Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dread snake

Answer: adder

The Adder started life as Nada -- but the 'N' got lost as in apron and orange, over the centuries.
2. Adobe dwelling

Answer: abode

Why are abodes always 'humble'? I suppose if they are made of adobe (the Spanish for mudbrick) they rate to be less glamorous than if constructed of some other material.
3. English tile

Answer: shingle

Shingle is not just what loners feel like after too many glasses of beer. It is defined from the Latin word for a belt, and the disease is linked to this word.
4. Hiker's yell

Answer: shriek

To me 'shriek' is the noise a Banshee makes. Obviously it is linked to Screech; but not directly to Shrek. The latter started his life in a children's book by William Steig.
5. Roman house

Answer: manor

A manor is a medieval rather than Roman house but that isn't the point. Manor House is the name of an underground station in London. A rare example of subway tautology.
6. Clean javelin

Answer: Lance

If you lance a boil you also clean it; more tautology. Lance Boyle was one of the personas adopted by Barry Humphries; along with the more famous Dame Edna Everage and Australian cultural attache Sir Les Patterson. (Perhaps that is oxymoron.)
7. Organ noise

Answer: groan

Organs do make noise but not this sort. Well maybe some people can produce something similar from an armpit but that is as far as I am prepared to go.
8. Spoilt weapon

Answer: pistol

Pistol is a boastful character in three Shakespeare plays, subordinate to Falstaff. The word comes from a 16th century french gun, itself derived from the perceived similarity in shape to a whistle. I don't see it myself.
9. Rental discovered

Answer: Learnt

A little learning is a dangerous thing when playing Funtrivia. As Pope said 'Drink deep or not at all of the Pierian spring" -- which was the mythical fount of all knowledge.
10. Integral polygon

Answer: Triangle

Polygons do not refer to missing parrots but to many sided plane figures.
