He first came to power in 1848 during the Second Republic when he was elected President of France with an impressive 74% of the vote. He was actually the first popularly elected President in the history of France. However, the French Constitution did not allow the President to serve for a second term, so in 1851 he staged a coup d'état and proclaimed himself emperor. After his abdication, he went into exile and died in 1873.
