1. This man served as the last emperor of France and was forced to abdicate after France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. Who was he?

Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte (Napoleon III) was the nephew of Napoleon I (1804-1814, 1815). He first came to power in 1848 during the Second Republic when he was elected President of France with an impressive 74% of the vote. He was actually the first popularly elected President in the history of France. However, the French Constitution did not allow the President to serve for a second term, so in 1851 he staged a coup d'état and proclaimed himself emperor. After his abdication, he went into exile and died in 1873.

Although his family had lived in Beijing since overthrowing the Ming Dynasty in 1644, they were ethnic Manchus rather than Han Chinese. When the Japanese set up a puppet government in occupied Manchuria they offered the throne to Pu Yi which he readily accepted, ruling as the Emperor Kangde. After the Second World War Pu Yi was captured by the Soviets and handed over to the Chinese Communist forces. He was sent to a rehabilitation camp and later became a supporter of the Communist Party, dying in 1967.

Nicholas I tried to expel the Turks in 1910. In 1914 he declared war against Austria and was soon overrun by Austrian and German troops. In 1918 Nicholas was deposed and Montenegro was united with Serbia.

Dom Pedro II (1831-1889) was still a child when he became Emperor of Brazil. He led the movement towards the abolition of slavery in Brazil in 1888. He lived the last two years of his life in exile in France in relative poverty until his death in 1891.

He was personally popular with many of the people of Portugal but not looked on favorably by republican groups in the nation. He moved to Britain where he died in exile in 1932.

Her song "Aloha 'Oe" is about two lovers bidding each other farewell.

Anne's personal life was sad as she underwent 17 pregnancies but only one child survived beyond the age of two--William, Duke of Gloucester, who died at 11. She was succeeded by a distant cousin, George, Elector of Hanover.

After the war King Joao VI returned to Portugal leaving his son, Dom Pedro (full name: Pedro de Alcantara Francisco Antonio Joao Carlos Xavier de Paula Miguel Rafael Joaquin Jose Gonzaga Pascual Cipriano Serafim), in Brazil. In 1822 Brazil declared its independence with Pedro as Emperor. In 1826 he became Pedro IV of Portugal but abdicated in favour of his daughter, Maria II, later the same year. In 1831 he abdicated as emperor of Brazil in favour of his son, Pedro II.
