Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Don Adams starred in "Get Smart". Smart was a spy, but he didn't want his mother-in-law to know. What did he tell her about his job?

Answer: He sold greeting cards

After 86 married 99 (Barbara Feldon), 99's mother was curious about her son-in-law's job.
2. In "Stalag 17", where were secret messages often concealed?

Answer: In a chess piece

Billy Wilder's very fine film starred William Holden. (I don't want to kill the movie for you if you haven't seen it.) Peter Graves co-starred.
3. In "Fail Safe", Larry Hagman has a small role. What does he play?

Answer: Translator

Henry Fonda turns in another fine job as a U.S. President in a difficult Cold War situation. Hagman is his translator.
4. Who starred in the movie version of "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold"?

Answer: Richard Burton

Burton starred with Claire Bloom in the movie version of John Le Carre's novel.
5. In "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.", what was the name of Robert Vaughn's character?

Answer: Napoleon

Vaughn played Napoleon Solo; David McCallum played Ilya Kuriyakin. Leo G. Carroll played the boss.
6. In "I Spy", Robert Culp and Bill Cosby "covered" for their spy activities by involvement in what sport?

Answer: Tennis

Culp was the tennis player and Cosby was his trainer.
7. In "White Heat", James Cagney plays a gangster who spends time in prison. Who plays the undercover agent who poses as a convict to spy on him?

Answer: Edmond O'Brien

Cagney does his usual fine job as a gangster with some heavy duty emotional problems. Edmond O'Brien plays the man who infiltrates by posing as a convict.
8. In (the original) "Manchurian Candidate", Laurence Harvey is not exactly a spy, although he is working - unwittingly - for the "other side". What is the playing card that acts as a trigger?

Answer: Queen

I haven't seen the re-make, but the original with Frank Sinatra, Janet Leigh, Angela Lansbury and the under-appreciated Harvey was excellent. The Queen of Diamonds was the card that manipulated and controlled Harvey.
9. The movie "Five Fingers" dealt with a fact-based story of spying in World War II. Who was the star of the movie?

Answer: James Mason

This is definitely not one of those movies that is familiar to everyone. Mason was perfectly suited to be a gentleman's gentleman, played a valet to a British official.
10. The most famous spy of all is probably James Bond. Which sequence of films is correct (consecutive)?

Answer: 'Dr. No', 'From Russia With Love', 'Goldfinger'

It began with "Dr. No" (1962) with Ursula Andress. Later came "From Russia With Love" (1963) with Daniela Bianchi. "Goldfinger" (1964) followed with Shirley Eaton as the "golden girl". "Thunderball" was released in 1965.
