Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the Romney Marsh quartet never rode with the White Riders in full regalia?

Answer: Roger.

During the fight to save the castle from being turned into a holiday camp, Tamzin and her friends resurrected the old tale of the ghostly White Riders. This involved painting Cascade and Siani and two lookering ponies with phosphorescent paint, and dressing up in white sheets themselves. Roger missed out on the fun because he was unable to get to the castle during term time.

However, he did get to ride on the final victory run. This time, they didn't paint the ponies.
2. How did Meryon lose part of his memory in "Hidden in a Dream"?

Answer: He fell while running for help after he saw someone else in quicksand.

When Meryon woke up after the accident, he had concussion and had to recover at the vicarage. The missing part of his memory bothered him, because subconsciously he thought he was to blame for someone's death.
3. Tamzin, Rissa, Roger and Meryon live in which of these places? The place names should be in the same order as the people who live there.

Answer: Westling, Dunsford, Hastings and Winklesea.

All these places really exist, but only Hastings wears its real name in the books. Westling is really called Rye Harbour, Dunsford is really Rye, and Winklesea is really Winchelsea.
4. In "No Entry", Castle Farm is in a state of siege. This is because -

Answer: The livestock are clear of foot and mouth disease.

Foot and mouth disease is a terrible disease for farmers, because if one animal in a flock or herd catches it, all the cloven-hoofed animals on that farm must be put down. Farmer Merrow was determined to keep his livestock safe, so he put the farm under siege. Anyone coming in from outside had to bathe in disinfectant.
5. What is the name of the retired hearse both Jim and Meryon sometimes drive in later books in the series?

Answer: Emma

Jim acquires the Emma for use in his undertaking business, but she is often used for less reputable doings. Jim is not a good driver, and in the end he hands the Emma over to Meryon.
6. Tamzin is not the only girl interested in Meryon. Who of the following also harbours romantic feelings about him?

Answer: Andrea Thornton.

Andrea is about the same age as Meryon and is attracted to him in the Punchbowl Farm/Romney Marsh cross-over book "The Outsider". Rissa Birnie also confesses to having a "thing" for him in "The Hoodwinkers". Lesley and Lindsey never show any particular signs of interest, and Maria is the much older, and married, housekeeper at Punchbowl Farm.
7. When Tamzin and Rissa first encounter him, Meryon is doing something unusual. He is -

Answer: Walking on his hands.

Meryon is quite acrobatic, and often stands or walks on his hands in the early books. He first meets Rissa and Tamzin during "The Midnight Horse". He does also eat porridge while blindfolded, but this is in "Hidden in a Dream", a later book.
8. What acrobatic feat does Lesley Frampton claim she can perform?

Answer: Stand on her fingers.

Lesley, now recovered from her paralysis, says she can stand on her fingers. Meryon is most impressed, until she shows him exactly how she does it!
9. By what name was Joseph Merrow known when Tamzin first met him?

Answer: Jonah.

Joseph was working for the men on the slaughter ship in the book "Cargo of Horses". These men treated him badly, and called him "Jonah" because they said he brought bad luck. Later, he was adopted by the Merrows and his name was changed to "Joseph".
10. Which of the following does Tamzin not rescue in the books?

Answer: A neglected puppy.

Tamzin was a great one for rescuing the helpless, and among those she helped were the pony, Banner (in "The Midnight Horse"), the dolphin Simo (in "Dolphin Summer") and various seabirds in "Operation Seabird". She also defended a pair of hoopoes in "Strangers to the Marsh" and fallow deer in "Punchbowl Midnight", and of course the horses from the slaughter ship in "Cargo of Horses".
