Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Calvin gets scary mail made of letters cut from newspapers. Who turns out to be sending them?

Answer: Hobbes

His "secret detractor" sends him insults in code. Calvin is both scared and excited by the intrigue. When he finds out Hobbes sent them all, he's angry until Hobbes has the idea of pulling the same prank on Susie, and all is forgiven.
2. During show-and-tell, Calvin says his mother does what exciting thing while he's at school?

Answer: Fights crime

She dresses in a cape, leotard, boots, and "fights crime as a super heroine". As he's so antagonistic towards his parents, it's nice to see him fabricating a cool story about one of them. In a joke for the adults, his Dad reads the note from school and says, "Wow, show me that outfit sometime."
3. Calvin says, "No one gives the evil eye like Dad." How does Dad give the evil eye?

Answer: His body turns into a giant eyeball.

Dad's expression is scary enough that Calvin perceives him instead as a giant, angry eye, and Calvin immediately changes his plans to ditch homework for play. This body-as-eye could be a reference to the cartoon "Book Revue", in which Daffy does a double take that turns his entire body into a giant eyeball.
4. Calvin has a "Stupendous Man" adventure in the book "Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat." What challenging task does he transform into the superhero to do?

Answer: Take a test

He thinks he can ace the test with Stupendous Man's powers. Unfortunately, he just gets into trouble for leading his teacher on a chase and dressing up. He also fails the test. In a different arc, he uses his "superpowers" to drop a huge snowball on Susie. He never uses the costume to do any of the wrong answers.
5. In another arc, Calvin nearly does something disgusting for money. What does Susie pay him to do?

Answer: Eat worms

She offers a nickel if he eats five worms, something he doesn't actually want to do for a nickel (he wants 50 cents). He's rescued by his Mom just in the nick of time.
6. What type of snowman does Calvin's Mom say won't be in the front yard? Perhaps if it were facing a different direction, she wouldn't care as much...

Answer: Anatomically correct

Susie makes a snowwoman with breasts, so Calvin decides to incorporate male anatomy into his. We'll have to take his Mom's word for it, because we see only the back of the snowman. The strips in the book also show snowmen's heads on pikes, disgusted snowmen, melting snowmen, and one based on his Dad.
7. Calvin enters a safety poster contest with the slogan "Be Careful or Be Roadkill". What unusual decoration does he use for his poster?

Answer: Spaghetti sauce

He presents his poster in 3-D Gore-o-Rama, so it attracts real insects. Unsurprisingly, the judges don't like his visceral take on the topic and he doesn't win. Susie does. Calvin should have learned the lesson of how to lose with humility and grace, but instead thinks the contest was rigged and learns nothing.

As Hobbes sarcastically puts it in another strip, "Live and don't learn, that's us."
8. Calvin recites part of which poem to Hobbes? It's quite appropriate considering his species...

Answer: The Tyger

He recites the first lines of William Blake's poem: "Tiger, Tiger, burning bright, In the forests of the night." In the poem, "tiger" is spelled "tyger", but it's written in the strip as "tiger". Calvin then postulates that perhaps the tiger was struck by lightning and is literally on fire, not understanding the figurative component. Hobbes isn't amused and wishes he were asleep.
9. If Calvin doesn't want to take any lessons this summer, what does Mom tell him he has to do? (Sounds like she just doesn't want him around the house.)

Answer: Spend a certain length of time in his treehouse

He has to stay there for two hours, three times a week, the idea being that Mom mostly sends Calvin to lessons to get a respite from him. This way is certainly cheaper, and more fun for Calvin.
10. In the Sunday strip that gives the book the title "Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat", Calvin has an encounter with Hobbes. What does his friend do?

Answer: Pounces on him at night

His parents think he had a nightmare or was sleepwalking, but Calvin proclaims it was a "Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat". Hobbes loves to have exciting, tiger-like fun, but Calvin would rather have a peaceful midnight trip for a glass of water.
