Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Jonah 1:1-2 the Bible tells us that God told Jonah to go to Nineveh. Jonah had other plans. Where did he head toward according to verse 3?

Answer: Tarshish

It says in Jonah 1:3 "But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD."

Tarshish was in the opposite direction of Nineveh. Jonah did not want to obey God because the people of Nineveh had done a lot of bad things and Jonah did not think they should be forgiven. As a result of his disobedience Jonah was swallowed by a big fish and lived in its belly for three days. Jonah teaches us that there are consequences for our sin. Sin is when we disobey God.

2. The prophet Nahum had some things to say regarding the city of Nineveh. In the 6th verse of the 2nd chapter of Nahum, how did he prophecy that Nineveh would be destroyed? (According to the King James Version)

Answer: The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be dissolved

Nearly all of Nahum's book of prophecy addresses the Babylonian city of Nineveh. The inhabitants were considered enemies of the ancient Israelites and were often very evil to them.

Nahum revealed God's words expressing his displeasure with them in this prophecy and later the city was destroyed, after Jonah went to them to get them to repent. They turned away from the evil things they were doing, but later resumed their sins, and God allowed the city walls to be destroyed by the flooding of a nearby river, and their enemies came in under the weakened outer walls and laid waste to the city.

3. Miriam was the sister of Moses, and she helped lead the Hebrews out of Egypt along with Moses. After the Hebrews had crossed the Red Sea and were on the other side, what did Miriam do?

Answer: She led the song of victory; the Song of Miriam

Miriam played an instrumental role in the life of Moses and of being a leader ever since she was a little girl. She was the one who watched over baby Moses floating in his basket until the Egyptian princess found him. After the Red Sea crossing, Miriam, along with all the other women of whom she was a leader to, sang the song of Miriam to celebrate the crossing.

Later in life, Miriam questioned the authority of her brother Moses, and God struck her with leprosy (which left her when she repented). In the end, Miriam died and right after she did, God sent a spring of water to the people. Miriam's story can be found in Exodus 2:1-10, Exodus 15:19-21, Numbers 12, and Numbers 20:1-2.

4. One of the strangest prophets in the Bible was Ezekiel. One day while he was talking to the Lord, a hand appeared with a scroll in it, and the scroll was written on both sides. What was Ezekiel told to do with it?

Answer: To eat it.

Ezekiel was among the children of Israel who were captives of the Chaldeans when the Lord first appeared to him. While he was talking to the Lord the hand with the scroll appeared to him out of thin air and the scroll was written upon on both sides, that is on both the front and back sides. He had to eat this scroll then go to the children of Israel and speak the words of the Lord to them. You can read about it in Ezekiel Chapter 2:9 to Chapter 3:4.

5. In Daniel Chapter 5 King Belshazzar asked Daniel to come and explain something very strange that had happened at the banquet which the king was giving. What was the strange thing that had happened?

Answer: Some writing appeared on the wall

King Belshazzar was very worried when a hand suddenly appeared and started writing on the wall of the banquet hall. None of his wise men could read or understand it, but the queen remembered that Daniel was a very wise man who had helped the king's father. When Daniel arrived he was able to read and explain what the message meant. It said that the king hadn't been doing a good job, that his reign was about to end and that his kingdom would be divided up and ruled by other countries. In spite of this bad news King Belshazzar still rewarded Daniel for explaining the strange writing to him.

6. One of the prophets in the Old Testament once stated that he was not a typical prophet nor even the son of a prophet, yet God had asked him to prophesy anyway. Who was this prophet, who said that he was merely a herdsman and a gatherer of sycamore figs?

Answer: Amos

In Amos 7:14-15 Amos explained to a priest named Amaziah that he "was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit: And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel."

Perhaps this shows us that anyone can do the will of God, regardless of their position in life, if they are willing to be obedient to Him.

7. God loved his people the Israelites, but they were very unfaithful to Him and worshiped idols of other nations. God told Hosea to marry an unfaithful wife to show how He loved Israel in spite of her mistakes. What did the prophet Hosea do when his wife ran away and became a slave?

Answer: He paid the price for her, forgave her, and restored her as his wife.

Hosea understood how God felt when his wife ran away after he had given her everything. He raised their children while his wife was away and did everything he could to bring her back. She would come back and run away again. Then the day he saw his wife being sold as a slave, Hosea paid the highest price for her and brought her back. He loved her and treated her just as he had before. He forgave her and they had a new life. His wife never ran away again. God told Hosea He would do the same for Israel. God wanted Israel to know He loved them even when they didn't love Him back. Eventually God paid the ultimate price of the cross so that the Israelites and the world could be saved. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son, so that whosoever believeth on Him shall be saved." (John 3:16)

8. Deborah was the only female judge mentioned in the Bible. She acted as a prophetess for her people the Israelites and when they were being threatened by the might of the Canaanites, she sent a military man to lead a fight against them. Who was this man?

Answer: Barak

Deborah was a judge of Israel. This meant that she provided her people with guidance, advice, a means of peaceful solutions, and, in times of war or when otherwise dealing with a threat, a person to rally everyone together. At the time, the Israelites were being threatened by King Jabin of Canaan. Deborah summoned Barak, a military leader to lead an armed force against Jabin's general Sisera. Barak knew that the Israelite militia was almost no match for the Canaanites but Deborah's faith inspired him. As it turned out the Israelites won. You can read Deborah's story in Judges 4 and 5 KJV.

9. Sometimes God had to use difficult things to get His people's attention! The prophet Joel prophesied during such a time. What creatures had caused a severe famine in the land, by eating all the crops and food?

Answer: locusts

Locusts are a really big member of the grasshopper family! Joel told the people to wake up and cry because what the big locusts had not eaten, the smaller locusts had eaten. There was basically nothing left for crops or food. It was so bad, no-one could remember anything like it for several generations. (Joel 1:4) Joel told them this was because they were not serving God. They need to repent and tell God they would change. However Joel also told them if they turned to God, God would restore everything that had been lost. God took pity on his people and told them in Joel 2:19, "I am sending you grain, new wine and olive oil, enough to satisfy you fully; never again will I make you an object of scorn to the nations." God also told them He would pour out His spirit, blessing their sons and their daughters with visions and prophesies.

10. This prophet was dedicated to bringing God back to Israel after King Ahab and Queen Jezebel had forced the people to worship Baal. His name meant "The Lord is my God". Who was he?

Answer: Elijah

Elijah was a prophet in the book of Kings. When King Ahab married Queen Jezebel, she ordered temples to her god Baal built throughout Israel and all of God's prophets put to death. Elijah survived and confronted the king and queen - a brave act considering how angry Jezebel was. He proved that the power of God was stronger than that of Baal. Eventually, instead of dying a natural death, Elijah was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind, leaving Elisha behind as the prophet for Israel. Elijah had trained and worked with Elisha and thus left him in place.
