Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the Nitro Cup is the Mushroom Cup. This is the first track that you race. This is also the track in which the first three racers drive on during the award ceremony. What track am I describing?

Answer: Figure 8 Track

The Figure 8 Track, as its name suggests, is shaped like a figure eight. There are no real hazards in this course unlike some of the other courses which makes this a great course for beginners. Yoshi Falls is a fairly simple course also. The only hazard is on the lower ring of the course if you get washed off by the waterfalls. Cheep Cheep Beach, as its name implies, takes place on a beach with well Cheep Cheeps.

The crabs from Koopa Beach from "Mario Kart 64" make a reappearance also. Luigi's Mansion was originally a battle course in "Mario Kart: Double Dash," but was changed into a trek through a forest, a haunted mansion, and a swamp in "Mario Kart DS."
2. Is the Flower Cup, in the Nitro Cup, different from all the other cups because you receive a plaque instead of a trophy?

Answer: Yes

The Flower Cup consists of tracks that are a little more difficult than the Mushroom Cup. The first track you race is Desert Hills, which is closely related to the track, Dry Dry Desert, which is the last track in the Mushroom Cup in "Mario Kart: Double Dash," for the Gamecube. Delfino Square is the second track you race.

This track was based off the city streets of Delfino Isle in "Super Mario Sunshine," also for the Gamecube. The third track you race is Waluigi Pinball in which you are in a track fashioned like a pinball machine. You must dodge giant pinballs, flippers, and bumpers.

The last track is Shroom Ridge in which you again race with traffic on busy streets.
3. In the Star Cup, in the Nitro Cup, the last track you race is in Airship Fortress. How many different types of hazards are there on Airship Fortress?

Answer: three

The Bullet Bills at the beginning of the course is the first hazard that you come across. Then you race across the deck of the ship where moles hop out of covers. The last hazards you come across are the two fire pillars that move back and forth after the boxed area. The other three tracks from the Star Cup are DK Pass,
Tick-Tock Clock, and Mario Circuit. You can unlock the Star Cup by beating both the Mushroom Cup and the Flower Cup.
4. In the Special Cup there is one track that has been in every "Mario Kart" game up to "Mario Kart DS." Even though the look has changed, the theme remains the same. What is the name of this track?

Answer: Rainbow Road

Rainbow Road in "Super Mario Kart," was a multicolored road, as its name implies, lined with Thwomps, some jumps, and absolutely no rails. In "Mario Kart 64" Rainbow Road changed a little bit by having stars as rails which kept you from falling off the track unless you jumped over the rails near the beginning for a major shortcut if you time it right, or if you got blasted over by a shell or something. Also on this Rainbow Road, there were hazardous Chain Chomps hiding in the road.

After that Rainbow Road, mainly became a very long track some parts guarded by rails, and some parts unguarded.

In the Gamecube and DS version there are zipper sections. The Gamecube version sends you through a vortex zipper that shoots you upward. The DS version has several loops that is all zipper. Rainbow Road has always took place in space.

The other tracks in the Special Cup are Wario Stadium, Peach Gardens, and Bowser Castle. The Special Cup can be unlocked after you place first in the Mushroom, Flower, and Star Cups.
5. After beating the Nitro Cup on the 50cc level, what special prize do you get?

Answer: Dry Bones as a playable character

You do get all of these prizes for fulfilling certain requirements. Dry Bones the skeleton Koopa from "Super Mario Bros. 3" and other Mario games is a lightweight character whose initial car is shaped like a skeleton called The Banisher. You unlock Daisy from beating the Retro Cup on 50cc. Every player gets one more kart to choose from if you complete the Nitro Cup on 100cc.
6. One feature of "Mario Kart DS" that is interesting, is the fact that it has four additional cups. Each cup features a different track from each of the earlier "Mario Kart" games. What order do these cups go in from left to right on the select cup screen?

Answer: Shell, Banana, Leaf, Lightning

The races in the Retro Cup go in increasing difficulty. All of the tracks are named after an item in the "Mario Kart" series except for the leaf. The leaf allowed Mario to have an outfit with raccoon ears and a raccoon tail in "Super Mario Bros. 3" and it also allowed him to fly for a short time.
7. In the Shell Cup you race a very familiar track to "Mario Kart" veterans. This track mostly composes of curves and straight ways. There are also a couple of hazardous pipes in the way. What track am I describing?

Answer: Mario Circuit 1

Mario Circuit 1, allows some easy time saving tools if you have some mushrooms or a star. You can just drive off-road and you'll save some time. If you are fast enough on this track, in Time Trial, you will be able to complete the track in under a minute.

This was also the first track in the Mushroom Cup in "Super Mario Kart" for the Super Nintendo. Moo Moo Farm appeared as the second track in the Mushroom Cup for "Mario Kart 64" for the Nintendo 64" and has Monty Moles as hazards. Peach Circuit appeared as the first track in the Mushroom Cup for "Mario Kart: Super Circuit" for the Game Boy Advance. And finally, Luigi Circuit appeared as the first track for the Mushroom Cup in "Mario Kart: Double Dash" for the Gamecube.
8. In the Banana Cup, which track is closely related to the first track of the Star Cup in "Mario Kart DS" in ways of hazards?

