Answer: Laika

The name Laika means "barker" in English. She went into orbit on November 3, 1957, and only lived for the first few hours of the flight. The craft that she travelled in, Sputnik 2, was not designed to return to Earth so it was never intended for her to come back. A monument to her was erected in 2008 in Moscow.

Welsh folklore claims that Gelert was the favourite hound of Llywelyn the Great, who after hearing the dog's dying yelp never smiled again. The grave mound in Beddgelert, which is supposedly where the poor dog was buried, probably has more to do with the scheme of an 18th century hotel owner trying to attract tourists to the village.

Answer: Mick the Miller

Mick the Miller was bred in Ireland and taken to England to race at White City Stadium. After his death he was stuffed and, for a long time, was one of the first exhibits on show as you entered the Natural History Museum in London; he was later moved to the Natural History Museum in Tring.

The painting 'Dog Looking At and Listening to a Phonograph' was done by Francis Barraud who had cared for Nipper after his brother's death. What was originally an Edison-Bell phonograph was replaced by a Berliner disc gramophone prior to being sold to the Gramophone Company.

After nine years of his vigil it was suggested that Bobby should be destroyed as an owner-less dog, the Lord Provost of Edinburgh bought him a license and made him the city's responsibility. After his death he was buried inside the gates of Greyfriars Kirk-yard and a granite fountain with a statue of him was erected in Edinburgh.

Just Nuisance's owner ran the United Services Institute in Simon's Town South Africa. The Great Dane used to follow the sailors on train journeys which caused the Railway Company to insist that either someone paid his fares or he would have to be put down.

The solution was to enlist him so that he got free travel as a serviceman. He was enlisted in 1939 and rose to the rank of Able Seaman.
