Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In her diary, an anonymous 15 year old girl tells of her introduction to drugs, sex and the Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat and White Rabbit. After many bad trips she is reunited with her family, whom she teaches to play croquet with flamingos and hedgehogs. Which mashed up two-book tale is this?

Answer: Go Ask Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

"Go Ask Alice" was originally introduced to the reading public as non-fiction, but psychologist Beatrice Sparks claimed shortly thereafter to be the editor of her patient's diary. Further down the road she listed herself as the author. Very murky indeed, and not a psychologist in whom I'd want to confide. "The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland" was written by eccentric Lewis Carroll.

There is much speculation these days about his murky feelings (yes, I do like that word) for the little girl who inspired the book, Alice Liddell. Whatever those feelings were, the literature that sprang from them remains fresh, fun and fabulous to this day.
2. In this mash up of two movies, Commander John Adams of Starship C-57D lands on the distant world Altair IV, despite being warned off by Dr. Morbius. Right after landing, the Starship and its crew are attacked by gorillas and orangutans who believe that they are really on Earth. A broken statue seems to confirm their world view. What new sci-fi movie is this?

Answer: The Forbidden Planet of the Apes

"The Forbidden Planet" is a groundbreaking 1956 riff on Shakespeare's "The Tempest". It was the first science fiction movie to have a mechanical man with personality: Robbie the Robot. It was also the first to show humans traveling at faster-than-light speeds.
"Planet of the Apes" has a screenplay that came, in part, from the great mind of Rod Serling who forecasts an end to civilization due to human nuclear folly. We have yet to disprove that theoretical end.
3. What new piece of literature is created by this book/poem mash up? Oh dear, Dorothy has been blown straight out of Kansas into a strange and antique land where she sees two vast and trunkless legs of stone. All she wants to do is go home but round the decay of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare, the lone and level sands stretch far away. Perhaps Glinda can get her back to Kansas.

Answer: The Wonderful Wizard of Ozymandias

Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and its many sequels entertained many generations of children from 1900 on. It inspired the 1939 musical film starring Judy Garland, Ray Bolted, comedian Bert Land and the magnificent Margaret Hamilton.
"Ozymandias" by Percy Bysshe Shelley is an unusually straightforward commentary on the impermanence of power - straightforward for Shelley that is. One of the great Romantic poets, he wrote longish works using older verbs like "hath" instead of "has". By contrast "Ozymandias" is crisply worded and has the virtue of brevity.
4. Rat, Mole and Badger try to extricate their amphibian friend from his disastrous exploits with varying degrees of success. The Finnish band Apocalyptica sang them a warning of a place the animals shouldn't go because madness reigns in the large open space of its ruler. What new story is told from this mash up of play and song?

Answer: Toad of Toad Hall of the Mountain King

"Toad of Toad Hall" is a 1929 play written by A.A. Milne, based on stories from Kenneth Grahame's "Wind in the Willows". It follows the madcap Mr. Toad through his obsessions with caravans and automobiles and ends with his friends saving Toad Hall from villainous stoats and weasels. The "Hall of the Mountain King" I'm referring to here was released in 2000 by Apocalyptica.

The refrain runs: "Madness reigns in the hall of the Mountain King, oh yeah, in the hall of the Mountain King." Simple but gets its point across.

The Mountain King appeared in Henrik Ibsen's "Peer Gynt" as a troll. Edvard Grieg composed a musical piece for act two of this play.
5. James and his buddy Artemus Gordon are on a mission to save President Ulysses S. Grant from the machinations of villains McGrath and Loveless. However, Josiah Bartlet appears from the future and explains to the duo how steampunk falls out of fashion and compares his post traumatic stress disorder to Artemus' funk over the steampunk news. James sighs and shoots him and the boys get on with their mission. What movie/TV mash up is this?

Answer: Wild Wild West Wing

Although "The Wild Wild West" was originally a television Western running from 1965 to 1969, I chose the motion picture version because there was no "The" in the title and it had one plot rather than episodes. "Wild Wild West", released in 1999, starred Will Smith as the decidedly cheeky James West and Kevin Kline as the erudite Artemus Gordon.

