Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a movie mash up, the poet Dennis Barlow finds love with Aimee, hair stylist to the recently departed under the lustful eye of Mr. Joyboy. However, Randle McMurphy also has designs on Aimee. Nurse Ratched puts a swift end to everyone's schemes with recommendations for lobotomies all around. Which comic tragedy is this?

Answer: The Loved One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Evelyn Waugh wrote "The Loved One" and it was turned into a 1965 film about antics in a funeral home in California. Rod Steiger played the ultra-fussy Mr. Joyboy whose affections were stretched between his demanding mother and his stylist assistant Aimee. Dennis Barlow also loved Aimee and eventually won her but also gets bound up in the funeral home owner's (Jonathan Winters) fraudulent scheme to send all the corpses he's contracted to bury into outer space and then build a retirement home on the unused plots. Ken Kesey wrote "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" also made into a movie which won all five top 1975 Academy Awards.

The struggle for control between the tightly wound Nurse Ratched and the chaos loving Randle McMurphy in a psychiatric ward culminates in McMurphy's spirit-killing lobotomy.
2. This is a film/play mash up with Maurice Walsh and G.B. Shaw as authors but what is it called? John Thornton, an American boxer, returns to his family's homeland and falls in love with a red-haired Irish spinster. Her brother refuses to hand over her dowry when she marries because he wants her to accept the older of her two guardians, Roebuck Ramsden, as her sole guardian and husband. She refuses and a donnybrook ensues while a play "Don Juan in Hell" is performed for the village. She ultimately marries Jack Tanner, another of her guardians. How many guardians does one fiery tempered Irish lass need?

Answer: The Quiet Man and Superman

Directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, "The Quiet Man" is about an American boxer who buys the Irish farm he grew up on and marries the beautiful Mary Kate Danaher. When her brother refuses to pay her dowry, Mary Kate tries to shame her husband into making her brother cough up what he owes her.

A very long fist fight and the restoration of peace in the Thornton household take up the rest of the film. "Man and Superman", written by George Bernard Shaw hits on several of Shaw's favorite themes: the independence of women (he was for it) and women manipulating men into marrying them (he was against it).

The play-within-a-play "Don Juan in Hell" is frequently cut when "Man and Superman" is performed,
3. In a movie mash up, Oliver Barrett IV and Jennifer Cavilleri meet cute at the library and are soon deeply in love. Jennifer's terminal illness doesn't come between them but the interference of Ben and Katie Jordan, with their incessant navel-gazing and bitterness about their 15 year old failing marriage, does. The kids call it off rather than turn out like the Jordans. What depressing mash up is this?

Answer: The Love Story of Us

1970 saw the release of "Love Story" in which Ryan O'Neil played Oliver and Ali McGraw played Jenny. It's that old boy meets girl, boy is richer than girl, boy's father objects to marriage and cuts him off, girl dies type of tearjerker.
"The Story of Us" was less tender than "Love Story" examining the ennui of a middle aged marriage on the rocks. It didn't receive good reviews.
4. This one book/one song mash up concerns the several wardships of John Jarndyce and a long, drawn out legal case about the terms of a will. Oddly enough, all the action is conducted in a New Orleans brothel, with Esther Summerson bewailing the fact that she's one girl that's been ruined by the brothel. She reports, though, that her mother, Lady Honoria Dedlock, has sewn her a pair of new blue jeans. So things may get better. What's the new title?

Answer: Bleak House of the Rising Sun

Dickens' riff on the cumbersome English Victorian legal system helped fuel a legal reform movement that resulted in reforms being enacted in the 1870's. "Bleak House" wasn't all bleak since young love triumphed over greed and a wastrel reformed before death. "The House of the Rising Sun" is clearly lamenting a wasted life, whether sung as a male customer lured into sin or as a female provider of that sin.

The song's origin is unclear.
5. In this two book mash up we find Alexandre searching feverishly for his wife Margot, thought to be murdered eight years ago and only recently heard from. Alexandre is being fingered for two murders similar to his wife's but Jay and Kay and their amazing piscine friends (singular and plural, scarlet and cerulean) show up to get him to a safe place. He hides with Ned, whose feet stick out of bed. What book do we have here?

Answer: Tell No One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

Harlen Coben's "Tell No One" was made into a 2006 French movie. Both book and movie have a bittersweet ending with Alexandre and Margot reuniting but with the loss of Margot's father.

There's no bitterness of any sort in Dr. Seuss's "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Jay and Kay travel through a world of countable, colorful animals. Is there a plot? No! Are there fun and rhymes? Absolutely!
6. Two movies go into this mash up, but what movie do they make? Wang Lung and O-Lan work hard on their land. Then famine comes and they have to sell all their possessions except their house and the land. They must move south to a big city where they can work to eat. But how can they get there? Luckily, Mac, Zeebo and Wiploc crash into a Valley girl's pool and, after a good shaving, are ready to take Wang's family south in their space ship.

Answer: The Good Earth Girls Are Easy

"The Good Earth" was filmed in 1937 and starred Paul Muni and Louise Rainer. It was taken from the book of the same name by Pearl Buck. It showed, among other things, the impermanence of wealth and family feeling. Pairing it with the musical comedy "Earth Girls Are Easy" was silly, but the idea of the furry, multicolored aliens coming to the rescue of the beleaguered Chinese family was very appealing.
7. "You must remember this, a kiss is still a kiss, a sigh is still a sigh, the fundamental things apply...if you're lost you can look and you will find me... If you fall I will catch you, I will be waiting..." What do these lyrics from two songs combine to create?

Answer: (As) Time After Time Goes By

"As Time Goes By" is perhaps best remembered as the song Ingrid Bergman asked Sam to play in "Casablanca." Since then it's been covered by artists as diverse as Frank Sinatra and ZZ Top.

Cyndi Pauper co-wrote and performed "Time After Time" on her first studio album. On that record, it was only surpassed in popularity by her "Girls Just Want to Have Fun."
8. Here's another song mash up. "Hey, where did we go, Days when the rains came? Down in the hollow, playing a new game...Tall and tan and young and lovely, (title) goes walking and when she passes, each one she passes goes, Aaah..." What is the new song's title?

Answer: Brown Eyed Girl from Ipanema

Van Morrison recorded "Brown Eyed Girl" in 1967 and captured the original hippie ethos of lighthearted playfulness before drugs and the Manson family changed the mood to something dark and dangerous. "The Girl from Ipanema" was released in the mid 1960s and sold very well internationally. The song was based on a 17 year old girl, Helo Pinheira, then living in Ipanema.
9. Here's a two book mash up that needs you to pick the right new title? Lyra Belaqua searches for her friend Roger, who has been carted off by the Gobblers. In her wanderings, she comes across a 1982 short story compilation by Ursula Le Guin that has several enlightening stories, among them "Schrödinger's Cat" and "The Eye Altering". Still, Lyra misses Roger.

Answer: The Golden Compass Rose

"The Golden Compass" is the first of Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy. In the UK this book is called "Northern Lights".

Ursula Le Guin has been writing about alternate worlds for many years. "Compass Rose" was a great introduction to her crisp, clear prose.
10. One last mashed up song - but what is it? "There's a lady who's sure, All that glitters is gold, Ooh baby, do you know what that's worth?"

Answer: Stairway to Heaven is a Place on Earth

Led Zeppelin released "Stairway to Heaven" in 1971. Various rock magazines have singled it out as one of the greatest rock songs ever. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant took the song from a slow ballad to hard rock.
Belinda Carlisle sang "Heaven is a Place on Earth" back in 1987.
