quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From the category of "Animals": This reptile is often found in areas like creeks, open water, and deep channels. It does not hibernate, has a pointed snout and some members of its species have grown to over 19 feet.

Answer: Crocodile

Although both crocodiles (genus: crocodylus) and alligators (genus: alligator) are from the reptile family and are often confused for one another, there are differences. Alligators are more indigenous to America while crocodiles are found in several locations. In addition, alligators have more rounded snouts, grow to a length of about 14 feet (males) and do hibernate.
2. From the category of "Brain Teasers": This is a fractured cartoon character: While eek kahoat eek

Answer: Wile E Coyote

He's been chasing the roadrunner without success for as long as I can remember.
3. From the category of "Celebrities": He was the original host of "The Daily Show". Who is he?

Answer: Craig Kilborn

Craig Kilborn became "famous" as a humorous anchor on "Sportscenter" on ESPN. In 1996, he left to star on Comedy Centrals new show "The Daily Show" and did so for three years. Then in 1999, he got his own late night gig called "The Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn", replacing Tom Snyder. He was famous for his "Five Questions" which he would quiz his celebrity guests with.
4. From the category of "Entertainment": Who is the host for the show "Revealed" on "E!"?

Answer: Jules Asner

Jules Asner started reporting entertainment news back in 1994 on shows such as "Extra" and "HCTV". She was one of the original co-hosts of the show "E! News Live" in addition to being the original host of "Wild On". "Revealed" is a one on one interview with celebrities where Jules attempts to tackle the tough questions.
5. From the category "For Children": What was Little Miss Muffet eating when a spider sat down beside her?

Answer: Curds and whey

The definition of curds and whey essentially breaks down to yogurt. Individually, curds are milk sours or secondary cheese and have been compared to cottage cheese. Whey is a form of protein. It seems as if "Little Miss Muffet" was eating a healthy snack when she was scared away by a spider.
6. From the category of "Geography": Which of the following countries share a border with Albania?

Answer: North Macedonia

Other countries that border Albania are Greece and the former Yugoslavia. It also borders the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea. It can be found in Eastern Europe.
7. From the category of "History"... In what year did Orson Welles broadcast "The War of the Worlds" over the radio?

Answer: 1938

On October 30th, 1938, Orson Welles interrupted the broadcasting of the music of Ramon Raquello to inform the world that Martians were attacking us. It was a purely fictitious hoax that was based on H.G. Wells's book, "War of the Worlds". It caused widespread panic and showed the enormous reach of the radio as it reached over six million people (this number may be exaggerated).

It goes to show us what kind of an effect the media has on listeners or viewers in today's society.
8. From the category of "Hobbies and Games": If in a game of chess, both players only have their kings remaining on the board, there is no way to achieve a "Checkmate".

Answer: True

Since kings can only move one space on any side of the space they occupy and cannot make a maneuver that will lead to a checkmate, this situation would be an immediate stalemate.
9. From the category of "Humanities": Aristotle had a school of thought that knowledge enters the mind through the senses so everything that is contained in the mind has been impressed upon us by society. The mind is a blank slate upon birth so anything that is stored there is not actually knowledge but an illusion or error of the senses. This denies the metaphysical reality of concepts. Which brand of philosophy best describes what I am talking about?

Answer: Stoicism

Emotions and the mind are made of ethereal energy and in effect do not exist on the physical plane as they are not tangible. You cannot ask someone to show you a bowl full of jealousy. This way of thinking went against Plato's idea that the mind and senses were the sources of knowledge. Aristotle studied under Plato but did challenge many of his ideas.
10. From the category of "Literature": C.S. Lewis wrote seven books that pertained to the legend of Aslan and Narnia. The first book is "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe". What is the name of the penultimate book in the series (chronologically)?

Answer: The Silver Chair

This is a fascinating series of books that I read as a child but are for people of any age. The correct published order of books 1-7 are as follows: 1)"The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe", 2)"Prince Caspian", 3)"The Voyage of the Dawn Treader", 4)"The Silver Chair", 5)"The Horse and His Boy", 6)"The Magician's Nephew", and 7)"The Last Battle".

The chronological order is: 1)"The Magician's Nephew", 2)"The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe", 3)"The Horse and His Boy", 4) "Prince Caspian", 5)"The Voyage of the Dawn Treader", 6)"The Silver Chair" and 7)"The Last Battle".
11. From the category of "Movies": Which of the following movies was NOT a sequel?

