Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am a first former who desperately wants to please others and ends up becoming ill with flu.

Answer: Jane Teal

Jane Teal is a first former who acts as a fag for Angela (a kind of servant, a practice which occurred in real life boarding schools) and promises to do all her mending. However, this puts her into conflict with Mirabel, who expects Jane to turn out for lacrosse practice or be dropped from the team.

When Jane tells Angela she has to focus on games, Angela calls her a turncoat and says she'll replace her with Violet Hill. Jane is caught up between Angela and Mirabel and becomes stressed and ill, especially when Mirabel blames her for a false fire alarm, and decides to run away from school.

She falls asleep in a sports cupboard and Mam'zelle locks her in there by accident, mistaking her for a burglar. Miss Theobald discovers that Jane has flu. Antoinette later apologises to Jane over the fire alarm incident.
2. I used to be a musician, but am now Games Captain. I make myself unpopular with the younger kids for being too pushy.

Answer: Mirabel Unwin

In earlier 'St Clare's' books, Mirabel was a music enthusiast, but then changed to a games enthusiast and by 'Fifth Formers', has been made Games Captain with Gladys as her assistant. The power goes to her head, and it makes her very unpopular with both her own year group and younger students. Angela and Claudine in particular find her unbearable.

She calls a special games meeting and insists that other forms be there, even though it clashes with a dance, but the meeting is interrupted by a false fire alarm, and she is not allowed to reschedule. Mam'zelle locks her in a bathroom when she goes to investigate the second form's midnight feast, the night before a match.

The first and second formers deliberately miss practice, going on nature walks instead, and Gladys resigns. Mirabel does badly in her exams and learns her lesson after she makes up with Gladys.
3. I am not academic, but I am a good actress. I do animal impressions.

Answer: Doris Edward

Fifth formers have studies, and each study is shared by two girls. Doris, who regularly comes bottom of the class, shares her study with Pam Boardman, a shy academic girl and the 'brains of the form'. Mam'zelle calls her a 'great big stupid girl'. Although Doris is poor academically, she is good at acting and making people laugh with impressions.

When Mam'zelle sets the class a French poem about a farmyard to learn, Doris discovers that the only way she can memorise the poem is to act it out, complete with impressions of the animals.

When Mam'zelle calls upon her to recite the poem, she insists that she can only do it with the actions. Luckily, Mam'zelle sees the funny side of it, although the po-faced English teacher, Miss Willcox, does not.
4. I am fat because of a glandular problem. I steal other people's food from cupboards.

Answer: Alma Pudden

Alma Pudden is one of the most unpopular girls in the school. She is fat due to a glandular problem which causes her to be hungry all the time, and as a result, she steals food from the cupboards. The other girls nickname her 'Pudding', which she hates.

She shares a study with Pauline, who dislikes her because Alma's constant eating makes it hard to concentrate. Alma steals Claudine's food and Alison tells Claudine to hide the key, and Alma hides various things belonging to Alison in revenge. Mam'zelle locks her in a cupboard during the midnight feast, as she thinks Alma is a burglar. Alison discovers that Alma has been stealing from her when she catches Alma stealing her box of sweets.

She later fails her exams, and it is revealed that she was expelled from her last school, but Miss Theobald allows her to stay, in the hope that she will get medical help.
5. I have lots of sisters, one of whom is at St Clare's. I ring the fire bell during a games meeting.

Answer: Antoinette

Antoinette is Claudine's younger sister and Mam'zelle's niece. Like Claudine, she hates games and likes to play tricks. Angela gets Antoinette to fag for her out of spite, in the hope of making her do difficult tasks. However, it backfires when Antoinette plays a trick on Angela by cleaning her shoes with an expensive face cream and spreading shoe polish on her toast, which Angela and her friends mistake for anchovy paste.

She and Claudine plot to disrupt Mirabel's games meeting with a fake fire alarm, but Mirabel blames Jane Teal, and Claudine feels guilty and apologises to Miss Theobald on Antoinette's behalf, while Antoinette owns up to Jane.

