Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A state capital city on the New England coast where one can find the USS Constitution, often at the end of The Freedom Trail

Answer: Boston

Boston, Massachusetts, was officially settled September 7, 1630. Boston is not only the largest city in Massachusetts but also the largest city in all of New England.

The USS Constitution is a three-masted ship, built in Edmund Hartt's Shipyard in Boston. It was the third frigate commissioned for construction under the fledgling United States government for the United States Navy. The Constitution was named by President George Washington and was launched in October of 1797. It saw military action in the First Barbary War as well as the War of 1812. The ship still exists and is often berthed at a pier in Boston's harbor, where it serves as a monument.
2. An inflammation of one or both of the small masses of lymphoid tissue on either side of the throat

Answer: tonsillitis

A tonsillectomy was at one time one of the most frequently performed surgeries, but doctors have scaled back on the number and reserve the procedure for bad cases of recurring tonsillitis. Many people commonly believe the tonsils are superfluous or serve no purpose; however, they consist of lymphatic tissue that fights infection. Fortunately, if the tonsils are removed, people do not experience any greater susceptibility to infection.
3. A mass or group of cells that all perform a similar function within the body of an organism

Answer: tissue

Four main categories of tissue are found in the human body: muscle, connective, epithelial, and nervous. Connective tissue is used by the body for the formation of bones, tendons, ligaments, and such, and the skin and the lining of some organs are made of epithelial tissue.

"Tissue" may, of course, also refer to thin, soft paper used for decorative or hygienic purposes. Chris Bechyne of the United States, as well as a group of his friends, once kept a single piece of tissue paper afloat in the air for 13 minutes and 46.12 seconds.
4. Finished leather with the flesh side napped to create a rough, velvety surface (Presley and Perkins had some footwear made of it.)

Answer: suede

The material's name comes from the French phrase "gants de Suede", which translates in English to "gloves from Sweden". Elvis Presley, known for many reasons but also for his cover of the Carl Perkins tune "Blue Suede Shoes", actually owned a pair of blue suede shoes that sold in auction for 48,000 pounds.
5. An adjective meaning "like paradise" or a word used to describe a place or state of great delight (Adam and Eve couldn't maintain this quality of their lives.)

Answer: edenic

The word is a derivative of the Biblical paradise where Adam and Eve lived as related in the book of Genesis. However, "Eden" is itself a derivative of an older Hebrew word meaning "place of pleasure".

Eden is also the name of a city in North Carolina where there is a brewery operated by Miller Brewing Company.
6. A familiar, sometimes humorous or endearing, apellation given to a person by others and meant to be used along with or instead of that person's real or legal name

Answer: nickname

"Nickname" comes from the Middle English phrase "an eke-name". "Eke" referred to "addition", so "an eke-name" meant "an additional name" or "another name". Some people are always having their names shortened by those who are familiar with them. There are many nicknames for "Elizabeth", for example, Eliza, Liza, Liz, Lizbeth, Beth, Bet, Betsy, Bets, Lizzie, Ellie, Bess, Bessie, Bee, Lisa, El, Betty, Elsa, Elsie, Izzie, Libby, Tess, and the list goes on.

Others are fortunate enough to have something completely new given to them.

For example, someone who is extremely slow to react to what's happening might be frequently called "Internet Explorer" while someone who is a drag or a bore might be renamed "Monday".
7. Ultimately from Hebrew, if this exclamation occurs at the beginning of something, it tends to mean "truly" or "certainly"; if it occurs at the end, then it tends to mean "so be it".

Answer: amen

The word "amen" journeyed through many languages and times. It came to the English language through Latin, which borrowed the word from Greek, which borrowed the word from Aramaic, which received the word from Hebrew. However, some argue that the word may be Aramaic in origin.

In the New Testament, Christ might begin a statement, "Amen, amen, I say unto you . . . " or, as it is sometimes translated, "Verily, verily . . . " or "Truly, truly . . . ". However, at the end of the prayer (now referred to as the Lord's Prayer) he taught his disciples, he says, "Amen", to affirm that he is sincere about the content of his prayer". Sometimes, people will ask for an "Amen!" from those they are speaking to, meaning they are asking for affirmation.

A preacher might ask for an "Amen" from his or her congregation when what he is really asking is "Do you agree with me?" or "Am I right about this?"
8. Of or relating to the gradual and natural but permanent end of a female's menstruation (The word you're looking for is an adjective.)

Answer: menopausal

The Greek origin of the word "menopause" translates essentially to "monthly pause" or "monthly cessation", referring, of course, to the cessation of a female's monthly menstrual cycle and thus her fertility. This process typically occurs in the female human begin between the ages of forty-five and fifty-five but is certainly not limited to this set of ages.

A fifty-nine-year-old woman from the United Kingdom gave birth naturally to a child in 1997 without any fertility treatments.
9. A reception room in a large house, an establishment from which a hairdresser operates his or her business, or a hall or gallery for the exhibition of an artist's work

Answer: salon

One of the most expensive hair salons in the world is the Orlo Salon in New York City. Run by Orlando Pita, this establishment charges $800.00 for a haircut.
10. A city on the California coast that boasts one of the United States' busiest ports, where one can find the RMS Queen Mary permanently docked

Answer: Long Beach

Long Beach, California, was officially incorporated as a city in December of 1897. Prior to that, it had been owned by various companies and private land owners following the Spanish occupation. Originally, the area occupied by Long Beach was settled by three different communities of the Tongva people.

The RMS Queen Mary sailed for the British Cunard Line from 1936 to 1967, when the ship was retired and bought by Long Beach. Much of the machinery of the ship was removed, and it was converted to serve as a hotel and tourist attraction. During World War II, the RMS Queen Mary was used as a transport ship for Allied soldiers. In December of 1942, the ship carried 16,082 American soldiers from New York City to Great Britain; this voyage set a record at that time for the most passengers ever transported aboard one travelling vessel.
