Even though Jon was born in 1962 in New York City, he grew up in Lawrence, New Jersey. He was born to a physicist(father) and an educational consultant (mother). He has an older brother named Larry.

Jon played on the men's soccer team at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia where he studied psychology. Jon was also a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity but left after six months.
