Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This play is best known for being presented in reverse chronology: the action in Act I happens after the action in Act II has already occurred(which happens after the action in Act III has already occurred).

Answer: Betrayal

By Harold Pinter. It doesn't work for me. "Exit" is a short play by Sartre, "Playboy" is a play by Synge, "Crucible" is by Arthur Miller.
2. This novel is distinctive for its use of two narrators: one narrates the first part and a second narrator takes over midway through the novel.

Answer: The Collector

Very unusual technique used by John Fowles. The first narrator is the predator; the second narrator is the victim. Interesting.
3. This World War II novel is distinctive in that it intersperses chapters with the viewpoint from the German side throughout the novel.

Answer: The Winds of War

Herman Wouk's very fine novel focuses on an American family, but periodically injects short chapters that are supposedly written to represent the German viewpoint. "18" is by Leon Uris, "Magus" is a fascinating novel by John Fowles, "Prize" is by Irving Wallace.
4. This play by Eugene O'Neill is unusual in that it utilized masks in a manner similar to that which was used in Ancient Greek drama.

Answer: The Great God Brown

All are plays by O'Neill.
5. The movie, "Dark Passage" was different in that the audience saw the world as the character saw it (as opposed to allowing the audience to see the character). Who was the movie's star?

Answer: Humphrey Bogart

With Lauren Bacall. Unusual - but it didn't work for me. (It was only done for about the first half of the movie.)
6. One method of telling a story is via stream-of-consciousness, as in the novel "How It Is". Who is the novel's author?

Answer: Samuel Beckett

If you like that sort of thing. (I don't.)
7. Another unusual method of telling a story is by using a narrator who is limited and somewhat "challenged". Which novel does this?

Answer: The Sound and The Fury

"A tale full of sound and fury, told by an idiot ..." "Home" is by Thomas Wolfe, "Ohio" is by Sherwood Anderson, "Death" is by James Agee.
8. A somewhat unusual movie technique was used when actors in a movie led lives that mirrored the lives of the characters that they portrayed. Which movie did this?

Answer: The French Lieutenant's Woman

Based on the John Fowles novel. With Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons. (I couldn't get through the book or the movie.) "Hawke" and "Morningstar" are based on Herman Wouk novels. "Strangers" was based on the novel by Evan Hunter.
9. Another play by Eugene O'Neill is unusual for its use of drums to create a certain mood. Which play is it?

Answer: The Emperor Jones

All are plays by O'Neill. ("Jones" is set on a native island; the drums help with mood and "atmosphere".)
10. Another unusual movie technique allows a character to look into the camera and speak directly to the audience. Which movie does this?

Answer: Goodfellas

Ray Liotta does this at the end of the movie. It's startling - and effective. Good movie. (I believe Kevin Costner had a similar moment in "JFK".)
