Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first hand you are holding 8h, 9h and your opponent is holding Ah, Ad. The flop comes Kd, 10s, Qh. After the flop you cannot win the hand unless the turn and the river both improve your hand.

Answer: true

True. At this point in the hand you can win the hand only if you hit both the turn and the river. In poker terms you need to hit runner runner to win the hand. Any J would give you a straight but your opponent would have the nut straight (Broadway).
2. You are still holding 8h, 9h and your opponent has Ah, Ad. The flop came Kd, 10s, Qh. The turn is 7h. The board now reads Kd, 10s, Qh, 7h. How many outs do you have after the turn?

Answer: Eleven

Any of the remaining hearts (2,3,4,5,6,10,J,K) would give you a flush so that's eight outs. As noted in question one the three remaining J's will give you a straight but would give your opponent the nut straight so they don't count. Any of the remaining 6's would give you a straight so that is three more outs.

The 6h gives you the flush so it does not count towards your straight draw outs. Therefore your total number of outs is 11 (8+3). You would have a 25% chance to win the hand, up from a 6.67% chance on the flop. All odds calculations for this quiz were provided using http://www.cardplayer.com/poker_odds/texas_holdem
3. You are still holding 8h, 9h and your opponent has Ah, Ad. The board reads Kd, 10s, Qh, 7h. Which out of the choices below would give you the best opportunity to make the most chips off of your opponent?

Answer: Jh

The Jh would be the best card to catch on the river as it would give your opponent the Ace high straight (Broadway) but would give you a flush. Your flush is well camouflaged too because there was no apparent flush draw on the flop since it was a rainbow flop. Your opponent may be able to get away from the hand but it would be difficult.

Although either of the 6's would give you the winning hand, they would not improve your opponent's hand so it would be easier for them to fold. The 6c would be better than the 6h because the flush is more obvious with the 6h than the straight would be with the 6c.
4. You are still holding 8h, 9h and your opponent has Ah, Ad. The board reads Kd, 10s, Qh, 7h. On the river you hit one of you outs and win the hand. Your opponent says, "Man that hand sure was a _________." What term is used to describe a hand that looks good but actually ends up being a trap?

Answer: Cooler

A cooler is "a hand in poker in which a person with a very strong hand (often the 2nd best possible hand) is beaten by the best possible hand (usually a very rare full house, four of a kind, or straight flush). Many times the 2nd best hand is so strong that it is impossible to fold, usually resulting in the loss of a lot of money and sometimes, an existential crisis."
As stated on http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=cooler
5. In the second hand you are holding Kd, Ks and your opponent is holding 6d, 8d. The flop comes 5d, 7d, 6s. The turn comes 2d. How many outs do you have?

Answer: Five

Your opponent has already made his flush so you would need a fourth diamond on the board to give you a higher flush but that did not give your opponent a straight flush. Therefore you could catch the 3d, 10d, Jd, Qd, or Ad but not the 4d or 9d. Therefore you would have five outs. You would have an 11.36% chance of winning the hand after the turn.
6. In the third hand you are holding As, Js and your opponent is holding Ac, Kc. The flop comes Ad, 10s, Ks. How many outs do you have?

Answer: Twelve

You could catch any of the remaining spades (2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) for a flush. That is eight outs. You could catch the Qs for a royal flush. That is one out. You could also catch any of the other Q's for Broadway. That is three more outs. Thus your total number of outs is 12 (8+1+3). You would have a 42.73% chance to win the hand after the flop.

In most cases both players would get all of their money in after the flop no matter which of these hands they held.
7. In the fourth hand you are holding 9s, 9h and your opponent is holding Kc, Qc. The flop comes Tc, Jc, 9d. The turn is 2d. How many outs do you have?

Answer: Nine

Your opponent has flopped the nut straight with a flush draw and a straight flush draw. He is very strong. You will need to pair the board without picking up the final 9. Any of the remaining T's help (3), any of the remaining J's help (3), and any of the remaining 2's help (3).

The last remaining 9 would be deadly to you since it would give your opponent a straight flush and you four of a kind. Therefore you have nine outs (3+3+3) not ten. You would have a 20.45% chance to win the hand after the turn.
8. You are still holding 9s, 9h and your opponent is holding Kc, Qc. The board reads Tc, Jc, 9d, 2d. Of the choices below, which card would be the worst one to come on the river for you?

Answer: 9c

The 9c would be deadly to you since it would give your opponent a straight flush and you four of a kind. It would be a very hard hand to get away from and you would probably lose a substantial amount of chips. A hand like this actually happened at the WSOP Main Event in 2008 when one player had four Aces and the other player had a royal flush.
9. You are still holding 9s, 9h and your opponent is holding Kc, Qc. The board reads Tc, Jc, 9d, 2d. Of the choices below, which card would be the best one to come on the river for you?

Answer: 2c

The 2c would be the best card for you on the river because it would improve your opponents hand from the nut straight to the second nut flush but would give you a full house. It would be difficult for him to put you on a wired pair in the hole, although most good players are leery if the board is paired and they are holding a straight or flush. Still it has the potential to pay off nicely.
10. In the final hand you are holding Jd, 9d and your opponent is holding 4s, 4c. The flop comes Td, 8c, Kd. How many outs do you have?

Answer: 21

You have four to the flush so you have nine outs for the flush (13 diamonds - 4 showing = 9 left). You have an open ended straight draw (Jd, Td, 9d, 8c) so any Q or any 7 gives you the straight (four cards for each for a total of eight). But since you already considered the Qd and the 7d as flush outs you subtract those as duplicates from the straight outs leaving you with only six outs. You can also pair either of your hole cards so this gives you six more outs.

Therefore the total possible outs is 9(flush draws)+6(straight draws)+6(pair draws)=21.

Although you trail in the hand after the flop, your number of outs would make you a substantial favorite to win the hand. You would have a 71.72% chance to win the hand after the flop. Even if the turn did not improve your hand you would still have a 47.73% chance to win the hand.
