Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Motor City Car Parts

Answer: Detroit Pistons

I know this is kind of a lame clue but there just isn't a synonym for piston. According to the Pistons website, Fred Zollner started the club in Fort Wayne in 1941 and christened the team the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons. In 1957 they moved to Detroit and, although they had some great players, wallowed in mediocrity until the 80's.

The Pistons won back-to-back championships in 1989 and 1990, thanks to players like Isiah Thomas, Dennis Rodman, and Joe Dumars.
2. Windy City Baby Bears

Answer: Chicago Cubs

These lovable losers play in beautiful Wrigley Field on Chicago's north side. Famous players include two 500 home run hitters, Ernie Banks and Sammy Sosa. The first night game at Wrigley Field was supposed to be played on 8/8/88, but was rained out. Players were having fun that night slip-n-sliding across the tarp.

2004 Update: We're not the lovable losers anymore, baby. This is our year! Go Cubs!
3. Big Apple Northerners

Answer: New York Yankees

The Yankees are the most successful team in baseball, having won more than 25 World Series. Interestingly, they started out as the Baltimore Orioles from 1901-1902. They moved to New York a the Highlanders from 1903-1912, and took the name Yankees in 1913. (source:www.thebaseballpage.com)
4. Gateway to the West Redbirds

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

My favorite stupid fact about the Cardinals is that they once had the name St. Louis Perfectos. This name only lasted half a season in 1899. (source:www.thebaseballpage.com)
5. Beantown Irishmen

Answer: Boston Celtics

Larry Bird, Bill Russell, and Kevin McHale played on the beautiful parquet floor of Boston Garden. In 1995, the Garden was torn down and the teams began playing at the brand new Fleet Center - still on the Garden's parquet, which was moved to the new facility. The floor has since been replaced.
6. Sunshine State Fish

Answer: Florida Marlins

Nope, not the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Florida is the Sunshine State. The Marlins are a fairly new team, having started playing in 1993. THEY won a World Series, now why can't those Cubs?!

2003 Update: I can't even talk about the Marlins without choking.
2012 Update: The team moved to Miami and was renamed the Miami Marlins.
7. City by the Bay Seven-Squareds

Answer: 49'ers

The 49ers were named for the Gold Rush of 1849 that brought thousands of speculators to California hoping to strike it rich. Steve Young, quarterback for 12 years and an all-around good guy, led the team to a championship in Superbowl XXIV.
8. Second City Toros

Answer: Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls won more championships than any other team in the 1990's. They have retired the numbers of Jerry Sloan (4), Bob Love (10), and Michael Jordan (23). Jordan's number was shelved after he retired for the first time in 1993. When he came back, at first, he wore 45, but soon went back to 23. I guess retired numbers can be unretired by their original wearers.
9. Empire State Paul Bunyans

Answer: New York Giants

The New York Giants have been around since 1925. Their first Superbowl victory was in the 1986 season, in which they beat the Denver Broncos. Giant Paul Bunyan and his big blue ox, Babe, are heroes in American folklore.
10. City of Brotherly Love Bicentennials

Answer: Philadelphia 76'ers

According to the Sixers website, the 76ers started out as the Syracuse Nationals in 1937, and moved to Philly in 1963. They had a really stinky season in 1972-73, when they only won 9 games.

I hope you enjoyed this quiz, and I hope the spelling wasn't too tough! Thanks! :)
