Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. WORLD Today from my home in BRSBN (Brisbane), I go to GL FRM RPRT (Eagle Farm Airport), and hop onto a shiny red and white QNTS (Qantas) plane and fly south-west to the capital of STH STRL (South Australia)to DLD. What city am I in?

Answer: Adelaide

Adelaide, first settled in 1836, lies between the Gulf of St Vincent on the west to the Adelaide Hills in the east. It has the dual unusual features of being one of the few state capitals that was not a penal colony and it is one of the few planned cities in Australia.
2. MOVIES As the flight is over two hours long, there is a movie showing on the plane. It is one of my favourite movies, "BB", an Australian movie about a pig that thinks it is a dog. What is the movie's name?

Answer: Babe

"Babe"(1995) was an Australian blockbuster movie grossing $36 million domestically and $254 million world-wide. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
3. LITERATURE The movie finishes 40 minutes before landing so I pull out my novel, "W F TH NVR NVR" (1908), a famous Australian book about outback Australia. What is the full title of the book?

Answer: We of the Never Never

Jeannie (Aeneas) Gunn published her autobiographical novel about life on a station 400 miles south of Darwin in the Northern Territory. She was the first white woman to settle in the area. The term "Never Never" is a term for the Australian outback made famous by the poet, Barcroft Boake's poem, "Where the Dead Men Lie" (1897).
4. PEOPLE I am so engrossed in my book, I do not notice I am sat next to T BTTRS, the high-profile Australian journalist and business woman. What is this lady's name?

Answer: Ita Buttrose

Ita Buttrose's claim to fame was in the '70s as founding editor of "Cleo" a magazine aimed at young Australian females which featured (at the time) controversial frank sexual content. She went on to be the Editor of the "Australian Women's Weekly" taking it to be the world's best selling magazine per capita.
5. MUSIC Oh, my gosh! I must be dreaming (or at least be in First Class) as, in the seat on the other side of me, there is V DVS (Iva Davies), lead singer of iconic Australian rock group CHS. Which group is this?

Answer: Icehouse

Icehouse, first known as Flowers, is an Australian rock band first formed in 1977. Their first album, when they were still called Flowers was called "Icehouse". Because they had to change their name as there was another band with a similar name, they simply took the name of the album, which also contained a hit called "Icehouse"(1980).

Therefore Icehouse must be one of the few bands with a band name, album name and hit all with the same name. Icehouse had a string of hits but perhaps their most well known song is, "Great Southern Land"(1982).
6. GEOGRAPHY Driving south from the South Australian capital, 70 kilometres later I come to a ferry which will take me to a distinctly Australian named place: KNGR SLND. What is the name of this place?

Answer: Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island is Australia's third largest island, behind Tasmania and Melville Island in the Northern Territory. It was once connected to the mailand but lost its aboriginal population when it separated.
7. ANIMALS This Island is famous as a conservation area with much of the island reserved as National Park and Marine Park. In particular I have come to see two particular protected marine animals called STRLN S LNS (Australian sea lions) and NW ZLND FR SLS What is the name of these latter animals?

Answer: New Zealand Fur Seals

Australian Sea Lions (Neophoca cinerea) are found only on the south coasts of Western and South Australia. They are vulnerable with only 15 000 remaining. They are protected by law and their habitats are often zoned as national parks or conservation areas.
New Zealand Fur Seals (Arctocephalus forsteri)are found on the southern coast of Australia and around the South Island of New Zealand. They are sometimes called Australian Fur Seals or Southern Fur Seals.
Sea lions and seals are never found in the same place on Kangaroo Island. They each have their own discrete colonies. Ironically, the biggest sea lion colony on Kangaroo Island is found at Seal Bay.
8. SPORT I fly back into Brisbane just in time to watch one of my favourite sports: Twenty 20 Cricket. In this shortened form of the game I watch my local team the BRSBN HT (Brisbane Heat) play one of the southern teams: SYDNY SXRS. What is the name of the other team?

Answer: Sydney Sixers

Twenty 20 cricket is a new form of the game as each side bowls only 20 overs each so a game lasts about 3 1/2 hours instead of eight hours for a 50 overs one-day match and up to five days for a test match. The Brisbane Heat won the competition in 2012-2013 (Yay!). The Sydney Sixers won the competition the year before in its inaugural season.
9. HOBBIES At the cricket, I need to get a snack, so I feel like typical Aussie fare but I can't decide between two staples: a SSG RLL (Sausage Roll) or a MT P. What food is the latter?

Answer: meat pie

The ubiquitous meat pie is the unofficial snack food of Australia. While there are required standards about the meat content of a pie, there is no standard about the quality of the meat which is always disguised in a rich gravy. The pie also has thick pastry so it can be eaten in one hand (so you can have a beer in the other).
10. SCI/TECH I have been away from home for so long now, I should buy the special girl in my life a nice gift. I know, I will buy her a typically Australian gemstone. This type of gemstone is found mainly at LGHTNNG RDGE (Lightning Ridge) and CBR PDY (Coober Pedy) and is called PL. What am I about to buy?

Answer: Opal

Australia produces about 97% of all the world's opal. The most valuable opal, black opal is found mainly near Lightning Ridge in Northern New South Wales.
