Video Games G-K: 'I' Trivia Questions

1. As in the movies, in the game Indy was accompanied through part of his adventure by a female sidekick. What is the name the woman who featured in "Fate of Atlantis"?

From Quiz
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

Answer: Sophia Hapgood

Sophia Hapgood, an old colleague now working in New York as a psychic, was reunited with Indy due to her expertise on Atlantis and her possession of an Atlantean artifact. The Sophia character later appeared in another game - "Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine" - but never appeared in the movies. The three wrong answers were the main female characters that did appear on the big screen.

2. How many major powers are there at the start of the game?

From Quiz Imperialism II (PC version)

Answer: Six

The major powers are: England, Spain, France, Sweden, Portugal and Holland. You play the game as the ruler of one of these six nations, vying for control of more than half of the old world provinces.

3. How many levels are in the game?

From Quiz The Immortal

Answer: Seven or Eight

The game is intended to have eight levels. Some versions only contain seven by excluding the sixth level (the spider level).

4. "Iggy's Reckin' Balls" was created by which manufacturer?

From Quiz "Iggy's Reckin' Balls" N64

Answer: Acclaim

Acclaim may not be too well known for making the video game "Iggy's Reckin' Balls" because it never became popular. Some other sucessful ones that you may be more familiar with are "All-Star Baseball", "Ecco the Dolphin", and "Turok".

5. At the start of the game, Ico is brought to the castle by three men from his village. What do the men use to open the first idol gate they encounter?

From Quiz ICO

Answer: A sword

The sword's blade crackles with a strange energy; it no doubt carries a portion of Yorda's power or resonates to her in some way. In the final half hour of gameplay, Ico will gain possession of the sword which acts as a substitute for Yorda's gate-opening ability. It is also the weapon Ico uses to deliver the death blow to the Queen.

6. How many total countries and tribes are there at the start of the game?

From Quiz Imperialism II (PC version)

Answer: Twenty-two

At the start of the game, there are always six major powers, six minor powers and ten tribes. It is not atypical for a game to conclude with all tribal and minor power provinces under major power control.

7. This character is found in the second last level of the game. Led into a trap, he is chained to the wall. What is his name?

From Quiz The Immortal

Answer: Dunric

Dunric's ring is found in the first level. If you give it to him, he provides you with some spells. Either way, he does not survive being tortured. Dunric reveals the major plot twist in the game's storyline.

8. What kingdom do Iggy and his friends come from?

From Quiz "Iggy's Reckin' Balls" N64

Answer: Cho-Dama kingdom

The Cho-Dama kingdom is a very quiet and peaceful one. It has puzzling giant structures known as Sacred Towers, constructed by ancient civilizations.

9. Ico, upon being brought to the castle, is abandoned as a sacrificial victim. How does he escape from the stone crypt he is locked in?

From Quiz ICO

Answer: An earth tremor breaks the crypt open

Maybe I missed something, but the earth tremor was never explained or justified. It was also strange in that there were no further earth movements for the rest of the game - it seems to have been a convenient one-time occurrence. Maybe Yorda had something to with Ico's escape? I doubt it though, because Yorda seemed to only become aware of Ico's existence after he had escaped and climbed the stairs to find her in the cage. Then again, the storyline of "ICO" is open to plenty of explanation so anything could be put forth!

10. One of the first tasks faced by Indy was finding a book, which ultimately proved to be the key to finding Atlantis. The book was written by which ancient Greek figure?

From Quiz Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

Answer: Plato

The book was a translation of "Hermocrates", the fabled lost dialogue of Plato. Plato actually wrote "Timaeus" and "Critias", through which the Atlantis myth is known today, although he never finished the latter, and as a result almost certainly never began to write the proposed "Hermocrates". However, in the game it not only existed, but was gathering dust only a few yards from Indy's office, amongst the shelves of the college where he worked!

11. In what type of terrain would you find diamonds?

From Quiz Imperialism II (PC version)

Answer: desert

At $400 per unit, diamonds are the most valuable commodity available. A single diamond mine built to level 2 can comfortably fund your research for the first third of the game. Considering that diamonds are only found in deserts, and deserts are only found in the new world, it behooves the player to explore uncharted waters to find the new world.

12. Who is Iggy's arch rival?

From Quiz "Iggy's Reckin' Balls" N64

Answer: Narlie

Narlie and Iggy have been arch rivals for years. Narlie is a jack-o-lantern who is quick going up platforms.

13. What is the first weapon Ico acquires?

From Quiz ICO

Answer: A stick

Ico receives this weapon shortly after he rescues Yorda from her cage. The stick is the weakest of all the weapons in "ICO" in terms of attacking power, but it still gets the job done in the end. Ico regularly needs to use the stick as a torch in order to solve puzzles within the castle, and it's particularly fun to use it to light bombs! Just don't be holding the bomb while it's lit; I kept mixing up my buttons and making Ico pick up flaming bombs!

14. Along with two units of peasant labor, what other two resources are required to manufacture one unit of bronze?

From Quiz Imperialism II (PC version)

Answer: One tin and one copper

Bronze is the primary resource used in the manufacture of forts, fighting ships and military units prior to the advent of steel. One iron ore and one coal make one steel, two iron ore make one cast iron and there is no lead in the game.

15. What is the name of the water monster who guards the "Sluice Gate"?

From Quiz The Immortal

Answer: Norlac

The Norlac guards the Sluice Gate. It's your job to lure it away, giving the goblins time to open the gate, flushing the Norlac out of the water system.

