Question 1 of 10
1. The ongoing feud between the two 'Generals' at San Theodoros has seen many a twist. Presumably Herge decided that to use this as the base for one of his last books. The good has to prevail over the evil in the end, so the wise men say. Well, if that is so, who is the good man in this saga? Hint

Question 2 of 10

Question 3 of 10

Well, some men will never understand these principle philosophies of life. Hint

Question 4 of 10

Question 5 of 10

They say Army men carry their vengeance forever. Maybe Herge considered him as a formidable foe since he was present in the last book. Who is this villain? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The ongoing feud between the two 'Generals' at San Theodoros has seen many a twist. Presumably Herge decided that to use this as the base for one of his last books. The good has to prevail over the evil in the end, so the wise men say. Well, if that is so, who is the good man in this saga?

Answer: General Alcazar

Of course, Alcazar is no way himself 'good'. He becomes the main man because of the support he gets from the leading protagonists of the book (Tintin, Haddock et al). His relationship goes back to the days of the 'Broken Ear' where a Tintin, completely intoxicated, decides to indulge in some post drinking babble. Of course, the revolutionaries staging a coup at that very moment were presumably more 'drunk' for they believed that Tintin was praising the rebel leader - Alcazar. We do meet Alcazar often in many Herge books.
2. A man with no vices - impossible, one may say. At least the word 'impossible' never exists for absent-minded professors. In this book also, Prof. Calculus ventures into one of his noble inventions -a cure to a vice. What noble venture was started by Calculus and which, soon, went on to help change history?

Answer: A cure for Drinking (Alcohol)

Of course, one finds that the perpetual drunkard Haddock suddenly finds an aversion to alcohol. Of course, the brain of Calculus was behind this. He helped get rid of the 'Drinking' problem at the Picaros centre, thus enabling a successful revolution.
3. Of course, people remember a revolution when there is bloodshed, mayhem and chaos in the days following the coup or the revolution. Well, some men will never understand these principle philosophies of life. One of the lead protagonists of this book offered assistance to General Alcazar, if and only if the latter promised a bloodless coup. Whose mind could have conceived such a 'preposterous' idea?

Answer: Tintin

Throughout the entire Tintin series, Tintin has been portrayed as a do-gooder, a man with no vices, save for a drink here and there. One of the preconditions for assistance to Alcazar was that the revolution shouldn't have any post-revolution vendetta. Of course, Alcazar was disappointed but he needed to cure his men of their drinking problem as soon as possible.
4. The joy of meeting a friend from the early days is overwhelming for any person, even for the ageless Tintin. Which of the following members did he meet after the longest time?

Answer: Ridgewell

Ridgewell was an explorer who went to the Arumbayas region (incidentally they also make a comeback in this book) and stayed there. He first met Tintin during the 'Broken Ear' mission. The other players were all met by Tintin as late as the time during the problem of 'The Castafiore Emerald'.
5. Some are fortunate (or should I say, unfortunate) to have enemies for life. With the exception of Rastapopulous, this man is arguably Tintin's greatest enemy. They say Army men carry their vengeance forever. Maybe Herge considered him as a formidable foe since he was present in the last book. Who is this villain?

Answer: Colonel Sponsz

Sponsz has made his presence felt in many books. The moon missions had him as the chief villain. He hails from Borduria.
6. A leader is only as successful as his followers. During the revolution of the Picaros, how many men was General Alcatraz able to command?

Answer: 30

Even Tintin is shocked by this miniscule amount, more so when he discovers their perpetually inebriated state. However the men were successful in their coup attempt thanks to a sensational plan by Tintin.
7. In a trial where the principles of natural justice were the last thing on everyone's minds, some of Tintin's friends were found guilty of treason and espionage. Who amongst the following was not sentenced to capital punishment?

Answer: Bianca Castafiore

Quite remarkably, Castafiore gets life imprisonment while the guardians of her precious jewels get capital punishment. In the climax, the race was on to prevent the fire squad from terminating the lives of the two most wonderful and comic detectives.
8. Being saved by the bell is quite common. However, after their escape from the pyramids and fast approaching an ambush, which animal saves Tintin and his entourage's lives?

Answer: Monkey

A monkey was seen on the road just ahead of the ambush. The monkey sees the ambush party, gets frightened and runs back from its normal course. This alerts Tintin. So one can say, "Saved by the monkey".
9. For once, Tintin isn't knocked unconscious by an enemy. However, which colleague of his didn't get to share that fortune and even had a memory lapse?

Answer: Captain Haddock

On their way to the Arumbaya village, Haddock gets smacked on the head (albeit accidentally) by a whisky bottle. In the ensuing dialogues, the reader gets to know Haddock's first name for the first time.
10. Who amongst the following was unhappy and revolted by the denial of fundamental rights to Bianca Castafiore and made his displeasure known (quite bluntly) to the enemy camp?

Answer: Calculus

Haddock seems delighted at first. Of course, that is primarily due to his severe hatred of the 'Jewel Song'. Tintin isn't particularly emotional. However, Calculus makes his displeasure known from the moment he finds out about the Castafiore episode.
