Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which sighthound is capable of reaching over 40 mph and is thus most often used in races?

Answer: Greyhound

The greyhound is the dog world's most important speed merchant. But regardless of this title, it is a calm, relaxed, and affable companion.
2. What was the Borzoi's first use?

Answer: wolf hunting

The borzoi could easily outrun most wolves. They would work in pairs and grab the wolf behind the ears and pin it to the ground. But for almost a century, the borzoi has been bred for companionship, a job which it is most capable of fulfilling!
3. Which dog, of the primitive group, has a voice that sounds much like that of an Alpine yodeller?

Answer: Basenji

This breed is actually very similar to the wolf. Like the wolf, the Basenji has just one sex cycle each year, instead of two. It also rarely barks. Instead, it howls like the wolf.
4. What is the name of the rich, red colored sighthound that hunts by sight, sound and smell, instead of sight alone?

Answer: Pharaoh Hound

Skeletal remains indicate that the Pharaoh Hound, or dogs similar to it, have existed in the Middle East for at least 5,000 years. The Pharaoh Hound is often classified as a primitive breed because it hunts by sight, smell and hearing, not just by sight like most sighthounds.
5. Which sighthound is exceptionally fast, reaching speeds of up to 40 mph over short distances?

Answer: Azawakh

The Azawakh are often seen sleeping on the low, straw roofs of their owners' homes. If a night-time predator were to approach, the first Azawakh to see it would jump down from the roof and then would be joined by the others. They would form a pack and chase away or kill the intruder.

It is also used to course game, so it needed to be fast to slow the fleeing quarry until its owner arrived to kill it.
6. The Peruvian Inca Orchid has a high incidence of which problems?

Answer: All of these

Because the breed has the genetic mechanism that causes hairlessness, it has a very high incidence of tooth, skin, and toenail abnormalities, all of which need veterinary attention.
7. What do all purebred dingoes have?

Answer: white hair on feet

The Dingo has never been fully domesticated. It served as a camp cleaner, a sentry and even as an emergency source of food. Like the wolf, it has just one breeding cycle a year. All purebreds have white feet.
8. Which breed had almost completely vanished by the mid-1800s?

Answer: Irish Wolfhound

The Irish Wolfhound almost completely vanished, but was revitalized by Captain G.A. Graham, a British army officer. Today, this is one of the largest breeds of dogs and one of the most loyal in the world.
9. Which breed of sighthound will point and retrieve when hunting in packs with their owners?

Answer: Podenco Canario

The Podenco Canario often is used to hunt in packs-unusual for a sighthound. The breed is also very adaptive, as it can easily fit into almost any type of environment.
10. Which breed of sighthound was considered the poor man's race horse?

Answer: Whippet

Because the working class were not allowed or couldn't afford a greyhound, they had to make do with the Whippet. Because they also didn't have a fancy oval track, they would race the dogs in the back alleys and empty lots, where the Whippet became a straight-away sprinter. Their acceleration ability gives them fast starts in which they can cover 200 yards in 12 seconds!
11. What do many sighthound enthusiasts claim the Sloughi is?

Answer: a smooth haired saluki

There has been a great debate over whether the Sloughi was indeed a smooth haired Saluki. But many Sloughi breeders say that there are some distinct differences such as the height, weight and personality.
12. What was the reason for creating the American Staghound breed?

Answer: to catch and kill wolves and coyotes

When the American West was first being opened to settlers, there were many wolves and coyotes. These were a great threat to both livestock and people. The settlers used coursing hounds which were big enough to catch and kill wolves and coyotes to create this increasingly popular breed.
13. Does the Mexican Hairless comes in three coat varieties?

Answer: No

The Mexican Hairless comes in three size varieties. Standard, Miniature and Toy.
14. Is the Irish Wolfhound the only sighthound that has a rough coat?

Answer: no

The Irish Wolfhound, Scottish Deerhound, Lurcher and American Staghound all have rough coats.
15. The sighthound's temperament is:

Answer: independent, but loyal, loving & a real clown!

Many people think of the sighthound as a dumb, aggressive dog who can't be taught or has no feelings. The sighthound is an independent, loyal dog who is affectionate with its own family. They are extremely intelligent but do not follow your commands if they see no point in it. It is often said that once you have formed a bond of trust with a sighthound, it can never be broken.
