"Iron" Mike Dibiase was the adopted father of Ted Dibiase having married Ted's mother Helen Hild, who was herself a female competitor. In 1969 while wrestling Man Mountain Mike Dibiase was stricken with a massive coronary while in the ring and died at age 45.

Although the legendary Harley Race, who was at ringside, immediately began to administer CPR it did not help. Having failed to save Mike, Race immediately took young Ted, only fifteen, under his wing.
