Mario Kart DS Trivia Questions

1. What weight class is Bowser in?

From Quiz
"Mario Kart DS": The Characters and Karts

Answer: Heavy

Obviously, Bowser is in the heavyweight category. His three karts are the Standard-BW, the Tyrant and the Hurricane. The Tyrant is his heaviest, with the best items, having full weight when used by Bowser or R.O.B. The Hurricane is his lighter kart, although it is still rather heavy. It has low items but good stats compared to the Tyrant. Bowser has the joint-highest speed (with R.O.B.), but the lowest acceleration and handling. His drift is quite good, the Hurricane being able to drift round the spiral at the end of Airship Fortress in one go (not that it helps). There are three tracks dedicated to Bowser: Bowser Castle, Bowser Castle 2 (from "Mario Kart: Super Circuit") and Airship Fortress.

2. In the Nitro Cup is the Mushroom Cup. This is the first track that you race. This is also the track in which the first three racers drive on during the award ceremony. What track am I describing?

From Quiz Karts Combine!

Answer: Figure 8 Track

The Figure 8 Track, as its name suggests, is shaped like a figure eight. There are no real hazards in this course unlike some of the other courses which makes this a great course for beginners. Yoshi Falls is a fairly simple course also. The only hazard is on the lower ring of the course if you get washed off by the waterfalls. Cheep Cheep Beach, as its name implies, takes place on a beach with well Cheep Cheeps. The crabs from Koopa Beach from "Mario Kart 64" make a reappearance also. Luigi's Mansion was originally a battle course in "Mario Kart: Double Dash," but was changed into a trek through a forest, a haunted mansion, and a swamp in "Mario Kart DS."

3. What is Luigi's first kart called?

From Quiz "Mario Kart DS": The Characters and Karts

Answer: Poltergust 4000

Based off the Poltergust 3000 that E. Gadd gives to Luigi in "Luigi's Mansion", the Poltergust 4000 has low items, meaning that it has the better stats of Luigi's three karts. Luigi's other karts are the Standard-LG and the Streamliner, a blue car with white stripes. Luigi has a good speed with a high acceleration and handling. His drift is horrible, but that keeps him in better control. If you've ever tried Moo Moo Farm with one of Daisy's karts, you'll know what I mean. Luigi happens to be a medium character. Luigi's three tracks are Luigi's Mansion and the two Luigi Circuits (one from "Mario Kart: Double Dash" and the other from "Mario Kart: Super Circuit").

4. To whom does the Cucumber belong?

From Quiz "Mario Kart DS": The Characters and Karts

Answer: Yoshi

Yoshi's Cucumber looks exactly as it sounds, albeit the wheels. It is Yoshi's heavier kart. Yoshi's other two karts are the Standard-YS and the Egg1. Yoshi has an exceptional grip, with one of the highest acceleration and handling stats in the game. His drift and speed are rather low, but you can't have everything, can you? The Egg1 has the lowest weight in the game, even lighter than the Dry Bomber, belonging to Dry Bones. Yoshi has two tracks dedicated to him: The Yoshi Falls and the Yoshi Circuit (from "Mario Kart: Double Dash").

5. In the Star Cup, in the Nitro Cup, the last track you race is in Airship Fortress. How many different types of hazards are there on Airship Fortress?

From Quiz Karts Combine!

Answer: three

The Bullet Bills at the beginning of the course is the first hazard that you come across. Then you race across the deck of the ship where moles hop out of covers. The last hazards you come across are the two fire pillars that move back and forth after the boxed area. The other three tracks from the Star Cup are DK Pass, Tick-Tock Clock, and Mario Circuit. You can unlock the Star Cup by beating both the Mushroom Cup and the Flower Cup.

6. In the Special Cup there is one track that has been in every "Mario Kart" game up to "Mario Kart DS." Even though the look has changed, the theme remains the same. What is the name of this track?

From Quiz Karts Combine!

