Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the book, Artemis Fowl and Butler are in a city talking to a man named Nguyen. Which city is this?

Answer: Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon

In Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Artemis and Butler are receiving their mysterious answer to an internet query about fairies. Their customer, Nguyen, had told them about a strange healer, lurking in the shadows, who had a distinct craving for alcohol (rice wine is mentioned). Artemis was skeptical about this visit, due to the fact that they went on a wild goose chase in Cairo to answer their customer.
2. When Artemis gives the fairy a deadly dose of holy water, he offers her two vials for her Book of the Fairies. What are in these vials to be injected?

Answer: Water from Tara and a virus to feed on the alcohol and flush her system out

Artemis offered the water from Tara, the most magical place on earth, to counteract the holy water that he gave to her. The virus would eliminate her alcohol addiction, flush her system out, and allow her to rise out of her squalor to the fairy she once was. In addition to the virus, Artemis secretly included an amnesiac to make her forget about the whole deal.
3. Which language is the fairy language (Gnommish) most similar to?

Answer: Egyptian Hieroglyphs

Artemis had toiled on his computer for hours to be able to read the fairy language in the Book of Fairies. Even after he had discovered how the letters could be read, he needed to figure out how the language was organized on the page. He finally discovered that the language was read in spirals after experimenting with a number of different normal formats.
4. What color of hair does Holly have?

Answer: Auburn

Holly is described to be an elf a centimeter below the fairy average, with short, cropped auburn hair and a slim frame. She is a member of LEPrecon, the origin of the word leprechaun. LEPrecon stands for Lower Elements Police Reconnaissance.
5. What is the name of Butler's younger sister?

Answer: Juliet

Juliet is obsessed with all things wrestling. She's young, in her late teens, and takes after her older brother; she is a master of martial arts and combat. However, at her age, she's very temperamental and hasn't started bodyguard work yet, so she lives in the Fowl Manor.
6. Why has Artemis's mother, Angeline, gone insane?

Answer: Artemis's father has been missing for two years

Angeline went insane after Artemis Fowl Senior went missing. Ironically, he had gone missing after finally pursuing a non-criminal enterprise. She believes that creatures go after her in the dark, along her bed and into her ears. The second time Artemis sees her, she believes that he is her father.
7. What is Commander Root's first name?

Answer: Julius

Commander Julius Root, nicknamed "Beetroot" by his fellow officers due to his purple, angry complexion, is the commander in charge of the LEP. He often singles Holly out because of her cavalier attitude, but he's really a father to everyone he commands.
8. What kind of creature is Foaly?

Answer: Centaur

Foaly, master of technology for the LEP, is a half-horse, half-human. He is very sarcastic, especially to Commander Root, because he knows he is irreplaceable; his genius is what keeps the LEP's technology ahead of the human technology. Another of his traits is that he's very paranoid; he wears a tin foil hat at all times in order to deflect any brain wave interception the humans might throw at him.
9. What kind of airplane does Root go into to find Holly?

Answer: Root never goes into an airplane

Root never actually goes into an airplane; he goes into a whaler's boat to find Holly. Artemis had placed Holly's locator from her helmet into a makeshift bomb and lured the commander into a very old whaling boat. Inside, Artemis found where the captain was with a high-resolution camera, finding the breath crystals.

At this point in the book, one realizes how cruel Artemis can be, but also his distaste for inhumane crimes.
10. What is the Gnommish swear word used throughout the book?

Answer: D'Arvit

D'Arvit, a swear word written in phonetic Gnommish, is said to not have a need for translation, as it would be censored anyway. It leads one to think that it's a very bad swear word, considering that it's only used when the fairies are in imminent danger.
11. At some point in the book, does Briar Cudgeon ever become a full commander?

Answer: No

Cudgeon, who is well-connected with the council, becomes an Acting Commander for the Artemis Fowl ordeal. Eventually, however, once the Council found out that he had been using illegal mind-enhancing substances and that his idea to send a troll into Fowl Manor failed, he was demoted and lost all of his potential. In the second book, he plans to overthrow the LEP and the Council.
12. What did Artemis give Holly half of his hostage fund for?

Answer: To heal his mother's insanity

At this point in the book, one realizes how much Artemis cares for his family. It is said that his criminal ventures are to fund the search for his father; the entire hostage plan was in order to get to his father. Holly obliges not out of care for Artemis, but because she wants half of the gold back.
13. What did Artemis use to get out of the time-stop?

Answer: Sleeping pills in the champagne

Artemis found out that he could get out of the time-stop using states of consciousness. After realizing that one could not naturally fall asleep or wake up while in the time-stop, he used sleeping pills his mother had been using to force sleep upon everyone in the house, therefore getting them out of the time-stop and the field of the bio-bomb.

He used Santa Claus (San D'Klass) as an example, saying that powerful warlocks had cast giant time-stops over the land to keep people asleep while Santa delivered presents.
14. What day was it after the time-stop ordeal, ironically?

Answer: Christmas

Angeline, after having woken up and having lost her insanity, told Artemis that it was Christmas Day. Totally oblivious to the situation, she had asked Butler what the mess was from, and Artemis and Butler covered it up with a quick story. Even Artemis, a genius with intelligence and skepticism well beyond his age, felt like a young boy again.
15. Who is the supposed author of the book (or report, as they call it) as written in the epilogue?

Answer: Dr. J. Argon

While Eoin Colfer is the actual author of the book, the prologue and epilogue name the author to be Dr. Argon, as though it's a report on an interesting specimen. Dr. Argon is introduced in the middle of the book as a psychologist involved in picking apart Artemis's argument with Root.
