Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am a character from a popular TV series that premiered in 1997. I am more than 100 years old. I was born William, but have gone by another name ever since I was changed into something else. I had a girlfriend who was mad, but she left me eventually. I lived in California, but I was only able to go out at night. Over the course of the TV show, I changed from antagonist to ally. In the last episode of the show in season seven, I saved the world and died. Who am I?

Answer: Spike

The show is, of course, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
When human, Spike used to be a poet, and a "bloody bad one" at that, which earned him the derisive nickname "William the Bloody." Once he was changed into a vampire by Drusilla, that nickname took on a whole new meaning.
Spike and Drusilla were introduced in season 2 as the main antagonists of the season, but Spike later returned to Sunnydale broken and disillusioned after Drusilla had left him. He was later subjected to an experiment that prevented him from hurting humans, so he took up demon hunting and gradually became Buffy's ally and, eventually, lover.
2. I am a character from a very popular TV show that premiered in 1994. I am a Special Agent for the FBI, but I used to work for both sides, the good and the bad, until I decided to go rogue. I lost an arm and was later shown to use a prosthetic arm. My nickname is 'Ratboy'. I am an enemy of the main character of the series, but the fans love me. I was killed in the last episode of season 8. Who am I?

Answer: Alex Krycek

Krycek was introduced in season 2 of "The X Files" as Mulders new partner, but it became clear very soon that he was a double agent and was sent there to work against Mulder and spy on him. Krycek later went rogue and was for a while hunted by both sides. Played by Nicholas Lea, the character enjoyed immense popularity with fans, and an episode with Krycek in it would almost always promise to add another piece of information to the ongoing mythology of the show.
3. I have appeared in a series of movies, one of which was a remake of my first, and a TV show, but I am originally a character from a book. I am so dangerous because I don't look it. I am not young. I am intelligent, polite and well-mannered. I have killed without remorse, but I have also saved an agent's life. My nickname rhymes with my first name. I used to have a successful psychiatric practice until my nemesis, an FBI agent, found out that I had made a habit of killing my patients and eating them. I am often seen in jail wearing a leather mask to make sure I won't bite. Who am I?

Answer: Hannibal Lecter

Well-written and multi-faceted, Dr. Hannibal Lecter is probably one of the most recognizable characters from movies made in the 1990s. The novels are written by Thomas Harris, but it was the films, above all "The Silence of the Lambs," which made Hannibal Lecter something of a cult figure, owing not least to Anthony Hopkins's spot-on performance and his extraordinary chemistry with Jodie Foster, who played the young agent, Clarice Starling, who is forced to work with him. Hannibal Lecter, as played by Anthony Hopkins, was chosen as the #1 movie villain of all time by the American Film Institute in 2003, and his name regularly pops up in similar "Greatest Villains" lists.
In chronological order, the movies include: "Manhunter" (which was later remade as "Red Dragon"), "The Silence of the Lambs," Hannibal," "Red Dragon" (a remake of "Manhunter," this time also starring Anthony Hopkins), and "Hannibal Rising," a prequel detailing his childhood and adolescence. The TV show "Hannibal" details the events between "Hannibal Rising" and "Red Dragon."
Fun fact: In the books, Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling actually fall in love and run away together at the end of "Hannibal."
4. The 1994 movie I was in was directed by Mike Nichols. I used to be a businessman, well-off, married and successful. But since I was bitten by an animal, I have changed. My senses improved. I could smell that my wife had an affair with another man. Only one woman knew the truth about me. I was able to save her life, but then I transformed into a new being. You may hear me at night howling at the moon. Who am I?

Answer: Will Randall

"Wolf" details the change of businessman Will Randall into a werewolf, but it does so in a rather subtle way, setting it apart from other werewolf movies. Jack Nicholson was commended for his body language in this film, and "Wolf" also won a Saturn Award for Best Writing.
5. I am the most popular character in horror history. I am immortal. I was cruel when I was a man, now I am more than that. I can transform into animals. I live in a castle. Tons of movies have been made about me. Who am I?