Answer: Rainbow Road

Rainbow Road in "Super Mario Kart," was a multicolored road, as its name implies, lined with Thwomps, some jumps, and absolutely no rails. In "Mario Kart 64" Rainbow Road changed a little bit by having stars as rails which kept you from falling off the track unless you jumped over the rails near the beginning for a major shortcut if you time it right, or if you got blasted over by a shell or something. Also on this Rainbow Road, there were hazardous Chain Chomps hiding in the road. After that Rainbow Road, mainly became a very long track some parts guarded by rails, and some parts unguarded. In the Gamecube and DS version there are zipper sections. The Gamecube version sends you through a vortex zipper that shoots you upward. The DS version has several loops that is all zipper. Rainbow Road has always took place in space. The other tracks in the Special Cup are Wario Stadium, Peach Gardens, and Bowser Castle. The Special Cup can be unlocked after you place first in the Mushroom, Flower, and Star Cups.

7. After beating the Nitro Cup on the 50cc level, what special prize do you get?

From Quiz Karts Combine!

Answer: Dry Bones as a playable character

You do get all of these prizes for fulfilling certain requirements. Dry Bones the skeleton Koopa from "Super Mario Bros. 3" and other Mario games is a lightweight character whose initial car is shaped like a skeleton called The Banisher. You unlock Daisy from beating the Retro Cup on 50cc. Every player gets one more kart to choose from if you complete the Nitro Cup on 100cc.

8. What is the colour of Donkey Kong's standard kart?

From Quiz "Mario Kart DS": The Characters and Karts

Answer: Yellow

As with all "Mario Kart" games featuring Donkey Kong, his standard kart is yellow. As one of the heavy characters, his other two karts are the Rambi Rider and Wildlife. His Rambi Rider is huge, with a rhino's head, whilst the Wildlife is a tiny, green safari car with a flag. Like Bowser, DK's speed and drift are high, with bad acceleration and handling. He has DK Pass dedicated to him.

9. What is Mario's heavier kart called?

From Quiz "Mario Kart DS": The Characters and Karts

Answer: B Dasher

Every heavier kart has full items, so obviously the B Dasher's highest stat is items. The acceleration is the next highest, with a close third from drift. Almost all of Mario's stats are all-round on his Standard-MR, B Dasher and Shooting Star. His three dedicated tracks are: Figure-8 Circuit, Mario Circuit and Mario Circuit 1, which was taken from "Super Mario Kart".

10. In the Shell Cup you race a very familiar track to "Mario Kart" veterans. This track mostly composes of curves and straight ways. There are also a couple of hazardous pipes in the way. What track am I describing?

From Quiz Karts Combine!

Answer: Mario Circuit 1

Mario Circuit 1, allows some easy time saving tools if you have some mushrooms or a star. You can just drive off-road and you'll save some time. If you are fast enough on this track, in Time Trial, you will be able to complete the track in under a minute. This was also the first track in the Mushroom Cup in "Super Mario Kart" for the Super Nintendo. Moo Moo Farm appeared as the second track in the Mushroom Cup for "Mario Kart 64" for the Nintendo 64" and has Monty Moles as hazards. Peach Circuit appeared as the first track in the Mushroom Cup for "Mario Kart: Super Circuit" for the Game Boy Advance. And finally, Luigi Circuit appeared as the first track for the Mushroom Cup in "Mario Kart: Double Dash" for the Gamecube.

11. What is Toad's standard kart?

From Quiz "Mario Kart DS": The Characters and Karts

Answer: Standard-TD

Every standard kart only uses consonants as their two letter suffix. These are the two letters that make up most of the name, such as DK for Donkey Kong or PC for Peach. Toad's acceleration is very good, and his handling and drift are also good enough. His karts are the Standard-TD, Mushmellow and 4-Wheel Cradle. His dedicated tracks are Shroom Ridge and the Mushroom Bridge from "Mario Kart: Double Dash".

12. In the Banana Cup, which track is closely related to the first track of the Star Cup in "Mario Kart DS" in ways of hazards?

From Quiz Karts Combine!

Answer: Frappe Snowland

Practically, Frappe Snowland is the only track that actually has hazards. Bowser Castle 2 has a few misleading jumps, however Frappe Snowland has hazardous snowmen just like the snowmen in DK Pass which is the first track of the Star Cup. Donut Plains 1 appeared as the second track in the Mushroom Cup in "Super Mario Kart." Frappe Snowland appeared as the second track in the Flower Cup for "Mario Kart 64." Bowser Castle 2" appeared as the last track in the Flower Cup for "Mario Kart: Super Circuit." And Baby Park appeared as the third track in the Mushroom Cup in "Mario Kart: Double Dash."

