Ice Hockey, by birth and upbringing a Canadian sport, is an offshoot of field hockey. Some historians suggest that the first game was played in Montreal in December 1879. Others believe that earlier games took place in Kingston, Ontario or Halifax, Nova Scotia. The first governing body of the sport was the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada, formed in 1887. Operating in northern Michigan from 1904 to 1906, the International Hockey League was the first professional league.
Founded in 1908, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), is a federation of member national hockey associations governing the sport of ice hockey and in-line hockey for both men and women
