Howard Hughes designed and built aircraft. He also broke many airspeed records between 1935 and 1938. He died in 1976, aboard an airplane, while traveling from Acapulco, Mexico to Houston, Texas.

The facade and neon sign were being preserved and plans were being made to build a new Moulin Rouge when a devastating fire destroyed what was left on May 6, 2009. Luckily, the neon signed had been moved to the Las Vegas Neon Museum.

The implosion of the Hacienda did not really go according to plan. When the dust cleared on January 1, 1997, the southernmost portion of the hotel was still standing (at an angle). By noon, the contractors had brought in a wrecking ball and began hitting the stubborn hotel with it.

They succeeded in knocking a few holes in the foundation and battering the upper floors. Finally, the workmen started chopping at the lower floor as if chopping down a tree and a few minutes after 2 p.m., the Hacienda officially crumbled making way for the Mandalay Bay resort.