Answer: Frappe Snowland

Practically, Frappe Snowland is the only track that actually has hazards. Bowser Castle 2 has a few misleading jumps, however Frappe Snowland has hazardous snowmen just like the snowmen in DK Pass which is the first track of the Star Cup. Donut Plains 1 appeared as the second track in the Mushroom Cup in "Super Mario Kart." Frappe Snowland appeared as the second track in the Flower Cup for "Mario Kart 64." Bowser Castle 2" appeared as the last track in the Flower Cup for "Mario Kart: Super Circuit." And Baby Park appeared as the third track in the Mushroom Cup in "Mario Kart: Double Dash."
9. The Leaf Cup contains courses of greater difficulty that were in all the other "Mario Kart" games. However, all of these courses, except for one, did not appear in the third cup of their game. Which track in the Leaf Cup, appeared in the third cup in the game they starred in?

Answer: Luigi Circuit

Luigi Circuit has appeared in "Mario Kart: Super Circuit" and "Mario Kart: Double Dash." However, the Luigi Circuit in the Leaf Cup appeared in the third cup of "Mario Kart: Super Circuit," which was the Lightning Cup, instead of the normal Star Cup which was the fourth cup in "Mario Kart: Super Circuit." Koopa Beach 2 appeared in the Special Cup in "Super Mario Kart." Choco Mountain appeared in the Flower Cup in "Mario Kart 64." Likewise, Mushroom Bridge appeared in the Flower Cup in "Mario Kart: Double Dash."
10. The Lightning Cup ranges from courses set in the sky to driving through a big pool of chocolate syrup. What course in the Lightning Cup, features humongous Cheep Cheeps, a wicked S-curve, along with a decimated stone building filled with bats?

Answer: Banshee Boardwalk

Banshee Boardwalk appeared as the third course in the Special Cup in "Mario Kart 64." Before entering into the bat infested building, you come upon a wicked S-curve which is a perfect place to lay bananas sending people spinning into the dark murky water.

In "Mario Kart 64", lightweight characters such as Peach, Yoshi and Toad could spin out occasionally by hitting the bats that run into you but that's not a problem now. The other courses that appear in the Lightning Cup are Choco Island 2 from "Super Mario Kart," Sky Garden from "Mario Kart: Super Circuit," and a Yoshi shaped racetrack hence the name, Yoshi Circuit which appeared in "Mario Kart: Double Dash."
11. Again after beating the Retro Cup on the 50cc level you get another playable character. Who is it this time?

Answer: Daisy

Koopa Troopa appeared as a racer in "Super Mario Kart," for the Super Nintendo but was replaced by Wario in "Mario Kart 64." He later appeared in "Mario Kart: Double Dash" with his team mate Paratroopa and he also appeared in "Super Mario Tennis." Daisy made her first appearance in "Super Mario Land," for the Game Boy and later returned on the N64 in "Mario Party 3," and she has become a staple for many other Mario games such as "Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour," "Mario Power Tennis" and the "Mario Party" series.
12. Two new items were added to "Mario Kart DS" and a very annoying one is the Blooper item. What does the Blooper item do that makes it so annoying?

Answer: sprays ink all over the screen

Even though water puddles appear on Luigi Circuit and oil slicks appeared in Super Mario Circuit 2 and in "Diddy Kong Racing," the Blooper item does not do that. The Blooper sprays nasty ink all over your screen so that it makes it difficult to see where you are going.
13. Waluigi appears in his first solo "Mario Kart" game. Waluigi is a character you can unlock and comes with a go-kart that is shaped like a wrecking crane. What is the name of this go-kart?

Answer: Gold Mantis

Even though Waluigi does fall in the middle class, he tends to run a bit on the heavy side. Waluigi made his first appearance in "Mario Tennis" for the N64. After that he has made several other appearances in games usually paired with Wario. Waluigi has even appeared as a trophy in "Super Smash Bros. Melee." As his name implies, Waluigi is the evil form of Luigi, but it has never been confirmed that Waluigi and Luigi are brothers even though it seems plausible. You can unlock Waluigi by beating the Retro Cup on the 100cc class.
14. Bowser's Castle has always been a staple in all "Mario Kart" games up to the release of "Mario Kart DS" but this one by far has had the most hazards as to date. Exactly how many types of hazards has Bowser stocked his castle with this time? Hint: The corkscrew turn is not a hazard.

Answer: six

Two of his hazards have appeared in every "Mario Kart" game up to the release of "Mario Kart DS" and those are the Thwomps and lava which usually a small rickety bridge goes over it. The other four hazards are fairly new. He has a room that rotates.

He has platforms that move back and forth near the end of the track. The worst of them all is the rotating circular bridge which is a perfect place to set traps. Unlike some other big gaps, the bridge does not send you into oblivion or earlier in the track.

