Al Capone's deadly crime (4)

From Quiz Cryptic Crossword Clues of Classic Rock

Answer: AC/DC&ACDC&AC DC&AC / DC

Here the indicator word is "initiate," telling the player that the answer lies in the initials to words in the clue. "Al Capone's deadly crime" can be initialized A.C.D.C., revealing the answer of the band AC/DC. Initially led by singer Bon Scott and guitarist Angus Young, AC/DC were rock and roll pioneers with hits such as "TNT" and "Highway to Hell". After Bon Scott died in 1980, the band had continued success with singer Brian Johnson with hits "Back in Black" and "Thunderstruck."

25. What time and when will Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band play live?

From Quiz Cryptic Titles, Bands, Musicians and Events

Answer: Nine Tonight

Nearly all the big ones on this album. Brilliant double album, worth every penny. Went to see him when he was in Germany. Very disappointed he didn't do "Night Moves". However, an otherwise great performance made up for that.

26. An old fashioned English police officer with a tan?

From Quiz Cryptic Music 2

Answer: Bobby Brown

Histroically, Englih police officers were often referred to as BOBBYs by many. If the police officer had got a tan, then it's likely he'd be BROWN. This leads us to R&B singer BOBBY BROWN, famously married to singer Whitney Houston.
