| The club was founded as the Boston Red Stockings in 1871. They were one of the nine charter members of the National Association of Baseball Players, which lasted for five seasons and joined the National League in its inaugural year as the Boston Red Caps in 1876. The franchise has gone through many name changes, and have had some Hall of Fame greats on their rosters which include Hugh Duffy, Rogers Hornsby, George Sisler, Eddie Mathews, and Hank Aaron. The franchise was blessed over the years with the arms of Tommy Bond, Kid Nichols, Warren Spahn, Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, and others.
