Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am baking a traditional pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. Which item does NOT belong in my pie?

Answer: Peanuts

A traditional pumpkin pie has pumpkin, eggs, a little milk and sugar plus a few yummy spices. All of those are mixed and baked in a pie crust.
2. I am making quiche for our family brunch. What is the main ingredient in quiche?

Answer: Eggs

Quiche is basically an egg pie. You can add many tasty ingredients when you bake your quiche in a pie shell. My favorite recipe is a cheesy, onion, four-egg quiche.
3. I am gathering my ingredients for my famous Christmas cookies. What ingredient makes my cookies sweet?

Answer: Sugar

Although flour and eggs are ingredients for my cookies, sugar is the sweetener for my recipe. Mustard is not traditionally used in cookies.
4. I am grilling a pork loin for dinner. What meat is pork?

Answer: Pig

Pork means pig meat. Bacon, sausage, and ham are other tasty types of pork.
5. My son has requested a hot breakfast cereal today. Which one is not traditionally a hot breakfast cereal in the USA?

Answer: Cheerios

Cheerios are a dry breakfast cereal that is usually eaten with cold milk. Cream of wheat and oatmeal are hot cereals. Grits are a hot cereal also and are served for dinner too. I am from the southern US and my favorite hot cereal is grits with butter and a little sugar.
6. If someone at your table orders Eggs Benedict, how is the egg to be cooked?

Answer: Poached

Eggs Benedict is traditionally a poached egg served on an English muffin with Canadian bacon and hollandaise sauce.

It takes a little practice to poach eggs. You put water in a pan and bring it to a slight simmer. Crack your egg in a bowl but do not break the yolk. Once the water is hot, make a whirlpool in the water and tip your cracked egg into the whirlpool. Cook the egg for about 3 or 4 minutes until the egg white is set, then remove the egg from the water with a slotted spoon.
7. My husband just ordered a western omelette. What is the main ingredient for an omelette?

Answer: Eggs

Omelettes are made from eggs. A western omelette typically will have eggs, ham, green bell peppers and onions. It can be made with or without cheese.
8. One of my recipes mentions "root" vegetables. Which one is NOT a root vegetable?

Answer: Broccoli

For a vegetable to be called a root vegetable, it means the part of the vegetable we eat is grown underground. Broccoli is not a root vegetable. Broccoli is grown above-ground. We eat the flower of broccoli and a portion of the stem. Carrots, onions and potatoes are grown underground and are root vegetables.
9. I must take chicken and dumplings to church Sunday. What is a main ingredient for dumplings?

Answer: Flour

Dumplings are essentially dough balls that are made from flour and milk mixed together and placed onto boiling stew. Dumplings can be fluffy, like biscuits or balls of dough, or they can be rolled out like noodles. It really is a personal preference. I like fluffy dumplings best!
10. What is the main ingredient of hash browns?

Answer: Potatoes

Hash browns, or hashed browns, are made from potatoes. To make hash browns, you first julienne, shred or dice the potatoes then pan-fry them to a golden crisp. You will often see them cooked with diced onions, ham, peppers, or cheese. Actually, you can add just about anything to hash browns! In the US, hash browns are often served for breakfast.
