Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" is a song made famous by which of these food-themed artists?

Answer: Meat Loaf

"I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" was released as a single from Meat Loaf's 1993 album "Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell". It was a great success, reaching number one in multiple countries.

Meat Loaf's real name is Marvin Lee Aday. His first album release came in 1971, titled "Stoney and Meatloaf" along with Shaun "Stoney" Murphy, with whom Aday had performed in a Los Angeles production of "Hair". Meat Loaf's first major success came with the release of "Bat out of Hell" (1977).
2. Which of these singer/songwriters was best known as the lead singer of the 1970s band "Bread"?

Answer: David Gates

David Gates had already made a name for himself as a singer and songwriter well before forming the group Bread with Robb Royer and Jimmy Griffin. It was as the lead singer of "Bread", though, that Gates truly became successful. Beginning with their second album "On the Waters", Bread achieved major success, having seven consecutive albums reach Gold. Between 1970 and 1973, they also had eleven singles reach the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
3. Dolores O'Riordan came to fame in the 1990s as the lead singer of a band whose first album release was entitled "Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?" Which band was this?

Answer: The Cranberries

The Cranberries did not begin with O'Riordan as a member of the group, but after she joined the band found their success. Originally called 'The Cranberry Saw Us', three of the groups founding members needed a new lead singer after Niall Quinn quit the band. O'Riordan won the spot.

The Cranberries with O'Riordan on vocals soon saw fame and fortune come their way. Their first release, "Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?" was not successful at first, but after catching the attention of MTV, that changed. Their second album "No Need to Argue" went triple platinum inside a year, and spawned a number one hit, "Zombie".
4. Which of these singers got their first number one position on the charts with "Maybellene"?

Answer: Chuck Berry

Charles Edward Anderson "Chuck" Berry was already performing with the Johnnie Johnson Trio when he made his way to Chicago and met Muddy Waters. Following Waters' advice, Berry signed with Chess Records. Shortly thereafter, success followed. His first number one hit (on the R&B Chart) was "Maybellene" in 1955.

Over the next 25 years, Berry produced more than 50 singles (including "Johnny B. Goode" in 1958) and 19 studio albums. He was among the first musicians to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when it opened in 1986.
5. John McCrea's sarcastic lyrics and signature half-singing/speaking monotone voice made him well-known as the lead singer of which food-themed band?

Answer: Cake

While one might naturally assume that the name of the band Cake refers to that yummy dessert, in actuality the band members say that it refers to the unwanted stuff that gets caked onto your shoes.

Through early struggles, John McCrea kept the band going by recruiting members as needed to fill holes created when other musicians moved on. The band released its first album "Motorcade of Generosity" in 1994, but real success did not come until the release of their second album "Fashion Nugget" and their single "The Distance". The album went platinum, and "The Distance" reached number four on the Modern Rock Tracks Chart.

In his personal life, McCrea is an ardent supporter of causes, especially in areas relating to global warming and world poverty.
6. What is the stage name of hip hop star O'Shea Jackson?

Answer: Ice Cube

Known popularly as 'Ice Cube', Jackson began his hip hop career in the mid-1980s with the group N.W.A. (Niggaz Wit Attitudes) along with Arabian Prince, DJ Yella, Dr. Dre, and Eazy-E. In 1989 he split from the group to pursue a solo career, releasing his first album "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted" the same year.

In addition to his music, Ice Cube has also achieved success in the film and television industry, beginning with his role as Doughboy in 1992's "Boyz in the Hood". Encouraged to not only act, but to also write, Ice Cube experienced outstanding success with his first screenplay "Friday", which made millions in its 1995 release and spawned multiple sequels.
7. Evan Dando has been the only constant member of this citrus-themed group, first formed in 1986. Which one?

Answer: The Lemonheads

Evan Dando first formed Lemonheads in 1986 with friends Ben Deily and Jesse Peretz while they were all teenagers at school in Boston. The group produced four albums before achieving a breakthrough with the album "It's a Shame about Ray" (1992). Between that and their next release, the group changed their name to "The Lemonheads".

During the band's heyday, Dando himself received flattering attention when he was named one of "People Magazine's" 50 Most Beautiful People in 1993. In 1998, the band took a hiatus, during which time Dando pursued a solo career as well as various projects in combination with other artists. In 2004, he reconstituted the Lemonheads.
8. What is the stage name of Canadian musician Merrill Beth Nisker?

Answer: Peaches

Peaches began her music career in the early 1990s with a group called Mermaid Cafe before forming her own group. It was during that time that she adopted the stage name Peaches. In the early 2000s she relocated to Berlin, Germany, where she has continued her career.

Nisker has become known for her racy shows and sexually explicit lyrics. Her career has continued steadily over the decades since her debut, releasing a studio album roughly every three years, and more than a dozen single releases. A number of her songs have also been featured in film and on television.
9. Billy Corgan founded which of these food-themed bands in 1987?

Answer: The Smashing Pumpkins

Originally formed by Corgan and guitarist James Iha in 1987, the Smashing Pumpkins have experienced a complete turnover in members, with the exception of Corgan himself, who has remained the only permanent member of the band. Over the years, Corgan has been the band's primary songwriter, and the unifying force between the band's different incarnations.

Along with the Smashing Pumpkins, Corgan's breakthrough into the mainstream music scene came with their second album release, "Siamese Dream" in 1993. Their third album, "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" (1995), subsequently debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.

The Smashing Pumpkins broke up in the year 2000, and for a while Corgan pursued a solo career. Then, in 2005, he placed full-page ads in "The Chicago Tribune" and "The Chicago Sun-Times" saying that he wanted to reform the band. It worked, because the following year they were back together.
10. The Spice Girls were originally formed in 1994 with five different members and five different spicy names. What was Geri Halliwell's stage name - the only one to actually reference a food?

Answer: Ginger Spice

The other members of the Spice Girls were: Melanie Brown (Scary Spice); Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice); Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) and Victoria Adams (Posh Spice).

Halliwell was launched to fame with her band-mates, but chose to leave the group in 1998 when she experienced struggles with depression. Following her time with the Spice Girls, Halliwell launched a successful solo career, producing solo albums "Schizophonic" (1999), "Scream If You Wanna Go Faster" (2001), and "Passion" (2005). In 2007, she rejoined her Spice-mates for a Spice Girls reunion.
