Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first episode, imaginatively titled "Friendship Is Magic - Part 1", introduces us to the main character of the series, Twilight Sparkle. While walking through the castle courtyard, she runs into another pony, who invites her to a get-together being held by whom?

Answer: Moondancer

Twilight declines, as she would much rather read books than socialize. She soon receives a letter from Princess Celestia informing her of her forced relocation to Ponyville, where she is told she must make new friends.

This episode mainly serves to introduce us to the other five main characters, who will soon become Twilight's best friends: Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Fluttershy, and Pinkie Pie. We also meet Spike, a baby dragon who serves as Twilight's assistant at the library in Ponyville where both of them work and live. At the end, however, a villain named Nightmare Moon introduces herself and reveals her plot to spread eternal night over the entire kingdom of Equestria.

Dun dun dun!
2. In the thrilling follow-up to "Friendship Is Magic - Part 1", "Friendship Is Magic - Part 2", the Mane Six set out to find the Elements of Harmony, rumored to be the only things that can stop Nightmare Moon. At one point, they are forced to cross a raging river inhabited by a sea serpent. What is his name?

Answer: Steven

Steven Magnet is an extremely effeminate river serpent (or sea serpent, depending on who you ask) whose wailing and thrashing turns the normally calm river into a torrent. His unhappiness stems from his mussed-up mustache, which had the right half torn off by Nightmare Moon in an attempt to hinder the ponies' progress. Fortunately, Rarity cuts off her tail and grafts it to Steven's face, making him so happy that he allows the ponies to use him as a bridge to cross the river.

Steven Magnet's name stems from an error in the captions of a video of this episode that was uploaded to YouTube. While the fans called him this since the beginning, his name was not made official until "The Elements of Harmony: My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: The Official Guidebook" was released in June 2013.
3. In "The Ticket Master", Princess Celestia sends Twilight an extra ticket to the Grand Galloping Gala, the most amazing party of the year. Naturally, all of her friends want to go, so how does she decide who to take with her?

Answer: She doesn't

Because they're all her best friends, she can't possibly decide between them, so she sends the tickets back to Princess Celestia, telling her of the dilemma she faces. Of course, after hearing this, the princess has no problem sending Twilight six tickets, one for her and each of her friends (plus one for Spike).

Twilight's friends did try to give her gifts, but she refused to base her decision on them.

The "watching paint dry" contest is held in Season 3's "Too Many Pinkie Pies", and it is used to distinguish the real Pinkie Pie from her many copies.

Thinking of a number between one and ten would be just silly.
4. "Applebuck Season" shows Applejack attempting to harvest the entirety of Sweet Apple Acres by herself. Normally, her brother, Big Macintosh, would help her, but he has an injury preventing this. Where is he hurt?

Answer: His torso

Though his injury is not explained, some people like to believe that it originated from a throwaway gag in the previous episode, in which Applejack bet Big Mac that she could get all of the day's apple harvest in the barn by lunchtime. If she won, he would have to walk through town wearing one of Granny Smith's girdles. Evidently, he lost.

"Applebuck Season" is the first episode to focus on just one of the ponies, a trend that continues throughout the entire series. Unfortunately, it's Applejack's only episode for a good long time, as she doesn't get another one until Episode 8 of Season 3, "Apple Family Reunion". This displeased many of her fans, however, as both episodes focus on her weaknesses, and she has yet to have one that highlights her strengths.
5. Episode 5, titled "Griffon the Brush-Off", starts off with Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie bonding over a common interest: pranking. The two of them have a rollicking good time pranking all of their friends...except one. Who?

Answer: Fluttershy

Dash and Pinkie replace Twilight's ink with invisible ink, give Rarity a bouquet laced with sneezing powder, and paint Applejack's apples with strange designs and fluorescent colors. Rainbow Dash wants to squirt Fluttershy with a fake turtle, but Pinkie Pie refuses to prank her because Fluttershy is too sensitive for "even [their] most harmless prank".

One of Rainbow Dash's old friends from flight camp, a griffon named Gilda, shows up and attempts to monopolize Rainbow Dash's time, taking an instant dislike to Pinkie Pie and trying to drive a wedge between the two friends. Eventually, Dash realizes what a jerk Gilda is being and tells her to leave, apologizing to Pinkie for not realizing it earlier.
6. In "Boast Busters", Spike mentions that Twilight knows 25 different types of spells, and the number is always increasing. What is spell number 25?

Answer: Growing magic

At the very beginning of the episode, Twilight is testing spell number 25 on Spike. She gives him a thick, bushy mustache, but makes it disappear just as quickly once Spike says he plans to use it to impress his crush, Rarity.

