Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Those things falling from that beech tree might STUN you if they land on your head.

Answer: nuts

Many trees grow a hard shell around their seeds before they drop to the ground. Those seeds are what we call nuts. Beech nuts are very tasty but they're small. They probably won't hurt if they bonk you on the head.
2. Don't have a lot of ANGST about swatting those little black bugs. They're very annoying!

Answer: gnats

Gnats are small flies that look kind of like mosquitoes. They may be small but they can give an itchy bite and they like being in the woods.
3. It is SOFTER walking in this woodland, which is quite large.

Answer: forest

The words woods, woodland and forest mean pretty much the same thing but forest usually means a woodland that covers a lot of area. Winnie-the-Pooh's hundred-acre wood probably wouldn't qualify as a full-fledged forest.
4. That big tree over there should give AMPLE shade.

Answer: maple

Maples are large trees that can get to be 60 feet/18 meters tall. They grow in areas that get snowy winters and their leaves turn red, yellow or orange in the autumn.
5. Why did you bring those FILES on our walk? You should have brought a swatter for those bugs over there.

Answer: flies

Flies are found everywhere. The little insects eat lots of things like fruits and fungi, but if you walk near them they don't mind landing on you for a look!
6. Psst! Look at that brown animal trying to hide from us behind a REED. We can still see her.

Answer: deer

Deer are one of the larger animals you'll see in the woods. There are several types throughout the world from white-tailed deer to elks and reindeer.
7. Let's SNEAK past that thing slithering along the ground. What do you suppose it is?

Answer: snake

Snakes make their homes in the woods, in rocks, fields or the desert. They seem to be easy to please. Most won't hurt you if you leave them alone, but they may surprise you when you're not expecting to see them.
8. I just RACED around that nice-smelling tree over there. Some people like to use its wood to make closets.

Answer: cedar

Cedar trees are evergreen with flat-needled branches. Their wood is very fragrant and people sometimes use it to line closets or clothes chests because moths don't like the smell of it.
9. You need to MASTER the art of jumping from stone to stone to get across that little waterway.

Answer: stream

Streams are little brooks and creeks, smaller than a river. You may find several as you walk through the woods.
10. Uh oh, what is that howling? I don't know if those are words or just VOWELS. What kind of animals might they be?

Answer: wolves

Wolves howl to let other members of their pack know where they are, and maybe to let other wolves know to stay away from their territory. There are many types of wolves that live in the Arctic, in woodlands and in the deserts. They might look scary but if you leave them alone they are likely to do the same for you.
