Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dragons are famous for their ability to breathe fire. How do they produce the fire?

Answer: By burning their venom

Dragons have fangs and venom glands, similar to those found in snakes. They also have a special pouch in the lower jaw where they keep pieces of flint. Jiggling the flint produces the spark needed to ignite the venom.

However, not all dragons are fire-breathers. For example, rather than breathing fire, Frost Dragons breathe ice.
2. What name is given to a dragon's flight muscle?

Answer: Latissimus dorsi

The Latissimus dorsi are a dragon's largest muscles and are attached to the base of each wing. These muscles help the dragon gain enough force to be able to fly.

Pectoralis major - Chest muscles
Deltoid - Shoulder muscles
Gluteus minimus - In more simple words this is a dragon's backside.
3. All dragon eggs have to be kept warm before they hatch.

Answer: False

If you're raising baby Frost Dragons the most important thing to remember is that their eggs must be kept as cold as possible.
4. At what age would a dragon start learning to fly?

Answer: 4 years old

At the age of three, a dragon will begin to show the first signs of hoarding behaviour. They will also start learning to produce fire. It's not until the age of four that most dragons will attempt to fly.
5. Which of the following gemstones would you be likely to find in a dragon's lair?

Answer: Amethyst

Besides amethysts, other gemstones you'd be likely to find include diamonds, emeralds and rubies.
6. Some dragons have feathers.

Answer: True

While most dragons have scales, some, such as the Asian Lung and the Mexican Amphithere have colourful feathers on their heads and tails.

The Asian Lung can be found in Chinese mythology while the Mexican Amphithere features in American mythology.
7. Dinosaur bones were once mistaken for being the bones of dragons.

Answer: True

When the first dinosaur bones were found in China, people were convinced that they were dragon bones.
8. What's the average wingspan of an adult European Dragon?

Answer: 12 metres

Pegasus: 6 metre wingspan
Adult Thunderbird: 8 metre wingspan
Adult European Dragon: 12 metre wingspan
Adult Roc: 30 metre wingspan

For anyone who isn't familiar with them, the Roc and the Thunderbird are enormous birds, similar to eagles and vultures.

European dragons are found in various mythological stories throughout different cultures in Europe.
9. What's the most popular use for dragon skin?

Answer: Clothing

Dragon skin can be used to make gloves, jackets, fancy-dress costumes and flame-proof shields.
10. In the case of dragon breeding, what colour would a baby dragon be if its mother was green and its father was gold?

Answer: Bronze

This doesn't happen very often as female dragons tend to choose males who are the same colour as themselves.