Answer: Leonard Part VI

"Leonard Part VI" was a comedy starring Bill Cosby that flopped "big time" at the box office. It hit theatres in 1987 but did not stay in them for long. Even Bill Cosby told people to stay away from it.
12. From the category of "Music": John Rzeznik, Robbie Takac, and Mike Malinin make up which band?

Answer: The Goo Goo Dolls

The Goo Goo Dolls have been around since 1985 and their latest album release, "Gutterflower", has been a big success. In 1999, they released "Iris" from the "Dizzy Up the Girl" soundtrack and it hit number 1 for three weeks. This was also featured in the movie and on the soundtrack of "City of Angels".

They were nominated for 3 Grammy awards in this year: Best pop performance by a duo or group, song of the year, and record of the year.
13. From the category of "People": In the year 1989, Time Magazine came out with a "Man of the Decade". Who was this man?

Answer: Mikhail Gorbachev

Mikhail Gorbachev was first Time's "Man of the year" in 1988 and then followed up with the "Man of the Decade" title. He was talked about as the leader of a new generation of Soviets and credited with a genuine concern for mankind and nuclear disarmament.

There was a lot of controversy surrounding this decision as many people felt that he was not as genuine as he appeared to be about disarming his own country's missiles as well as not addressing Russia's shortcomings in the war with Afghanistan, the murder of innocent passengers aboard Korean Air Lines Flight 007, and not actively participating in attempts to feed Ethiopians or thwarting the Iraqi-Iranian war.
14. From the category of "Religion": Which religion follows the Koran as its Holy Book?

Answer: Islam

The Islamic Religion centers around Allah and the Koran. Like many other religions, it preached that the Islamic way was the only way and there was a lot of conflict between their people and Jews and Christians. The book is open for much interpretation like the Old and New Testaments and many of its teachings have been distorted and interpreted over the years to service the religious figures that held high authority.
15. From the category of "Science and Technology": An object in space made up of a nucleus, coma, dust tail, and ion tail is called a what?

Answer: Comet

Comets are objects in space that are composed of several different parts. The "nucleus" is in effect a solid snowball made of dust and ice. When a comet nears the sun or any star, the nucleus heats up, causing volatile gas to sublimate and creates a dense atmosphere around the nucleus called the coma.

The now released gases trail the coma and nucleus and form a "tail". The dust tail is the most prominent part of a comet and can be up to 10 kilometers long. The ion tail is composed of plasma, laced with rays and steamers caused by contact with solar wind.

It can be several hundred meters long. They are beautiful objects to look at in the night sky. The most famous comet known on Earth is Halley's Comet which has an orbit around Earth of 76 years.

The last time this was visible was 1986 and is predicted to again show up in our skies in 2061.
16. From the category of "Seasonal": What day in the U.S. does the Vernal Equinox fall?

Answer: March 21st

The Vernal Equinox symbolizes the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Vernal means spring and Equinox means equal night. On this day, there are 12 hours of sunlight and twelve hours of night. The sun is directly over the Equator at this time, just as it is on the Fall Equinox.
17. From the category of "Sports": Which NHL team did Wayne Gretsky once refer to as a "Mickey Mouse" organization?

Answer: New Jersey Devils

He made this statement in 1983 and the Devils at that time had almost no success. His comments came back to haunt him as Mickey Mouse dolls were thrown onto the ice during the Edmonton Oilers trip to New Jersey. The Devils have certainly thwarted that image as they have won two Stanley Cups in three appearances during a run of 15 seasons in which they made the playoffs thirteen times.
18. From the category of "Television": "Married With Children" started on FOX's opening night of programming.

Answer: False

"Married with Children" starring Christina Applegate, Ed O'Neal, David Faustino, and Katey Segal was one of two half hour comedies that premiered on Fox on April 6th, 1987. The other show was the "Tracy Ullman Show" which inevitably gave birth to "The Simpsons".

This was Fox's first night of prime-time programming, but Fox actually kicked off on October 9, 1986 with "The Late Show With Joan Rivers".
19. From the category of "World": What island is also known as "Rapa Nui"?

Answer: Easter Island

Easter Island is one of the most isolated places on Earth as it is over 2,000 miles from the nearest populated areas of Tahiti and Chile. The people that live on the island today are called the Rapanui. This island is most famous for the Easter Island Statues whose origin is a matter of much debate.

It is suggested that there might even be an extra-terrestrial influence or the remains of a lost continent such as Atlantis that gave birth to these statues.
20. Finally, as I have run out of categories, what category would I find "Astrology" under?

Answer: Hobbies and Games

Astrology is one of my favorite subjects and is hard to categorize I suppose. I am a little confused to see it associated with "Hobbies and Games" as I think it is more than a game. It has been around for as long as the human race.
