He was a very successful actor with more than 150 appearances to his credit. His first attempt at directing came in 1940 with "Rose Scarlatte". "Bicycle Thieves" was his ninth and his very last one "The Voyage" was released in 1974.
Carlo Ponti was a film produce but not an actor. Michael Cimino and Francis Ford Coppola are both American.
