Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To begin with, how many continents are there in total (according to the Western school of thought)?

Answer: 7

The continents are: Australia, North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Antarctica. There is evidence to show that at one time in the earth's history, all the world's landmasses were joined together in a super continent called Pangaea. Scientists discovered this partly because they noticed that the various parts of the world can fit together, like a jigsaw puzzle. Take a look at a map and see for yourself!
2. Now, onto the countries! On which continent could you find France?

Answer: Europe

France can be found in northern Europe and is bordered by Spain, Andorra, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy and Germany. In the mid 1990s, a 'chunnel' - a tunnel under the water - was built to connect England and France across the English Channel. The capital of France is Paris, and this capital is home to many famous buildings and sites, including the Louvre (an art museum) and the Eiffel Tower.
3. Next, can you tell me which continent Canada is on?

Answer: North America

Canada is the second largest country in the world, and is located to the north of the United States. It is second only to Russia in size; however much of the land is only inhabited by small amounts of people. These areas have been termed Territories, and are mostly in the very northern parts of Canada.

The capital is Ottawa, and this country (my home country) is bilingual - it has two official languages, English and French. The majority of the inhabitants live near the American border, due to the warmer weather there.
4. Where in the world is China?

Answer: Asia

China is the fourth largest country in the world in size, and the largest in the world in population. It is one of the few communist countries left after the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, and has one of the richest histories in the world. It borders many different countries including India and Mongolia.
5. Which country is also sometimes referred to as a continent?

Answer: Australia

Australia is a great land mass in the south Pacific, and is home to many great natural wonders and interesting animals. Kangaroos, duck-billed platypus and crocodiles all call this country their home. There are also many great man-made sites, including the post-card perfect Sydney Opera House. It is surrounded by many chains of islands, and all together they are referred to as Oceania.
6. Which continent can Egypt be found on?

Answer: Africa

Egypt is home to one of the earliest civilizations, which has left its mark on the world many ways, including the beautiful site of the pyramids. These were the eternal resting places for pharaohs (ancient Egyptian kings), and are home to some of the greatest archaeological finds on the planet. Due to the very dry conditions of the desert in which they were built, much information has kept through the ages and has been able to give us information about the great people. Egypt is also home to the worlds longest river, the Nile. By flooding the surrounding planes every spring, the Nile provides irrigation (lots and lots of water) for crops, and food therefore for the people living on them.
7. Where could you find Brazil?

Answer: South America

Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world, and has the capital Brasilia - easy to remember! The official language spoken here is Portuguese, as Portugal was its colonizing nation. Being the largest country in South America, it borders almost every South American country and its largest city is Sao Paolo.

This country is home to a portion of the beautiful Amazon rain forest, as well as the second longest river in the world itself, the Amazon.
8. Which continent is home to Iceland?

Answer: Europe

Iceland is a small island located in the north Atlantic, in between Greenland and the rest of Europe. It was uninhabited by humans until the ninth century AD (800s), when it was settled by Scandinavian explorers. Although its name sounds very cold, it in fact has relatively mild weather in the southern inhabited parts, due to geothermal hot springs and the North Atlantic Current.

It is home to many natural wonders such as geysers and fjords, and enjoys one of the highest standards of living in the world.

The capital is Reykjavik which means 'smoky bay'.
9. On which continent could you find India?

Answer: Asia

India is the second most populous country in the world, next to China, and has its capital set at Delhi. It has one of the oldest civilizations in the world, the Indus Valley Civilization, and has been one of the greatest trade partners with Europe for many centuries.

In the eighteenth century Great Britain came into economic and political power here, and India was not made a free state until 1947. Now India has one of the fastest growing economies in the world and 23 official languages including Hindi and English.
10. Can you tell me on which of these continents you could find penguins in the wild?

Answer: Antarctica

This continent covers the south pole of the earth and is approximately 98% covered in ice! There are many different forms of life living at the bottom of the world, including penguins, fur seals and lichen, but no permanent human settlements. Many countries have claim on this land, and due to the very small amount of precipitation occurring inside the coastlines, it is technically a vast desert.

There are many scientific expeditions occurring in Antarctica, and therefore there is usually about 1000 people living there at any given time, though none make it their permanent home. I hope you enjoyed this quiz!