She also throws water over Anne-Marie when Anne-Marie pretends to sleepwalk.
6. I am beautiful, blonde and popular, and I like playing younger girls off against each other.

Answer: Angela Favorleigh

Angela is beautiful and charismatic, and good at manipulating younger girls into wanting to do jobs for her. She shares her study with Alison. She clashes with Mirabel as Mirabel's obsession with games and loud voice get on her nerves. She manipulates Jane into doing her mending, but calls her a turncoat for wanting to focus on lacrosse and gets Violet Hill, who has a bit of a crush on her, to do her mending instead.

She tries to do the same with Antoinette to get at Claudine, and because Antoinette is talented at sewing, but it goes horribly wrong.

She ends up failing her exams, and stops bossing the younger ones around after Hilary calls her out on her behaviour.
7. I write angsty poetry and try to copy my English teacher's style. The other girls think I am talentless.

Answer: Anne-Marie Longden

Anne-Marie is one of the new girls, and a wannabe poet. She shares a study with Felicity. She writes depressing poetry that her parents love, but no-one else does - Bobby calls it 'tosh' - and sucks up to Miss Willcox, even wearing a massive brooch similar to one she wears. Miss Willcox is a failed poet herself, and is angry with Anne-Marie for ripping off a poem she wrote about an abandoned farm.

She eventually tells Anne-Marie that her poetry is awful and she should give up. Anne-Marie is jealous of Felicity, who is an actual genius, and tries to imitate her by pretending to sleepwalk, but is found out by Antoinette.

She decides to get her own back on Miss Willcox by submitting a Matthew Arnold poem and pretending she wrote it, and when Miss Willcox trashes the poem in front of the class, Anne-Marie takes pleasure in telling her she didn't write it.

After a talk to Miss Theobald, she decides not to write poetry until she feels she really has something to say.
8. I am a plain-spoken tomboy who loves to play pranks.

Answer: Bobby Ellis

Roberta 'Bobby' Ellis is the tomboy of the form and also a practical joker, along with her partner in crime, Janet Robins, with whom she shares a study. She has little time for Anne-Marie's pretentiousness and makes fun of her terrible poetry. She also calls Alison out on her obsession with Miss Willcox and aping the way she dresses, as she dislikes 'sloppiness'.

She and Carlotta call Alison and Anne-Marie 'Deirdre fans' (Miss Willcox calls herself Deirdre, but her real name is actually Doris).
9. I am a talented violinist with parents who put me under a lot of pressure. I also sleepwalk.

Answer: Felicity Ray

If you're a 'Chalet School' fan, you might remember Nina Rutherford, the genius pianist with poor social skills. Felicity is St Clare's equivalent, a genius violinist who takes no interest in anything other than her music. She shares a study with Anne-Marie, who is blatantly jealous of her. Felicity dislikes Anne-Marie's poetry and refuses to write music for it unless Anne-Marie can say something 'real'. Felicity is working towards a tough exam, and Miss Theobald is worried about her becoming lopsided and focusing on music to the detriment of everything else.

She gets kicked out of English class for singing a tune she composed. She later sleepwalks and plays air violin in her sleep. Mam'zelle catches her on the night of the feast, and Miss Theobald worries about her health.

A specialist confirms that Felicity is suffering from stress and that she should not take the exam until she is older, so she can focus on her schoolwork.
10. I am Pat and Isabel's cousin. I have a crush on my English teacher.

Answer: Alison O'Sullivan

Alison is a close friend of Angela, and shares her study. She is also the cousin of Pat and Isabel O'Sullivan, the main characters of the earlier books (though not so much in this one), who become joint head girls at the end of the book. She is scatty but kind-hearted and cares a lot what other people think of her. Throughout the series, she develops crushes on teachers, and in this book, she has a crush on Miss Willcox and copies her style, wearing lots of scarves and putting metal pins in her hair, which really annoys Bobby.

She and Anne-Marie compete with each other for Miss Willcox's attention. She blames Anne-Marie for stealing her things, but later finds out it was Alma when she, Pauline and Angela are in Alma's study and Alma walks in with Alison's sweets.

She makes up with Anne-Marie and apologises for wrongly accusing her.