"Boast Busters" introduces another fan favorite, Trixie, or, as she prefers to be known, The Great and Powerful Trixie. Her specialty is illusions, primarily because she is very weak in all other areas of magic. She is a relentless and inflammatory braggart, making fun of other ponies' abilities even though she herself has never done any of the things she brags about doing. This becomes readily apparent by the end of the episode when her two biggest fans, Snips and Snails, bring an Ursa Major (an enormous bear made of stars) to Ponyville in an attempt to get her to prove that her stories are true. Unfortunately, they're not, and Twilight has to step in to save the day. Twilight also demonstrates spell number 25 again at the end of the episode by giving Snips, Snails, and Spike all mustaches. It's not really clear why, but she does.

Wind magic is spell number 16. Levitation magic is not given a number (that we know of), but it is a basic spell that all unicorns use in one capacity or another.
7. In "Dragonshy", Pinkie Pie beats Rarity at 35 straight games of what?

Answer: Tic-tac-toe

In "Dragonshy", the Mane Six must climb a mountain and evict the dragon who is currently taking a nap in a cave at the top. His snoring is producing a lot of smoke, and since dragons' naps last for a hundred years, the smoke will eventually cover all of Equestria if left unchecked. While Fluttershy is the pony who is most afraid of dragons, she is the one who ends up convincing the dragon to leave after he knocks her friends for a loop.

Pinkie Pie and Rarity play tic-tac-toe while waiting for Applejack to drag Fluttershy on a low path around the mountain, as Fluttershy becomes so scared by the dragon's snoring at the journey's onset that her legs and wings lock up and she can no longer move. I have no idea how they would play rock, paper, scissors with hooves, but I'm sure Pinkie could find a way.
8. Twilight decides to hold her first slumber party in "Look Before You Sleep". Which two ponies does she invite to it?

Answer: Rarity and Applejack

Rarity and Applejack are none too happy about being forced to spend an entire night in the same house after a dispute about how best to clear branches from trees in preparation for the oncoming storm. They also frequently disagree on the other's ways of life; for instance, Rarity is very fashion-conscious, while Applejack hates all things frilly. Rarity dislikes getting dirty, while Applejack revels in it. By the end, though, they both learn that the other's methods can actually be useful when they help each other clear out a tree that fell into Twilight's house.

Twilight would NEVER invite the princesses for a sleepover, as she'd be far too nervous even to ask. As for everypony else, we have no idea what they're doing in this episode. Perhaps they're having their own sleepovers.
9. In "Bridle Gossip", everypony fears the zebra Zecora, who lives in the deepest, darkest part of the Everfree Forest. They all believe her to be an evil enchantress who does evil dances and who mixes potions for her own devious ends. In reality, though, is Zecora evil?

Answer: No

To show she's not afraid of Zecora, Applejack's little sister, Apple Bloom, follows Zecora back to her house. Once Applejack realizes she's missing, however, she immediately suspects foul play. Hoping to dispel the nasty rumors surrounding Zecora, Twilight leads the Mane Six into the Everfree Forest. Once they find Apple Bloom unharmed, Zecora gives them a warning that they (of course) completely ignore, believing it to be the evil ramblings of a witch.

The next day, the ponies all wake up to find themselves wracked with mysterious ailments. Convinced this is one of Zecora's nefarious plots, the Mane Six set back into the forest to find her and accuse her of wrongdoing. After breaking into her house, destroying most of her possessions, and causing general mayhem, Apple Bloom shows up and explains that Zecora's potion is actually a cure for Poison Joke, a strange blue flower that, upon contact, causes amusing inconveniences instead of a rash. As this is what was causing the Mane Six their problems, they take a trip to the spa and bathe in Zecora's curing potion, after which they all apologize to her for their misconceptions.
10. While a solid episode on its own, "Swarm of the Century" is also full of pop cultural references. Which of these movies is NOT alluded to at some point in this episode?

Answer: The Big Lebowski

The plot of "Swarm of the Century" features creatures called parasprites, who reproduce after eating (like the title creatures in "Gremlins") and who multiply incredibly quickly, creating a huge nuisance by rapidly filling up any available space (like the title creatures in the "Star Trek" episode "The Trouble with Tribbles"). Eventually, Pinkie Pie, whom everypony has been ignoring for the entire episode because her theory to get rid of the parasprites sounds so outlandish, leads the parasprites out of town and into the Everfree Forest Pied-Piper-style with a one-pony polka band.

While the parasprites are devouring Ponyville, Twilight briefly snaps and suggests that they build an exact copy of Ponyville right next to the real town, referencing a similar plan used in "Blazing Saddles" to distract the villains.

Surprisingly, "The Big Lebowski" IS referenced in an episode of "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic", just not this one. In Episode 6 of Season 2, "The Cutie Pox", the Cutie Mark Crusaders (Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, and Rarity's little sister, Sweetie Belle) start the episode in a bowling alley, where you can see ponies who closely resemble The Dude, Walter, Donny, and Jesus.
