Howard Hughes designed and built aircraft. He also broke many airspeed records between 1935 and 1938. He died in 1976, aboard an airplane, while traveling from Acapulco, Mexico to Houston, Texas.

Answer: The Sands

The Sands was famous for the entertainers it showcased. Nat King Cole, Lena Horne and Sammy Davis Junior played at the Hotel but weren't allowed to stay there due to segregation. The owner of the Sands was the first to break this barrier and allow them to stay in the hotel.

Answer: The Landmark

The Landmark hotel was imploded on November 7, 1995. At the time, it was the second tallest building ever to be imploded.

Elvis received a cool reception and was panned by Vegas entertainment critics. Siegfried and Roy also made their debut at this hotel.

The hotel/casino was only open for six months until November of 1955, probably due to poor financial management. The building remained intact until 2003 when it was gutted by fire. The facade and neon sign were being preserved and plans were being made to build a new Moulin Rouge when a devastating fire destroyed what was left on May 6, 2009. Luckily, the neon signed had been moved to the Las Vegas Neon Museum.

The Stardust closed its doors on November 1, 2006 and was imploded on March 13, 2007. The Stardust was damaged by Martians in the movie "Mars Attacks" and the famous neon sign was seen in "Austin Powers" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas".

The hotel was imploded on April 27, 1998 and was rebuilt and reopened in August 2000 with 2600 rooms. Although rebuilt as The Aladdin it was sold in 2003. Most renovations by the new owner were done while the hotel remained open. The hotel had its official reopening on April 17, 2007 as Planet Hollywood Casino and Resort.

The Dunes was known as "The Miracle in the Desert" and offered a desert themed oasis. The Dunes was imploded to make way for the luxurious Bellagio hotel. At the time, the Bellagio was the costliest hotel ever built at 1.6 billion dollars.

The implosion of the Hacienda did not really go according to plan. When the dust cleared on January 1, 1997, the southernmost portion of the hotel was still standing (at an angle). By noon, the contractors had brought in a wrecking ball and began hitting the stubborn hotel with it.

They succeeded in knocking a few holes in the foundation and battering the upper floors. Finally, the workmen started chopping at the lower floor as if chopping down a tree and a few minutes after 2 p.m., the Hacienda officially crumbled making way for the Mandalay Bay resort.
