The cost to construct the stadium in 1927 was $950,000, quite a steal considering the billions the University of Michigan has made in the stadium over the ensuing decades. When it opened the stadium was solely host of Wolverine football games and had a capacity of more than 72,000 people. Then head football coach Fielding Yost knew the fandom was growing and convinced the architects to put in footers in the original design that would make expansion of the stadium easier.
