Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of animal are penguins?

Answer: Birds

They are flightless birds. They actually spend 75% of their time underwater!
2. Penguins have a layer of fat underneath their skin called blubber.

Answer: True

They are covered with fluffy feathers, and then on top are outer feathers which overlap. This keeps in warmth. Penguins are black and white birds.
3. Penguins are able to survive by drinking salt water.

Answer: True

Some penguins don't live near fresh water, so it would be hard for them to use it as a drinking source all the time. Their bodies have a gland which takes out the salt, just like a water filter you may have. When possible, penguins do prefer to drink fresh water.
4. What is the place where the penguins mate and raise chicks called?

Answer: Rookery

Penguins "sing" to one another so that they recognise each other's voices! There are many different types of penguins - eg. Emperor penguins.
5. What animal is NOT a predator of penguins?

Answer: Cows

Penguins eat food like fish, krill and squid. They are camouflaged because they have a white stomach, which can blend into snow.
6. Which is NOT a type of penguin?

Answer: They all are

There are actually around 17 main types of penguin. Each of them are slightly different from the next. Some penguins have crests, while others do not.
7. All penguins live at the South Pole.

Answer: False

Some can live on the coast of South America, New Zealand, Africa and Australia. You have probably seen some at your local zoo!
8. Which one of these statements about penguins is incorrect?

Answer: Penguins can breathe underwater.

They have waterproof feathers, but they can't breathe underwater. Reptiles are snakes or lizards - not penguins!
9. What is the name for a group of penguins?

Answer: A colony

A herd could be: antelopes, bison, cattle, elk etc. A gang could be: turkeys, weasels, buffalo etc. A school could be: dolphins, fish, whales or porpoises.
10. Which penguin holds its eggs on its feet?

Answer: Emperor Penguin

The Emperor Penguin is bigger than any other living penguin, reaching up to 1.1m tall. Usually when a chick is first born the female gets the food and the male looks after the chick.