16. How many classes of ships are there?

From Quiz Imperialism II (PC version)

Answer: Four

The categories are: small merchant, large merchant, small warship and large warship. There are three generations of each class of ship, and therefore twelve total ship types available in the game. You start with three carracks in your fleet and (hopefully) end your game victoriously with a fleet of ironclads.

17. Which item can be used to expel spiders hiding in a treasure chest?

From Quiz The Immortal

Answer: Alcohol

In the sixth level, opening the treasure chest proves to be fatal, as your character is swarmed by small spiders. Pouring alcohol on the chest kills them, allowing you to claim the contents.

18. What color is Iggy?

From Quiz "Iggy's Reckin' Balls" N64

Answer: Green

There are many other different colored reckin' balls in the game. You can unlock even more with the use of cheats, because earning secret characters without cheats in this game is nearly impossible.

19. How do you go about saving your game progress in "ICO"?

From Quiz ICO

Answer: Ico and Yorda must sit together on a couch

"ICO" featured the most unique form of game saving I've ever seen in a game - my eyebrows went through the roof when I realised how the system worked! What I found especially touching though was that after a short time, Ico will eventually fall asleep on the couch... and if you wait a little longer, Yorda will also nod off on Ico's shoulder. :)

20. From the Ark of the Covenant to the Holy Grail, Indiana Jones has a history of finding what in reality is unfindable, so it came as no surprise that Indy eventually found the city at the bottom of the sea. Where exactly did he find it?

From Quiz Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

Answer: In the Mediterranean Sea

Plato placed the island kingdom 3,000 miles from Greece, in the Atlantic. However, it was deduced that he made a translation error, and Atlantis was actually 300 miles away, in the Mediterranean. The tenfold error later had dire consequences for the German colonel Kerner, who applied it to Plato's instructions for the Atlantean god making device. Instead of transforming him into a god, it turned him into a tiny goat-like creature, causing him to throw himself into a pool of lava in shock.

21. How many units of peasant labor is a single apprentice worker capable of producing each turn?

From Quiz Imperialism II (PC version)

Answer: Four

An apprentice can do the work of four peasants, but in addition to a unit of food, they also consume a unit of refined sugar each turn. A journeyman does the work of six peasants, but requires a cigar each turn in addition to one unit of food. A master does eight units of production (that's two apprentices!) but requires a fur hat in addition to the one food.

22. Which item can be used to dispatch the Goblin King?

From Quiz The Immortal

Answer: Spores

In the second level, you can defeat the Goblin King by planting spores in the soft dirt within his chamber, and fleeing to save you own life. When revisiting, you find him dying, and he asks you for some water. Your choice will affect the rest of the game.

23. In addition to a unit of food, what finished luxury item do master workers demand each turn?

From Quiz Imperialism II (PC version)

Answer: A fur hat

Masters are capable of doing the work of eight peasant laborers, but the furs necessary to make fur hats are found only in the new world, and only rarely at that. The considerable training costs (10 units of paper and $1000) usually prevents most players from having large numbers of masters in their employ; in fact, by the end of the game, most production is done by apprentices and journeymen, mostly due to the readily available supplies of sugar and tobacco in the new world.

24. Which button on the Nintendo 64 controller do you press in order to use the turbo feature?

From Quiz "Iggy's Reckin' Balls" N64

Answer: Z button

There is a turbo meter on the bottom left side of the screen. You press the Z button at any time that you have turbo in your turbo meter to use it.

25. What colour are Ico's eyes?

From Quiz ICO

Answer: Green

Maybe the lighting in my room is bad, but I didn't pick up on Ico's eye colour until the sequence when he killed the Queen and a close up was shown of his face! Originally I'd assumed his eyes were brown since he looks a bit Asian in appearance, but I think green looks more fetching.

26. What is the fourth and final developmental stage of heavy infantry?

From Quiz Imperialism II (PC version)

Answer: Guards

Grenadiers are third generation heavy infantry; rifle infantry are fourth generation medium infantry; cossacks are second generation light cavalry. Guards are the most potent infantry in the game; their firepower rivals that of third generation artillery (but with shorter range, of course).

27. Which weapon does Mordamir not deploy?

From Quiz The Immortal

Answer: Fireballs

Mordamir first attacks with a Lightning spell multiple times. Then, he attacks with a Sonic spell, then follows up with more Lightning attacks. He finishes off his pattern by levitating a skeleton, and tossing it at you.

28. What is Yorda's final dialogue as she sends the unconscious Ico off in a boat after the final battle?

From Quiz ICO

Answer: "Good bye"

Yet another extra in the PAL version includes a translation of Yorda's dialogue the second time you play. For the record, Yorda never said "I love you" or "I'm sorry" during the game, but did say "Thank you" as the Queen manipulated her into dropping Ico from the bridge. After the final battle and the Queen's demise, the castle started to break apart and Yorda was presumedly doomed to go down with it, but for the final game sequence which thankfully proved us wrong!

29. What technology is necessary to build cossack units?

From Quiz Imperialism II (PC version)

Answer: Recruit Steppe Horsemen

The other three technologies do not exist in this game. The technology has such a romantic-sounding name that I couldn't help but include it in the quiz.

30. Which creatures are only visible under certain conditions?

From Quiz The Immortal

Answer: Shades

Shades hide in the second to last room in the 1st level. They are invisible unless you light a torch on the wall with a fireball. Also, they are invisible in battle, making them difficult to defeat. Your best bet is to light the torch and just stay out of their way.