It drops you down onto a courtyard which just takes a longer trek then if you would have crossed the bridge normally. The last hazard in his castle has been pretty normal but the forms have changed. He does have fire pillars in his castle which also appear in Airship Fortress in the Star Cup.

In "Mario Kart 64" there was a statue in the courtyard that spit fire. In "Mario Kart: Double Dash," there was a statue that spit fire in a room full of lava. Most people don't recognize the fire pillars though because it guards a very awesome shortcut.

The shortcut appears in the rotating room. Instead of going straight out the door, power slide near the end of the room, to find a secret passage that leads you straight to the nasty corkscrew turn.
15. Another interesting feature to "Mario Kart DS" is the fact of Mission mode. Mission mode requires you to fulfill certain tasks to get a rank. One of the tasks is beat so and so to the finish. Which one of the following is not something you have to beat to the finish?

Answer: King Bob-omb

King Bob-omb appears as a boss in Mission mode but you do not race against him. Instead you have to chuck Bob-ombs at him. You race a red car on Shroom Ridge. The easiest way to beat the red car, which is very fast and weaves constantly back and forth between lanes, is to use triple mushroom to cut across corners. You race Yoshi on Yoshi Falls and the easiest way to beat him is just to knock him off the cliff in the center of the stage. You race a stray Chain Chomp in Peach Gardens.
16. Next to Rainbow Road, Waluigi Pinball is probably my favorite course. Despite its awesome music, there are awesome pinball sound effects that dot the board. One is when you hit the circular rotating bumpers near the end of the course. What color is the center bumper that the others rotate around?

Answer: blue

Waluigi Pinball assumes that there must be some way to unlock Waluigi in "Mario Kart DS," and of course that's true. Waluigi Pinball starts off with some dash panels that send you into a vortex that shoots you off at full speed into the pinball machine that Waluigi has created. You then careen through several tight and dizzy turns surrounded by red ramps while trying to avoid humongous pin balls.

After getting through the tight turns you go into the most common format of a pinball machine which has bumpers which you must navigate around with some dangerous flippers too.

Then it's two turns and you're back at start.
17. Out of all the courses, excluding Battle courses, of "Mario Kart DS," who has the most named after them?

Answer: Luigi

Luigi the younger and more timid brother of Mario has three courses named after him, and they are Luigi's Mansion, and both Luigi Circuits in the Gamecube version and the Game Boy Advance version. Peach, Bowser, Yoshi and Mario all tie for second place as they have two courses named after them. Mario has Mario Circuit, and Mario Circuit 1. Peach has Peach Gardens and Peach Circuit. Yoshi has Yoshi Falls and Yoshi Circuit. And Bowser has Bowser Castle and Bowser Castle 2. All the other characters except for Toad, Dry Bones, Daisy, Shy Guy, and another hidden character I'll leave you to find out have one course named after them. Shy Guy only appears in download DS play matches.
18. Dry Bones appears in the races to show that he does have guts just not physically. Dry Bones appeared as a playable character for the first time in "Mario Kart DS" along with another game that came out at the same time. Which other game released near the same time as the release of "Mario Kart DS," did Dry Bones appear as a playable character?

Answer: Mario Party Seven

Dry Bones, like Birdo appears as a character you can unlock in "Mario Party 7." Dry Bones first started as an enemy in Mario games that could be stomped on but would just reassemble momentarily. The only way he could be defeated was with a star or a cape. In "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars," for the Super Nintendo he could only be defeated by performing a special attack.
19. Wario has appeared yet again to race in his purple convertible. Again he has fashioned his course Wario Stadium for monster truck rallies rather than go-kart racing. Which one of the following is not a hazard in Wario Stadium?

Answer: piranha plants

Wario took some elements from Waluigi Stadium which appeared in "Mario Kart: Double Dash" for the Gamecube. In that course Waluigi also planted Piranha plants along with fire chains. Wario has always been a fan of big jumps and Wario Stadium is not an exception.

This course almost had the same feel as Wario Stadium from "Mario Kart 64." Wario changed his course in "Mario Kart: Double Dash" to Wario Coliseum which was mostly mesh flooring. Also the track was so long that you only had to complete two laps!
20. Another one of my favorite courses is also the same course that you battle the boss from Mission Level three on. What is the name of this course?

Answer: Baby Park

Baby Park is one of my favorite courses because of the nickname that my friends and I have given it. We call it Carnage Central because it is such a short course and items and karts are just everywhere. If the objective wasn't to win it would make a great battle course. Baby Park is a very easy track because it is just one big ellipse. Baby Park appeared in "Mario Kart: Double Dash" originally and was named after Baby Mario and Baby Luigi. Baby Mario and Baby Luigi first appeared in "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island" for the Super Nintendo. Baby Mario appeared in "Mario Golf" for the N64. Baby Luigi was not a playable character until his appearance in "Mario Kart: Double Dash." Baby Mario and Baby Luigi also appeared in the DS game "Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time," which pitted the wits of the babies versus their grown-up selves.