Answer: Dracula

Count Dracula is without a doubt the most popular and best-known vampire in history. Most film versions are based on Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula," and the character has spawned endless spin-offs, variants and parodies. There are movies, TV shows, plays, musicals and video games about Dracula, and actors who have portrayed him include Christopher Lee, Gary Oldman, Leslie Nielsen, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.
6. I have been in a very successful 1996 movie. I seem to be the perfect boyfriend: good-looking, sensitive, in love with my girlfriend. I love scary movies. My mom left my dad, abandoning me. I blamed my girlfriend's mother for it, so me and my best friend killed her. Who am I?

Answer: Billy Loomis

Wes Craven's "Scream" revived the slasher movie genre when it was believed long dead. The trick was simple: do not take yourself too seriously. By cleverly playing with all the clichés of the genre and sometimes making use of the meta level, Wes Craven managed to create a recipe for success.

The four "Scream" movies are self-reflective in a way, and each makes specific mention of what they are and work it into their plot lines: a horror film, a sequel, a trilogy, and a remake.
7. I am a character from a 1999 movie. I am a fallen angel. Literally. I want to return to heaven, but if I could, it would be the end of the world. Together with my best friend, the former angel of death, I was banished to live in Wisconsin, but when I heard of a real possibility to get back to heaven, I flipped out. I started raging, killing people, and even killing my friend. I was still forgiven by God in the end. Who am I?

Answer: Bartleby

"Dogma" is the fourth movie in Kevin Smith's Jersey series of films. The characters of Jay and Silent Bob (the latter played by Kevin Smith himself) appear in all of them; however, "Dogma" allows them more screen time than usual and gives them a little more character depth. Seen as controversial by many religious groups, "Dogma" makes fun not so much of the Catholic church as of the absurdity of blind faith and strict belief in, well, dogma.
8. I am a character from a series of books by Anne Rice, some of which have been turned into movies. I am immortal and I love it. I have to kill to survive, but I love that, too. I am handsome, charming, and I can play the piano. I was looking for a companion and found him in Louisiana, but he turned out to be a complicated man. He tried to kill me twice, but I still 'live'. Who am I?

Answer: Lestat de Lioncourt

Lestat is the main character in Anne Rice's "Vampire Chronicles." However, the first instalment, "Interview With the Vampire," focuses on Louis, Lestat's companion. Lestat was played by Tom Cruise in the film version, something Anne Rice was not happy with at first until she had seen the film. Then she started campaigning heavily for it.
9. I am not really a villain - I am just the antagonist. I'm a policeman in 19th-century Paris. I am convinced that a man always stays the same, that's why I'm still after the main character, a thief. I strongly believe in principles and norms. When I learned that the man I had hunted really had changed, I couldn't bear the thought that my world wasn't the way I thought it was. I committed suicide. My creator is a famous French author, but I've been in lots of movies and in a musical as well. Who am I?

Answer: Inspector Javert

Victor Hugos epic "Les Misérables" details the life and times of former convict Jean Valjean, who served nineteen years in a chain gang for stealing a loaf of bread (and subsequent attempts to escape). Upon his release, Valjean has an encounter with a bishop which changes him forever and makes him want to be a good man.

He manages to become wealthy and respected, but when he and Javert (who used to be a prison ward and is now the chief of police) meet again, he is forced to run again. Javert continues to hunt him, doggedly believing in the "once a thief, always a thief" principle.

When he finally realizes that Jean Valjean is a good man now, his world falls apart and he drowns himself in the river Seine.
10. I have been in seven books and eight movies. I am a wizard. I am so evil that I can't even die because I'm not human enough. I lost my power when I tried to kill a little boy. Eleven years later I tried to rise again, but was defeated by this boy again. From then on, I tried again and again, but this boy is my nemesis. Neither of us can live while the other survives. Who am I?

Answer: Voldemort

This is You-Know-Who a.k.a. Lord Voldemort a.k.a. Tom Riddle from the "Harry Potter" books, arguably the most successful series of books (and movies) of our time. A phenomenon that began in the mid-nineties, "Harry Potter" has conquered the world and made its creator, British writer Joanne K. Rowling, the richest woman in Great Britain.
