Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Greenhouses are used to help plants grow, generally in which season?

Answer: Winter

Yes, they're meant for providing a warm space for plants in general to grow when it's too cold for them outside, like in winter. They're designed to draw light from the sun inside and keep heat energy in.
2. Greenhouses commonly use mesh to trap heat inside for helping the plants grow.

Answer: False

I don't remember anyone ever using mesh for it! No, rather they use glass or plastic. Not necessarily green, mind you. They're called greenhouses because they help plants grow, and the stereotypical plant is green.
3. There is only one gas that causes the greenhouse effect.

Answer: False

The properties of the atmosphere (water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane, etc.) all contribute to the greenhouse effect, so there's more than just one gas causing it.
4. Without the greenhouse effect, what would the average temperature on Earth be?

Answer: Below 0 degrees Celsius.

This is because we need the greenhouse gases to trap the heat inside to keep us warm, just like a normal greenhouse keeps traps heat inside to keep plants warm. The major greenhouse gases are water vapour, carbon dioxide and methane (as mentioned earlier in this quiz).
5. Which of these does not promote the greenhouse effect?

Answer: They all do.

Here's the logic. First, evaporation. When water evaporates, it goes from a liquid to a gas, namely water vapour, which is one of the greenhouse gases. Next is deforestation. When a tree is cut down and burned (the process of deforestation), it becomes carbon dioxide, also a greenhouse gas.

Not to mention that when a tree is taken down, there are less trees to suck up the carbon dioxide, meaning there's more of the gas in the air. Finally, is the "opening a can filled with nitrous oxide into the atmosphere" option. Nitrous oxide is also a greenhouse gas. So, even though the scenario seems awkward, that would indeed promote the greenhouse effect, just like the other two.
6. Which rays does the Earth release after turning the rays from the sun into heat energy?

Answer: Infrared rays

When sunrays reach the Earth, the Earth's surface is warmed up and gives off its own rays, this time in the form of heat energy. The infrared rays escape into space, but some of them are reflected back to Earth by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
7. When the greenhouse effect becomes stronger, more and more heat will be trapped on the Earth, increasing the average temperature here. What is this called?

Answer: Global warming

Antarctica has had chunks of ice break off it before. Some scientists think global warming has caused this. So, now you know what it does, and can do, try to make sure there are enough trees to suck up all that extra carbon dioxide, and stop running through the gardens at school, kids!
8. What's the name of the lower atmosphere that contains the greenhouse gases?

Answer: Troposphere

This troposphere, which is about ten kilometres thick, also contains oxygen for us to breathe in addition to the greenhouse gases.
9. The greenhouse effect and ozone depletion are not the same.

Answer: True

In a nutshell...
Greenhouse effect: Several gases trapping heat inside the Earth.
Ozone depletion: Gases rising to the ozone layer and damaging it, causing holes.
So, they're not the same.
10. Which of these is NOT a greenhouse gas?

Answer: Carbon monoxide

Carbon monoxide is a gas that can REALLY mess up your lungs that you find coming out of a car's exhaust pipe and is also in cigarettes. From what I can see, it's pretty much all bad, but it doesn't act as a greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. Carbon monoxide can also turn into plain old carbon dioxide if it attaches to another oxygen atom, which it tends to do as quickly as possible.

This is because carbon monoxide is one part carbon and one part oxygen (CO), while carbon dioxide is one part carbon and two parts oxygen (CO2).
