Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Deceased rock star David Bowie's real name was similar to that of another young Englishman who gained fame and fortune on an American TV show in the mid 1960s. What was David Bowie's real name?

Answer: David Jones

David St. Hubbins was the fictitious name of Michael McKean in the film, "This Is Spinal Tap". David Dolenz and David Tork I slipped in there to deliberately throw you. Rocker David Bowie was named David Jones--so he adopted the named Bowie to avoid confusion with The Monkees' Davy Jones.
2. Beatle Ringo Starr adopted his stage name because he was known to wear up to four rings at a time and because his solo spot as a member of Rory Storm and the Hurricanes was known as Starr Time. What is Ringo's real name?

Answer: Richard Starkey

Richie Furay, of course, was the rhythm guitarist/singer with Buffalo Springfield. Richard Snarkhead I simply made up and is just plain wrong, while Jet Rink was the character played by James Dean in his last film, "Giant." Richard--or Richie as he is known to most of his closest friends, was the oldest Beatle, born July 7, 1940.
3. Beatle John Lennon's middle name, as given at birth, was the same as an American brand of cigarettes. What was John's middle name?

Answer: Winston

While he was born John Winston Lennon on October 9, 1940, he later changed his name to John Ono Lennon. Kent, Marlboro and Salem are brands of cigarettes--like Winston. Only John was named in honor of British PM Winston Churchill, not the cigarette.
4. Former disc jockey and recording artist known as The Big Bopper had only one big hit, "Chantilly Lace". He died in 1959, and it was on the same day, as Don McLean wrote in his song "American Pie", that the music died. By what other name was The Big Bopper known?

Answer: J.P. Richardson

J.P. Richardson, known professionally as The Big Bopper, died in the same plane crash in February, 1959 that took the lives of Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. J.R. Ewing was played by Larry Hagman on the popular series "Dallas". The other answers were made up to confuse you.
As an interesting footnote, J.P. Richardson's actual given name was Jiles Perry Richardson, Jr.
5. Iconic folk artist and rocker Bob Dylan was born in Minnesota and settled in New York City where he found his fame and fortune, but lost his name. Bob's real name hardly seems to fit the legend of the maestro and poet he's become. What is Bob's original name?

Answer: Robert Zimmerman

Hibbings, Minnesota native Robert Zimmerman chose the extremely unusual stage name Elston Gunnn, (which is properly spelled here with 3 ns), when he joined up with pop singer Bobbie Vee as his short-tenured piano player. Bobby had to let Elston go when he realized he did not, in fact, own a piano, but could only play the instrument if one happened to be provided for at the gig!
Robbie Robertson was the guitarist in The Band. I made up the name Dylan St. Dylan.
6. Heavy metal pioneer Alice Cooper wasn't born as Alice, or even Cooper, for that matter. He chose a name that seemed exotic, spooky, and mysterious. Alice's real name was a bit too mundane for a rock star; so what name was Alice born with? This was long before school let out.

Answer: Vincent Furnier

While Vincent Van Gogh was the famous tone deaf painter and Robert Zimmerman is, of course, Bob Dylan. As for Vinnie Bigelo it's a name I simply made up.
Born in Detroit, rocker Alice found fame fronting his heavy rock band dressed in a combination of ghoulish and/or women's clothes. Snakes, and other creepy stage props were adopted which helped transform an otherwise ordinary singer into something outrageous, spooky and memorable.
7. Roger McGuinn oddly changed his name after he found fame as a member of L.A. folk-rock pioneers The Byrds. By what name was the ex-Byrd first known?

Answer: Jim McGuinn

Reportedly, the change was made according to some spiritual transformation he went through.
Jim McGuinn was the only member of The Byrds who remained with the band through all the various personnel changes, including David Crosby (later of CSN), as well ace guitarist Clarence White and Flying Burrito co-founders Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman.
Jim McGuinn has remained true to his folk-rock roots, preferring all these years later to still jingle-jangle on his Rickenbacker 12-string guitars.
8. English New Wave rocker Elvis Costello, growing weary of what he thought was an odd and unlikely stage name reportedly once nearly changed back to his original name. What is punk rocker Elvis' real name?

Answer: Declan MacManus

There's no other name for English rocker Elvis Costello, whose real name is Declan MacManus. His first LP was called "My Aim Is True", which was taken from a line in the song "Alison", one of Elvis' finest ever compositions.
So blame it on Cain or Veronica, but despite the fact the Angels might have wanted to wear his red shoes, Elvis Costello has kept his curious stage name.
9. Ex-Beatle and ex-Wings leader Sir Paul McCartney's whole and true given name is known to his most ardent fans. If you have listened to what the man said, your mother, as well as you, should know Paul's true name. What is Sir Paul's real name?

Answer: James Paul McCartney

Accept no substitute! There was no truth to the "Paul is dead" rumor and the one and only original Beatle Paul lives on as James Paul McCartney. Born on June 18, 1942, Paul was named after his father.
10. Original Rolling Stone bass guitarist Bill Wyman's real name is known to few fans, so you deserve to feel some great "Satisfaction" if you know Bill's given name. What is the bassist's real name?

Answer: William George Perks, Jr.

Being an integral part of The Rolling Stones' sound, Bill Wyman's bass lines were always tightly locked in with drummer Charlie Watts' identifiable drumming style, making the pair the enviable rhythm section other rock bands only aspired to.
Retired from his role as the bass guitarist for The Rolling Stones, Bill Wyman pursued some personal musical projects after leaving the group and quite gladly has stayed out of the limelight since.
As of 2016, Bill has been diagnosed with cancer. From all his fans, let's wish him the best of health through his troubling times.
