Hilts assisted the escape efforts of 76 Allied prisoners by supplying valuable information regarding the prison camp surroundings to Squad Leader Bartlett (Richard Attenborough). At the end of the film, Hilts' own attempt to escape by motorcycle was foiled by enemy troops.
