Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Whom had the children and the Drews family come to visit for their summer holiday?

Answer: Great-Uncle Merry

Great-Uncle Merry wasn't actually the uncle of anyone in the family. He was just a long-time friend of Mrs Drews' family. The children affectionally called him "Gumery."
2. Where was the village of Trewissick located?

Answer: Cornwall, England

Cornwall is known as the "land of the west" from King Arthur days. The setting provides a backdrop for Simon, Jane, and Barney's search for the grail.
3. What did the children see in the harbor the day they arrived that caused a strange reaction from Gumerry?

Answer: a large, white yacht

Jane described Great-Uncle Merry's reaction as the closest thing to seeing him scared ever. Seeing the yacht foreshadowed the coming of the "Dark."
4. Where was the door to the mysterious attic found?

Answer: In the boys' room behind the wardrobe.

This is similar to C. S. Lewis's "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe."
5. Who did Jane visit to ask about the guide book she found in the captain's trunk?

Answer: Mr Hastings (the Vicar)

Jane goes to visit the vicar--who later turns out to be the leader of the Dark.
6. According to the manuscript, what were the kids going to be searching for?

Answer: a grail

The grail was fashioned from the Holy Grail, but this grail contained information and secrets of King Arthur's victories.
7. Who does Jane say was the dark figure that came after Simon and her at the headstones?

Answer: The Vicar

Jane reveals that the dark figure is the man she went to see about the guide book. Simon says that he had been chased by him, along with the boy Bill, the day before.
8. How are the kids eventually able to reach the entrance of the cave?

Answer: The spring tide was exceptionally low and they were able to walk to it

Mr Penhallow had told Jane and Simon that the spring tide would cause the water level to be lower than normal on the day of the carnival. After Barney escaped from Mr Hastings and the Withers, the kids had to sneak to the cave entrance because they were being watched.
9. What happened to the manuscript when Simon tossed it to Great-Uncle Merry?

Answer: It was hit with an oar and fell into the ocean.

Now that the manuscript had been successfully used to find the grail, it needed to be kept out of the hands of the "Dark" so it could not be used for evil.
10. What does Barney determine "Merriman Lyon" stands for?

Answer: Merlin

Barney puts two and two together and comes up with the idea that "Merriman Lyon" is his mysterious Great-Uncle's pseudonym.
