Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a horse's father called?

Answer: sire

Many times breeders will want to know who 'sired' a horse, meaning who was the father of the horse. A lot of the father's characteristics will be passed down to the foal.
2. Horses can sleep while lying down or standing up.

Answer: True

Horses are always worried about their safety and they have strong 'fight or flight' instincts. Horses also like to sleep in groups and generally won't lie down to sleep unless other horses are standing around them for protection.
3. Where would you find withers on a horse?

Answer: between the shoulders

The withers are just below the bottom of the horse's mane and are located in between the horse's shoulders. It is considered the 'tallest point' on a horse and is the starting point when measuring a horse.
4. What unit of measurement is used to measure the height of a horse?

Answer: hands

A horse is measured from the withers (between the shoulder blades) to the ground.
It used to just be equal to 'the size of a grown man's hand' but nowadays, one 'hand' is equal to 4 inches.
5. Horses are not bothered by loud noises or yelling.

Answer: False

Despite their size and strength, horses can be very easily frightened. When a horse becomes startled their first instinct is to run for safety. If you are in close quarters with a horse, like their stall, you should not yell, make quick movements, or linger behind them - all of these things can trigger a horse to have anxiety and want to escape for safety.
6. The different types of horse breeds are broken down into three different categories, based upon their personalities. Which of these is not one of breed categories?

Answer: Lukewarm bloods

A 'hot blooded' horse is energetic and fast, like Arabian and Thoroughbred horses. A 'cold blooded' horse is slow and used for hard work, such as pulling plows and carriages. Temperament of 'warm bloods' vary between hot and cold, since warm blooded horses are breeds that have a mixture of hot and cold blooded personality traits.
7. The rear 'rump' section of a horse is called a 'croup' and it connects to the horse's tail. What do you call the place where the tail connects to the croup?

Answer: dock

The dock is the the 'living' part of the tail because it has vertebrae, ligaments, and muscles; it is not just hair. The fetlock is the horse's ankle, the forelock is a part of the mane that falls between the horse's ears on their face, and the crest is where the mane grows on a horse's neck.
8. Should you stay away from a horse that is showing its teeth, has its ears pinned back to its head, and you can see the white portion of the horse's eyes?

Answer: Yes

Horses that have their ears pinned back tightly and that are showing their teeth are generally showing anger, aggression, or hostility. Horses also have very large eyes and rarely show any white in their eyes unless they are angry. These horses can bite or kick you, so you should not approach one if you see these signs.
9. What is it called when a horse rises up and stands on its hind legs?

Answer: Rearing

Some horses are trained to do this for competitions, performances, or circuses. However, if a horse is not trained to do this, rearing is considered very dangerous and disobedient. If you are riding a horse that does this, hold on very tight and be very careful.
10. What part of a horse can you examine to determine the horse's age?

Answer: teeth

A horse's teeth can be shaped in up to five different shapes. Like humans, horses have new teeth come in, or "erupt," as they get older. It is studying these eruptions that can determine a horse's age.
