Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of Henry VIII's famous warship, possibly reflecting his favor towards one of his sisters?

Answer: Mary Rose

England at the time of Henry VIII had no official navy, and with threats emerging from continental Europe, building warships was a prudent choice. Henry had multiple warships constructed including the "Mary Rose", which was likely named for his younger sister Mary Tudor, Queen of France and later Duchess of Suffolk.

The "Mary Rose" sank in 1545 but was salvaged in 1982 and is currently a museum ship.
2. Which singer performed "The Rose" and starred in the 1979 film of the same name?

Answer: Bette Midler

The song "The Rose" was written by Amanda McBroom, who won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song. Bette Midler's version of the song went to #3 on the Billboard charts. The movie was originally based on Janis Joplin's life, but was fictionalized once her family refused to sell the production rights. Bette Midler was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her role in the film (which was also her first movie role!).
3. What characteristic distinguishes a rosé wine?

Answer: It has some of the color from grape skins, but not enough to be a red wine

A rosé wine is a wine that incorporates some of the grape skin color. It is likely the oldest type of wine, as it is the easiest to produce well before the advent of technology. Rosé wines come from various regions and can range from very dry to sweet.
4. The Pakistan Air Force started Project ROSE in the early 1990s to modernize certain aircraft. What does ROSE stand for?

Answer: Retrofit of Strike Element

Project ROSE, or Project Retrofit of Strike Element, was begun by the Pakistan Air Force in 1992. Fighter aircraft, including the Dassault Mirage II and Mirage 5, were outfitted with new avionics with the work being performed in both Pakistan and France. The ROSE upgraded aircraft are expected to be replaced in 2015 by newer, high performance JF-17 fighters.
5. What is the primary alcohol in the International Bartenders Association's Rose cocktail?

Answer: Vermouth

According to the IBA, a Rose cocktail is made with vermouth and cherry eau de vie (a type of light fruit brandy), which gives the drink a rose color.
6. Who or what is a Tokyo Rose?

Answer: A female English language broadcaster of Japanese propaganda during WWII

Tokyo Rose was the nickname given to female English language broadcasters of Japanese propaganda during World War II. There were approximately 12 Tokyo Roses during the war, but the most prominent was Iva Toguri D'Aquino, a Japanese-American who broadcast under the name "Orphan Ann".

She was arrested but released soon after the Japanese surrender, and temporarily left the US. When she tried to return, the FBI arrested her and she was convicted on one count of treason, but eventually pardoned by President Ford when it was shown that key witnesses lied in their testimony.
7. The Rose was the name of the first theater built specifically to host a production of one of Shakespeare's plays. In which area of London was it built?

Answer: Southwark

The Rose Theater was built in Southwark in 1587 by Philip Henslowe. Although it was destroyed in approximately 1606, it is reportedly one of the first theaters to be able to allow for large groups of performers on two distinct levels. The site of the Rose Theater was opened to the public in 1999 and in 2007 a portion was being used as a performance space.
8. The War of the Roses was a brutal dynastic war in England throughout the mid to late 1400's. Why was the conflict given this name?

Answer: The two warring houses both used roses as their heraldic symbols

The Lancaster branch (the red roses) of the Plantagenet family fought their York cousins (the white roses) for the English Crown. Henry VII was the final victor and was from a minor Lancaster branch, although his surname was Tudor. After he married Elizabeth, the daughter of a previous Yorkist King, he combined the roses of the warring houses into the Tudor rose, a double rose of white over red.
9. Which actress played Rose Nylund on "The Golden Girls"?

Answer: Betty White

Betty White played the widow Rose Nylund from 1985 - 1992 on "The Golden Girls". She was originally slated to play Blanche, but the producers decided to have her play Rose instead as that character was more similar to Betty's previous character Sue Ann on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show".
10. St. Rose, the first person born in the Americas to be canonized by the Catholic Church, was from what city?

Answer: Lima

St. Rose of Lima (1586-1617) was initially forbidden to become a nun by her father, who wanted her to marry. She instead joined a lay order and her acts of charity and penitence earned her much regard. For the final 11 years of her life she wore a heavy crown with spikes on the inside, designed to represent the Crown of Thorns worn by Jesus.

She prophesied the date of her death and was canonized by Pope Clement X in 1671. She is the patron saint of indigenous peoples of the Americas, florists, the City of Lima and of Peru, among others.
