Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Russian stray became the first living creature to orbit the earth in 1957?

Answer: Laika

The name Laika means "barker" in English. She went into orbit on November 3, 1957, and only lived for the first few hours of the flight. The craft that she travelled in, Sputnik 2, was not designed to return to Earth so it was never intended for her to come back. A monument to her was erected in 2008 in Moscow.
2. Which faithful wolfhound is said to have been slain by his master, who assumed he had killed his baby, only to discover afterward that he had killed a wolf to protect the child?

Answer: Gelert

Welsh folklore claims that Gelert was the favourite hound of Llywelyn the Great, who after hearing the dog's dying yelp never smiled again. The grave mound in Beddgelert, which is supposedly where the poor dog was buried, probably has more to do with the scheme of an 18th century hotel owner trying to attract tourists to the village.
3. Which was the first dog to win the English Greyhound Derby twice, in 1929 and 1930.

Answer: Mick the Miller

Mick the Miller was bred in Ireland and taken to England to race at White City Stadium. After his death he was stuffed and, for a long time, was one of the first exhibits on show as you entered the Natural History Museum in London; he was later moved to the Natural History Museum in Tring.
4. Which dog became famous after his death as the subject of a painting done by his late master's brother?

Answer: Nipper

The painting 'Dog Looking At and Listening to a Phonograph' was done by Francis Barraud who had cared for Nipper after his brother's death. What was originally an Edison-Bell phonograph was replaced by a Berliner disc gramophone prior to being sold to the Gramophone Company.
5. Who was the dog who sat by his master's graveside for 14 years until he himself passed away?

Answer: Greyfriars Bobby

After nine years of his vigil it was suggested that Bobby should be destroyed as an owner-less dog, the Lord Provost of Edinburgh bought him a license and made him the city's responsibility. After his death he was buried inside the gates of Greyfriars Kirk-yard and a granite fountain with a statue of him was erected in Edinburgh.
6. Which dog was the constant companion of Blue Peter's John Noakes?

Answer: Shep

Shep appeared on "Blue Peter" from 1971-1978 and on "Go With Noakes" from 1976-1980, "Get down Shep" became a catchphrase for a whole generation of youngsters. He passed away in 1987.
7. Which black and white mongrel found the Jules Rimet Trophy a week after it had been stolen from Westminster City Hall?

Answer: Pickles

Pickles found the World Cup in a hedge in South Norwood, London, while taking his master for a walk. When England won the cup later in the year, he was a guest at the victory banquet.
8. Which dog is believed to have saved a total of twenty seven people from the River Tawe?

Answer: Swansea Jack

A typical Newfoundland, Swansea Jack would dive into the water to pull people out without any prompting. There is a monument to him on the promenade in Swansea. He is the only dog to have been awarded two bronze medals for bravery.
9. Who was the only dog ever to be enlisted in the Royal Navy?

Answer: Just Nuisance

Just Nuisance's owner ran the United Services Institute in Simon's Town South Africa. The Great Dane used to follow the sailors on train journeys which caused the Railway Company to insist that either someone paid his fares or he would have to be put down.

The solution was to enlist him so that he got free travel as a serviceman. He was enlisted in 1939 and rose to the rank of Able Seaman.
10. Who was the boat riding Jack Russell who accompanied chef Rick Stein on his television series?

Answer: Chalky

Chalky, with his typical Jack Russell fearlessness, captivated television viewers with his antics. He even had his own range of merchandise and his own website.