13. In "Battle Mode", there are two different modes. In both, the aim is to accumulate as many objects as possible, or to deprive other players of them. Which objects are these?

From Quiz Mario Kart DS

Answer: Balloons and Shine Sprites

The first game is "Balloon Battle" - each player starts with one balloon and four deflated balloons they can inflate at any point in the battle. The aim is to pop other people's balloons using items such as shells or bananas, or to steal balloons by running into another player while using a mushroom/boost. The other game is "Shine Runners": in this game, shine sprites appear in various places along the course and the aim is to collect as many as possible. Items can be used to get other people to lose shines, and at various time intervals, the player (or players) with the fewest sprites are eliminated until only one player remains.

14. The Lightning Cup ranges from courses set in the sky to driving through a big pool of chocolate syrup. What course in the Lightning Cup, features humongous Cheep Cheeps, a wicked S-curve, along with a decimated stone building filled with bats?

From Quiz Karts Combine!

Answer: Banshee Boardwalk

Banshee Boardwalk appeared as the third course in the Special Cup in "Mario Kart 64." Before entering into the bat infested building, you come upon a wicked S-curve which is a perfect place to lay bananas sending people spinning into the dark murky water. In "Mario Kart 64", lightweight characters such as Peach, Yoshi and Toad could spin out occasionally by hitting the bats that run into you but that's not a problem now. The other courses that appear in the Lightning Cup are Choco Island 2 from "Super Mario Kart," Sky Garden from "Mario Kart: Super Circuit," and a Yoshi shaped racetrack hence the name, Yoshi Circuit which appeared in "Mario Kart: Double Dash."

15. How is it possible to unlock Daisy (without cheating, etc.)?

From Quiz "Mario Kart DS": The Characters and Karts

Answer: Complete 50cc Retro Grand Prix (Lightning Cup)

In my opinion, Daisy is a terrible character to try and unlock. Although Nintendo may have meant her to be a better version of Peach, Peach has a better acceleration and can actually handle without bumping into every obstacle in the area. Bar Bowser, Daisy's Power Flower has the worst handling in the game, as well as the second-highest drift, making her uncontrollable. Her other karts are the Standard-DS and Light Dancer.

16. Again after beating the Retro Cup on the 50cc level you get another playable character. Who is it this time?

From Quiz Karts Combine!

Answer: Daisy

Koopa Troopa appeared as a racer in "Super Mario Kart," for the Super Nintendo but was replaced by Wario in "Mario Kart 64." He later appeared in "Mario Kart: Double Dash" with his team mate Paratroopa and he also appeared in "Super Mario Tennis." Daisy made her first appearance in "Super Mario Land," for the Game Boy and later returned on the N64 in "Mario Party 3," and she has become a staple for many other Mario games such as "Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour," "Mario Power Tennis" and the "Mario Party" series.

17. R.O.B. has the Standard-RB and ROB-BLS; what is its other kart?

From Quiz "Mario Kart DS": The Characters and Karts

Answer: ROB-LGS

The ROB-LGS is a seldom seen bike from real life, and is the heavier of R.O.B.'s karts. The ROB-BLS is a copy of a kit for a game, "Stack-Up", which was one of the games intended for R.O.B., the game console. R.O.B. is arguably the best character in the game, having top speed, good acceleration, good handling and a heavy weight. It has the lowest drift, which keeps it in control, although hinders it in several places, such as Airship Fortress and Waluigi Pinball.

18. Two new items were added to "Mario Kart DS" and a very annoying one is the Blooper item. What does the Blooper item do that makes it so annoying?

From Quiz Karts Combine!

Answer: sprays ink all over the screen

Even though water puddles appear on Luigi Circuit and oil slicks appeared in Super Mario Circuit 2 and in "Diddy Kong Racing," the Blooper item does not do that. The Blooper sprays nasty ink all over your screen so that it makes it difficult to see where you are going.

