Twins are rare - being born only in 1.35% of African elephant pregnancies.
3. How many species of Elephant Seals are there?

Answer: Two

The two species are the Northern Elephant Seal, which is found in waters from Alaska to California and the Southern Elephant Seal which mainly breeds on sub-Antarctic islands and also on the southern coast of Argentina. Of the two species, the Southern Elephant Seal is the largest.
4. The Elephant Bird, the largest bird known to science, became extinct several hundred years ago. On which island did it use to live?

Answer: Madagascar

This 10 foot tall, half-ton bird laid the largest eggs known to have existed.
5. In what year was the elephant first used as a symbol for the US Republican party?

Answer: 1874

It was adopted after a cartoon in the 'Harper's Weekly' depicted a Democratic jackass trying to frighten a Republican elephant.

For many years Elephant Butte Lake was the largest man-made lake in the world. It is named because there is an island in the middle of the lake that is elephant-shaped.

Doctors first thought that Merrick suffered from a tropical disease called elephantiasis, later it was suggested that he might have had neurofibromatosis. Now it is believed that he suffered from Proteus Syndrome. This disease is very rare.

Answer: Ganesha

Ganesha is the son of Shiva. He symbolises strength and intelligence. He is also the Hindu God of writers.
10. In 1931, Frenchman Jean de Brunhoff wrote and illustrated his first book about Babar the Elephant. How many Babar books was Jean the author of?

Answer: Six

Jean de Brunhoff died of tuberculosis in 1937. His son, Laurent de Brunoff, has continued the series.
