Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The answer to an addition problem is called a ______.

Answer: sum

When adding two or more numbers, you always finish with the sum.

For example: 1,234,567 + 3 = 1,234,570. The answer given here is the sum.
2. We move next to subtraction. What do we call the answer to an equation in subtraction?

Answer: difference

Again, you may use any number of digits in your subtraction equation and you will always finish with the difference.

For example: 1,234,567 - 3 = 1,234,564.
3. When we multiply numbers, what is the final answer called?

Answer: product

Here the going gets a little tougher. Multiplying tends to cause some people headaches, but one always finishes with the product of the numbers multiplied.

For example: 2 x 2 = 4.

But, then again....2 x 0 = 0 because ANYthing multiplied by 0 always has a product of 0. Even 1,234,567 x 0 = 0.
4. Now for the really hard stuff. What do we call the final answer in a division equation?

Answer: quotient

Talk about headaches! Division is quite likely the process that gives students the most trouble. However, one is always left with a number (or a number with a remainder) that is known as the quotient.

For example: 1,234,567 divided by 2 = 617,283 R 1.
5. Any portion of a whole number is known as a _________.

Answer: fraction

Ahhhh...fractions. A joy for millions of school kids over the years. Finding equivalent fractions, adding fractions, subtracting fractions...and on and on. The processes are limitless it seems. But in reality, fractions are our friends.

For example: Jimmy ate 1/3 of a pizza that was cut into 6 slices. How many slices did Jimmy eat? (Answer: 2) See, Jimmy? That fraction was your friend!
6. When we have some addends in a math problem, what process do we use to determine our answer?

Answer: addition

Here we are...back to adding. Perhaps the easiest of the processes in math equations. Addend + addend = sum.

For example: 1 + 1 = 2.
7. Now, when we have a minuend in a math problem, what process are we working with?

Answer: subtraction

A minuend - a subtrahend = a difference and so, subtraction is the process used.

For example: 100 - 1 = 99.
8. If a math problem includes a multiplicand, with which mathematical process are we working?

Answer: multiplication

Here we find that a multiplier x a multiplicand = a product.

For example: 40 x 5 = 200.
9. When we take a larger number and divide it by a smaller number we arrive at an answer. What is the smaller number called?

Answer: divisor

For division equations the correct placement of numbers is as follows:

dividend ÷ divisor = quotient.

For example: 802 ÷ 2 = 401.
10. What do we call the set of whole numbers by which any whole number may be divided?

Answer: factors

Factors are another of those difficult concepts for some students to learn. Factors are all of the numbers that evenly go into any other number.

For example: the factors of 20 are 1, 2, 4, 5, 10 and 20.

This is possible because: 1 x 20 = 20; 2 x 10 = 20 and 4 x 5 = 20.

Thanks for "figuring out" my math quiz. I hope you studied...there will be a test in the morning!