19. What is Peach's lightest, yellow kart called?

From Quiz "Mario Kart DS": The Characters and Karts

Answer: Light Tripper

The Light Tripper, Standard-PC and Royale make up Peach's set of karts. Like the other light characters, she has a low speed with a good acceleration. However, her handling is quite bad, and her drift is top-class. She is a little difficult to control (certainly compared to, say, Yoshi or Dry Bones) but has enough handling to pull her away from collisions. Dedicated to her are Peach Circuit and Peach Gardens.

20. Waluigi appears in his first solo "Mario Kart" game. Waluigi is a character you can unlock and comes with a go-kart that is shaped like a wrecking crane. What is the name of this go-kart?

From Quiz Karts Combine!

Answer: Gold Mantis

Even though Waluigi does fall in the middle class, he tends to run a bit on the heavy side. Waluigi made his first appearance in "Mario Tennis" for the N64. After that he has made several other appearances in games usually paired with Wario. Waluigi has even appeared as a trophy in "Super Smash Bros. Melee." As his name implies, Waluigi is the evil form of Luigi, but it has never been confirmed that Waluigi and Luigi are brothers even though it seems plausible. You can unlock Waluigi by beating the Retro Cup on the 100cc class.

21. What is Dry Bones' default emblem?

From Quiz "Mario Kart DS": The Characters and Karts

Answer: A head

Definitely my favourite character, Dry Bones has the lowest speed, the lowest weight and a bad drift. Not good? Well, Dry Bones also has the highest acceleration AND handling in the game, with the Dry Bomber being full on both, and the Standard-DB and Banisher not far off. In fact, he is a rival to R.O.B. for the most useful character in the game. He also has the highest power-slide turbo boost in the game, with a close second from Yoshi. What's more, a low drift with a high acceleration and handling is perfect for "snaking". This is when one can start drifting on a stretch of straight track, set off sparks, and then repeat in the other direction (left to right, right to left) while the turbo boost is still happening. It's less complicated than it sounds. Dry Bones is the perfect character for this, and if done well enough, he can complete Figure-8 Circuit on the Time Trials in around 84 seconds, 28 per lap, whereas the Staff Expert Data takes 95 seconds. Also, Banshee Boardwalk (which is dedicated to Dry Bones, by the way) can be completed in less than 2 minutes, although I've yet to manage that (I was 39 milliseconds off once). That would be 15 seconds ahead of the Staff Experts. EDIT: Woohoo! Banshee Boardwalk in 1:59:279! (Sorry for sounding like a nerd ¬¬)

22. After unlocking seven karts for each character, which four extra karts are available to Peach?

From Quiz "Mario Kart DS": The Characters and Karts

Answer: 4-Wheel Cradle, Power Flower, Wildlife and Dry Bomber

Four extra karts from other characters are available after beating 100cc Nitro Grand Prix. Peach receives the 4-Wheel Cradle, an all-round but slow kart, the Power Flower, an average kart with an impossible handling, the Wildlife, a fast but small kart, and the Dry Bomber, which is completely overpowered in ability, despite being slow. The ROB-LGS, Light Dancer, Rambi Rider and Brute are the extra karts if Bowser and the Egg1, Streamliner, Hurricane and B Dasher are given to R.O.B. (I might be wrong here; mail me if I am). No-one has the last set, especially as the Death Cheese doesn't exist.

23. Out of all the courses, excluding Battle courses, of "Mario Kart DS," who has the most named after them?

From Quiz Karts Combine!

Answer: Luigi

Luigi the younger and more timid brother of Mario has three courses named after him, and they are Luigi's Mansion, and both Luigi Circuits in the Gamecube version and the Game Boy Advance version. Peach, Bowser, Yoshi and Mario all tie for second place as they have two courses named after them. Mario has Mario Circuit, and Mario Circuit 1. Peach has Peach Gardens and Peach Circuit. Yoshi has Yoshi Falls and Yoshi Circuit. And Bowser has Bowser Castle and Bowser Castle 2. All the other characters except for Toad, Dry Bones, Daisy, Shy Guy, and another hidden character I'll leave you to find out have one course named after them. Shy Guy only appears in download DS play matches.