Josiah Bartlett is the fictional President of the United States in television's "West Wing" which explored episodically many issues faced in both his political and personal life, PTSD being but one of those issues.
6. Saleem is born at 12 a.m. on 8/15/1947. As he grows he discovers that all children in India who were born at that same time have special magical gifts. While Saleem's telepathy unites all these children, he also finds himself in contact with two children from the planet Arrakis. They are named Leto II and Ghanima and they are trying to sort out if they are abominations like their aunt. Luckily their grandma Jessica is coming to help, so Saleem can go back to work on the problems of post-colonial India.

Answer: Midnight's Children of Dune

Salman Rushdie's "Midnight's Children" is a work using magical realism to illuminate the hard and sometimes horrifying after effects of Britain returning independence to India. It does this through Saleem Sinai's recounting of his life in traditional oral fashion to his wife.

"Children of Dune" is Frank Herbert's third "Dune" series novel. Following "Dune Messiah", it tells how Paul Muad'Dib's two children struggle with their aunt Alia who is possessed by her evil ancestor Baron Harkonnen. They are afraid of becoming, like her, abominations. They also have issues with the Bene Gesserit and terraforming. This book develops naturally from its predecessors and is well worth reading if you haven't already.
7. A 32 year old London publicist who drools over her hunky but unreliable boss runs into a childhood friend and later overhears him telling his mum that she "smokes like a chimney, drinks like a fish and dresses like her mother." Determined to change her life, she flies to America and goes into training with Greg Heffley, new middle school student. Greg teaches her how to focus exclusively on video games and ridding the world of moldy cheese. After a day of this, Bridget is happy to return to her philandering boss and snarky former friend. Which books/movies mash up does this synopsis give us?

Answer: Bridget Jones's Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Both "Bridget Jones's Diary" and "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" were originally books and then movies. Renee Zellweger developed an impeccable British accent according to English movie critics. She also gained a little weight for her role as Bridget. Hugh Grant played her fast-and-loose boss. Colin Fifth was her very critical childhood pal, who eventually came to love her.

"Diary of a Wimpy Kid" is a coming of age book/movie which delivers good news to the angst ridden pre-teen: your outcast status, as your constant putting your foot in it, is only temporary. Others, notably Judy Blume, have delivered that message with greater force and better dialogue. Still, Roger Ebert gave it 3 and a half stars.
8. He whom the Shire calls Strider is ready for the final conflict with Mordor. Sam and his master struggle toward Mount Doom when they are met by Lionel Logue who teaches both them and George VI how to speak Orkish without coming a cropper. What is the name of this two movie mash up?

Answer: The Return of the King's Speech

"The Return of the King" is the third movie in Peter Jackson's trilogy (and J.R.R. Tolkien's book trilogy). The story of how Sauron's power and the ring were destroyed is packed with wars and heroics. Strider is revealed as the King and the Shire is damaged by bad hobbits but eventually restored.

"The King's Speech" has some historical bloopers but stuck to the mostly true story of how, with Lionel Logue's training, George VI overcame his stammer. Colin Firth played the King as a decent, well-meaning man who never desired the throne but had it thrust upon him. Geoffrey Rush is wonderful in one of his most likeable roles.
9. Here's the product of a two song mash up. What new song have we got? "But I set fire to the (connecting word) I watched it pour as I touched your face. (Connecting word) drops keep falling on my head But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turning red."

Answer: I Set Fire to the Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head

Adele won a Grammy in 2013 with "I Set Fire to the Rain." Hopeless but endless love is its theme. The woman can't get over her louse of an ex.

Burt Bacharach and Ham David wrote "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" back in 1969. It was the theme song for "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and won the Best Original Song Oscar.
10. J and K police aliens on earth but are dumbfounded by the intrusion of James "Whitey" Bulger into extraterrestrial wars. But, hey, there's money to be made, right? What new movie has been made by this mash up?

Answer: Men in Black Mass

1991 saw the release of "Men in Black", a hilarious coupling of straight-as-an-arrow K played by Tommy Lee Jones and crazy J played by Will Smith. The story follows them on their hunt for a giant cockroach alien who wishes to destroy an important world and cause galactic war.

"Black Mass" showed off Johnny Depp's mastery of a Boston accent in this 2015 biopic of nasty crime boss Whitey Bulger. His deals with the FBI were little more than insurance that his own illegal activities would not be prosecuted. Everyone involved was smeared by his manipulations.
